I have a BlackBerry Storm 2 (Verizon) and i can talk and surf at the same time, if i ever really wanted to, but never needed to. Just use WiFi because it is everywhere.

If you aren't doing it now, you clearly don't need to, and thus will be satisfied with a phone not capable of doing both. Some of us are able to multi task and do things like use a computer and talk on the phone at the same time.
One of the MAIN reasons the iPhone is so much more reputable, is the fact that is was the FIRST smart phone of its time. Since other companies did no have phones out of similar calibur at that time, there was no competition, so AT&T was THE company to go to for the iPhone. Now because other companies are developing "Android" phones, they have to do shity advertising to keep people @ AT&T. Who cares if you can or cannot surf and talk at the same time, that is not what a phone is for.
Just an FYI I have a droid with Verizon and you CAN talk and surf the internet at the same time. The commercial is TECHNICALLY right because on 3G you can't talk and surf the web but as long as you are connected to wifi(which is free) you can easily and quickly talk and surf the net at the same time!

AT&T sucks! LOTS of drop calls, and the poor customer service. When someone spammed me with text message ads, I called them for assistance, only to have them argue with me for 1/2 hour and they did nothing. AT&T HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE OUT OF ALL THE CARRIERS!!

Once Sprint was the premier carrier in the U.S., I had my Treo 650 hooked-up to their service, until it became nightmarish to remain a Sprint loyalist. Being with Verizon hasn't been all that bad and yet after nearly a decade as a wireless customer I have become jaded and to me the phone's merely another appliance.

Actually I do it all the time with my iphone. It really is amazing and comes in handy. Especially when you are on the phone with airlines, banks, etc. When u need to refence an email for a flight number or account number or confirmation number, etc
I don't know, I one of those who flies about 5 times a year. The few times I had a problem with a flight, I just called the airline on my cell, gave them my name and they knew who I was and which flight I am supposed to take.. never needed any other references.
I wouldn't switch provider just to do something I may do once or twice a year.

LMAO, both sprint and verizon have 5 times more 3g coverage than att, and faster 3g speeds since cdma doesn't bog down like gsm. And on the droid switch to from sms, phonecalls, music, video, back to webbroswer without having to close any application.
Even if you are able to talk and surf on the Droid, who is so darned impolite as to surf the web, or do anything else for that matter, while talking to someone? Most people with smart phones have either a desktop or a laptop anyway, so use them if you have to.

Result: I was talking to my friend on the phone he said ''oh check out that link I email to ya'' so I linked my phone to my netbook via bluetooth. and watched the Youtube video. WHILE TALKING ON THE PHONE
If you're away from your PC and someone wants to send you an email or tell you about a website you can:
a) go home real quick
b) Tell them "Thanks, I've got Verizon and will call you back"
c) Go to the site or open the email (if you have AT&T)
While SOME people can only do one thing at a time MOST people want a phone that can do EVERYTHING. If you're going to defend service do it based on what it CAN do (like better 3G coverage), not on what it CAN'T do, which AT&T's lawsuit loss showed.

My dear Daughter gifted me with a 60 Gig iPod (great device for what it does) for my birthday 3 and 1/2 years ago yet I never wanted an iPhone, Not ever. Daughter has one and she adores it. Not for Dad though.
I'm a former Sprint customer from their heyday when they were 'King'. Had my Palm Treo with them and it was a winner while I had Sprint.
Sad. Really sad. Verizon might be more expensive but you do get way more coverage and better signal. But nothing can compare to the iPhone Safari, way better web experience, but poor call coverage

Actually the iPhone can multitask. While you're on the phone you can launch any application you want. I do this frequently because I need to look at my email while talking on the phone.
Why would you want to surf the net while talking on the phone? That's just plain rude to the other person (not that he knows your doing it). AT&Ts commercial are all about the iPhone. Not everyone likes the iPhone. Pretty much this is what AT&T is saying "AT&T without the iPhone we are nothing"
Your friend might want you to look at something while you're on the phone. It has nothing to do with being rude. My friends ask me questions that involve me having to use the internet while I'm on the phone all the time.
At&t must have been and still something because they have majority of the United States on their network before they had the iPhone, and you see they still do.
Ok, so.... Sure I can do that on my iPhone, but the damn thing will drop the call 6 times and download the web page at a snails pace. I have my iPhone 3GS and I love it, I hate AT&T with a passion. I only get 2 bars of EDGE at my house, but the Verizon Droid I just bought gets full bars of 3G.
I sure wish at&t would spend some money adding more 3G coverage then tooting their horn in these ads. I'm not even going to go over the fact that my visual voicemail hasn't worked in a month...
actually att's edge has more coverage than verizon and there entire network is rev a 3g, so att's edge is faster. its there 3g that doesn't have as much coverage which doesn't matter really, since there regular coverage is faster than verizon's.
I have used both networks extensively, I have an iPhone 3GS and a Motorola Droid. I have found both AT&T 3G and EDGE to be inconsistent with both speed and latency, depending on the number of users, signal, etc. I have AT&T EDGE at my house while VZW has full 3G. AT&Ts network is a steaming pile of fail.
You don't even need Wifi. It works perfectly fine with EVDO on the Blackberry Curve. No wifi hotspot required. In fact, WiFi is totally disabled on the Verizon Curves.
I actually do this. I love hooking up the bluetooth so I can read texts send and receive files. Or open up a link someone sends me. Got to love the Blackberry Bold.

