i have always been mezmorised by the lryics to this song ...its kind of like a statement from a vegetarian down at the market being grossed out by chicken parts ---something like that anyway... great song by a great artist.
A most lovely voice; It brings a beautiful memory of a special BEing that would only eat eggs from a "Free-non caged chix" it almost made you want to weep for the caring right there in the groc.store. Thanks Suzanne for the Memory reminder. She could make any song sound marvelous. :-))) So Enjoyable.<3 to ALLLLL
Thanks for clip, except the lyric book to "Solitude Standing" next to me says "Through the rust and heat" and not "rest and heat"...perhaps when you have a moment you can read through it and change..
Thank you thank you.... I listened to Suzanne's album all day as I did my homework in my room... Loved her then and I still do. God... what is it? 30 years already? Yes...
This might sound odd, but it was actually Weird Al Yankovic that made me a fan of Suzanne. He includes a bit from "Tom's Diner" on one of his polkas, and one day I went searching for the original, and came across her _Solitude_Standing_ album.
Absolute gold.
There are very few artists whose entire albums I listen to, and Suzanne is among those. I love putting Solitude into the bedside player and just letting her carry me off to sleep.
She was the one wh really got me into music. i remember I heard Tom's Diner on the radio ne day and went out that week and bought 'Solitude Standing' I came home, and listened to every song on it, and then I went out and bought 'Retrospective: The Best of Suzanne Vega' Best summer of my life.
Suzanne Vega is my favourite singer-songwriter and I love all of her songs. This is still my favourite. The words and music seem to go together effortlessly. "Wings are nearly FREE" is spine-tingling.
The music is spellbinding, and the lyrics demand that you engage your intelligence. "Left of Center" caught my attention, but "Ironbound/Fancy Poultry" made me a true Suzanne Vega fan.
I just realized this is probably one of her best songs, lyrically. Is she talking about the Ironbound section in Newark, NJ off Penn Station? I hope so, cause that's my fave neighborhood, with all the Portuguese bakeries and Brazilian restaurants.
...breasts are cheap...and wings are nearly FREEEEE...C'est formibable...n'est'ce pas? In all the languages of the world, only the poor shall know her name...Pablo Neruda

other correction
Refrain 1
Bound up in iron and wire and fate, watching her walk him up to the gate,
In front of the iron bound school yard
thanks for the post

Verse 2
Beams and bridges cut the light on the ground,
Into little triangles and the rails run down,
Through the rust and heat, the light and sweet coffee colour of her skin

Still my favorite of her songs. The touching and tender amid the hard and harsh, the transcendent found in the mundane.

If you like singer/songwriters, a "must own".

Agree with zyhz= wow -When I think of Suzanne Vega, I think of Luka and Ironbound...

@reliablebow Luka, Solitude Standing, Ironbound, In the Eye, Calypso, Gypsy... the greatest half of an album of that time.
