There were slaves in the Cotton fields full of slaves. There were mills full of Slaves. It's not Black vs. White or visa vi, it's the rich vs. the poor. Racism is the divide so no-one sees the bigger picture. Agreed
@psweep That is a good point, however it has nothing to do with the song. The song is not about the bigger picture. It's about the monotony of having to pick cotton day after day.
I can't believe anyone would wanna sing about picking some darn cotton. Even more crazy racist whites singing about pickin cotton! ( Not to say these singers are racist) Just thinking about back then, racist jammin to this.
@Mr1887HSV1887 Meine Übersetzungen möglicherweise nicht richtig sein. Wollen Sie damit sagen, dass die Schulen in Europa lehren alte African-American Slave Songs?
@mooncrow1988 Ja, das tun sie. Teachers like those songs, because they are easy to learn, and they can secretly teach a little bit of english and a little bit of history by the way. And anyway the germans like Songs in English (or french or...) I think because in foreign languages you only have to listen to the words if you choose. If you listen to songs in your own language you often can't help to realize how simple the lyrics are.
@uselessyardape That's not an ignorant statement at all, is it? Did you use that stunning intellect, racial empathy and pride when you picked that email address as well?
@Americanbanjoman76 And maybe because all the cotton in the south was shipped to the mills of North West England for the textile industry :D for us English slaves in those darkened mills :P
@psweep Well, are you referring to the industrial age of England? If so then they chose that. They chose to become indentured servants. The Africans who sang these songs were forced to be slaves. And lets not forget it was the English(and the Dutch) who enslaved the Africans to America in the first place. Not to mention the Irish. Think the "The Great Crusades".

I'm getting lazy. I've used the same visuals as I did on the Donegan version of this.