You would want to do it if you are talking on the phone and need to look something up on the internet, say a movie time, without hanging up the phone. Or maybe you want to discuss an email that you received and need to sent it to another person.
And any 3G phone on AT&Ts 3G network can do it. It is not available on the EDGE network though, only the 3G and WiFi.
Any GSM 3G phone with a web browser can do that. iPhone, Blackberry Bold, many many others..
I do it a lot actually.. example: Someone calls me while I am out and on my headphones, they ask me how to get to where I am. On a Verizon phone, I wouldn't be able to look up the directions in the Maps application (unless it's offline, which takes up a lot of space). On my iPhone, I simply press the home button and the call is still going, and then I go into maps and search it. :) No 2 phone calls.

In Australia its one of the few areas we have up on you guys...a decent 3G mobile network.

just to put this in perspective;
there are 19,355 cities in the US, and AT&T only covers 9,400 of them; that is less than half.
AT&T covers 97% of the PEOPLE in the USA, not the LANDSPACE; big difference..
in the major cities; there is little difference in network capabilities, but outside major cities; AT&T is awful. the coverage is spotty.
AT&T is faster than Verizon, but if you can't get service, that speed is meaningless..
*lesson; go with Verizon, these commercials are stupid.

Just remember that AT&T absorbed the once-popular Cingular to become the muddled mess which it is today.
Once Sprint was the premier carrier in the U.S., I had my Treo 650 hooked-up to their service, until it became nightmarish to remain a Sprint loyalist. Being with Verizon hasn't been all that bad and yet after nearly a decade as a wireless customer I have become jaded and to me the phone's merely another appliance.

Actually I do it all the time with my iphone. It really is amazing and comes in handy. Especially when you are on the phone with airlines, banks, etc. When u need to refence an email for a flight number or account number or confirmation number, etc

I don't know, I one of those who flies about 5 times a year. The few times I had a problem with a flight, I just called the airline on my cell, gave them my name and they knew who I was and which flight I am supposed to take.. never needed any other references.
I wouldn't switch provider just to do something I may do once or twice a year.
Besides, this ad is false advertisement, since the Droid from Verizon can do that.

If you're away from your PC and someone wants to send you an email or tell you about a website you can:
a) go home real quick
b) Tell them "Thanks, I've got Verizon and will call you back"
c) Go to the site or open the email (if you have AT&T)
While SOME people can only do one thing at a time MOST people want a phone that can do EVERYTHING. If you're going to defend service do it based on what it CAN do (like better 3G coverage), not on what it CAN'T do, which AT&T's lawsuit loss showed.

My dear Daughter gifted me with a 60 Gig iPod (great device for what it does) for my birthday 3 and 1/2 years ago yet I never wanted an iPhone, Not ever. Daughter has one and she adores it. Not for Dad though.
I'm a former Sprint customer from their heyday when they were 'King'. Had my Palm Treo with them and it was a winner while I had Sprint.

This ONLY works when you have a "3G" connection on AT&T. So, the Verizon ad showing the AT&T 3G map that AT&T loves to complain about is that much more correct than ever!!!
You don't need a data connection to refer to emails downloaded in your mail app anyway.
Maybe 1% of users look up up things on the web or randomly surf web sites from the phone at the same time they are in a phone conversation on that phone and it would be so awkward to try do both even with a headset or speakerpone.

actually att's edge has more coverage than verizon and there entire network is rev a 3g, so att's edge is faster. its there 3g that doesn't have as much coverage which doesn't matter really, since there regular coverage is faster than verizon's.

AT&T HSDPA - Avg 1mbit down, max 3.6mbit.
I have used both networks extensively, I have an iPhone 3GS and a Motorola Droid. I have found both AT&T 3G and EDGE to be inconsistent with both speed and latency, depending on the number of users, signal, etc. I have AT&T EDGE at my house while VZW has full 3G. AT&Ts network is a steaming pile of fail.

You would want to do it if you are talking on the phone and need to look something up on the internet, say a movie time, without hanging up the phone. Or maybe you want to discuss an email that you received and need to sent it to another person.
And any 3G phone on AT&Ts 3G network can do it. It is not available on the EDGE network though, only the 3G and WiFi.

Any GSM 3G phone with a web browser can do that. iPhone, Blackberry Bold, many many others..
I do it a lot actually.. example: Someone calls me while I am out and on my headphones, they ask me how to get to where I am. On a Verizon phone, I wouldn't be able to look up the directions in the Maps application (unless it's offline, which takes up a lot of space). On my iPhone, I simply press the home button and the call is still going, and then I go into maps and search it. :) No 2 phone calls.

lol at the dude who wonders why you don't want both at same time... EV-DO is lame in comparison... just need more EDGE capabilities over there guys (from Australia).
In Australia its one of the few areas we have up on you guys...a decent 3G mobile network.
