I had the privilege of knowing my father for sixteen and a half years. He's with God now, but someday, when I am very old, I will be able to look into his eyes once more.
I guess everyone has their own opinions about what this song means but to me its not talking about his actual father, I think its him talking about God and needing His help with raising his son. But I might be wrong
My father passed away in March of 2004. We buried him on my birthday. It was weird and unsettling to sign papers to bury someone with your same name. The pain has significantly subsided, but I can never again have a birthday without remembering James, Sr.
I cry when I listen to this song,Idk..my relationship with my father was alwasy rough..it seems so hard to please him,all I did was made him angry..Im so sorry father..I wish I was a better son..but Im and idiot..
@thetearjerker19 your not the only one struggling to have a relationship w/ their father. i have had so much trouble w/ it that i gave up on gaining my fathers approval years ago.
@misspatches2012 im 26 btw,so it makes a huge difference, but I feel a lot better now,I hope Im gonna make him proud someday..I really do,atleast before he dies.
I recently lost my Dad last year. It has been harder than hell trying to pull my family back together again. I know that he loved me no matter what. I am everything because he loved me unconditionally. This song says it all, Another Great Tune Eric!!
God Bless you and your family!! The best way to keep the memory alive to keeping loving them as if they where still here. I lost my Grandfather 12 years ago....and it was heartbreaking but we have to remember that our loves that we lost are angels on loan to us from heaven.
I lost my dad in 2006 his body may be gone but I know he is still with me in sull and spireit jst like every one eals who has lost A love one there bodys may be gone but there all ways here ever had to cry on A clear sunny day and its starts spiting A littel rain thats them crying with you and if the bards start singing thats them too telling use thing will be ok rip to all the ones who lst A love one rip
Someday, when our time comes to leave the earth, we'll be ready to face death and God will bring us to Heaven too so that we will be reunited again as one family.
God gave us the best miracle we could ever imagine, God took my father to be with Him in heaven so he won't get sick no more but to have eternal life in Heaven. Praise God Forever. Papa celebrated His Christmas and New Year in Heaven together with our Heavenly Father. He will always be remembered for he is present in our hearts, Papa please count on our prayers always. Papa we love you forever and beyond.
@bigboned316 Hmm, that's funny because my father has talked to Eric twice, and he asked him the meaning of a few of his songs. And I just checked the wiki page for this song, too. It said that as well. I'd probably go with what Eric said to my father, but feel free to have your own beliefs.

"This is England, this is a white country, we don’t want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man. We are a white country." - Eric Clapton
On 9/11, I played "My Father's Eyes" to honor the dead in New York, the Pentigon, and Stonycreek, Pennsylvania. I couldn't stop crying when it happened.

LISTEN CLOSELY PEOPLE -- THIS IS WHAT AWFUL SOUNDS LIKE! THIS IS THE SOUND OF SELLOUT! IT IS THE SOUND OF NO SOUL!! IT IS THE SOUND OF VOMIT! THE SOUND OF FECES DROPPING THE SOUND OF HELL THE SOUND OF JUSTIN BEIBER'S WET DREAM THE SOUND OF A GUY WHO'S WRITTEN NOTHING GOOD SINCE LAYLA (1972) This is what you get when you suck the life out of music... when you rape honesty and integrity and merge it with money and ego. ONE OF THE WORST SONGS OF ALL TIME!!
I love this song it reminds me of riding an elephant. They have the bells on their legs and they have a rythem of how they walk through the jungles. It is nice to be on an elephant sort in the front of the line. Miss riding my elephants. They are very wise animals. A real love never fails through time.
I've always loved this song (a little bit too much).Up to this day it still brings tears to my eyes. I had always said (when I was young) that I wanted to dance to this song with my father on my wedding night, although at the time I never knew my father...I just wish my deadbeat dad was someone I'd like to call father...I had always wanted to be able to really relate to this song whenever I heard it.
@eyecandyt I love hearing that from a father's point of view - as a man, there's no man - rich, political power or pro athlete that I would rather be around more than my father - that inspired me to want to be that way for my children, now 37,33 and 26 - I'd dance at your wedding...
Superb comments,i,m sure Eric C would be happy should he see them. However, to add to the debate on the meaning of the lyrics .i believe you will find he,s singing about his Higher Power(God,to me and you) most of his lyrics are if you listen to them again...

I still look into my father's eyes logically even after 5 years after his death.

@gvidorama You are completely right! I lost my father almost 4 years ago and I wish I had told him: I love you! He was the best father someone could have. Love your parents no matter what!!!
@gvidorama My dad was 50 and died about 2 months ago. I agree with what you say. We have to love our family and show them how much you care. I'd give anything to have him back. I hope you are getting through your situation okay.
@gvidorama Dont feel too bad the last thing i ever said to my dad was "shut up" cuz he was bugging me while i was sleeping. If i could take it back i would.
@gvidorama sad thing is you dont know wot u miss till its gone,i lost my dad but he lived a long way away at the time ,10 years later it hit me and i miss him so much, can.t bring him back ! i feel guilty ,i think of him alot !!!! wot can i do ??
@gvidorama Wish could look to my Father eyes ! He died at last winter day this year
in 75 , still hurting as it was yesterday ! My old Man was my best friend suport ,last joy
in may life , that's hurt evan more ! Maybee hard to figured out to others , we were so conected throow minds etc - we were born at the same date (19. Feb.) The most sad thing, Dad gone unhappy, sad , cos he new , he can't left me to nobody ! I anderstand how Y feel, and Y hawe e point !
my father and i were close when i was younger he raised me never knew my mom as i got older like all kids i rebeled got into lots of trouble with the police dad stoped talking to me guess he disowned me i made alot of changes in my life dad be proud but we didnt talk for 15 yrs then he died never seeing the changes i made in my life or got to see his grand kids something i must live with now my son is going to be a dad im so happy im going to be a papa when i need answers i think of dad
I never knew my dad. As a father of 8 all I hope is I have done well. That they can be better than me. All my girls and boys should hear this song, and someday when I pass and hope that they understand.
ive never known what it is to have a dad,but i try to be a good man, and do the right thing in hopes that in some small way i do look at the world thruw his eyes.this song really touch me in a possitive way. to boston, and freebird my heart goes out to you bot, and anyone whos lost a father.
I was 16 in 98 my fathers for a wierd reason quit my moms was an hard period in my life im 30 now and lots of things have passed but i still dont know what happend in his head
this song reminds me of my father since i was a sick child growing up was very hard he always been there for us we love music we always shared that gift and bond together the love between us has grown from little girl to grown women love you dady
Last year, I met a brother I never knew I had. He was raised in an orphanage. He never knew who his father was. He desperately searched the world for family and found us. We sang "Happy Birthday" to him as a family for the first time, and he burst into tears - I'll never forget that.
Thank you for the congratulations - my new brother is a special person, and I like him. He deserves to have a family and I'm happy to welcome him. I'm expecting a letter from him soon. He speaks German - so I have to get out the dictionary and work on communication. Thanks for the note!!!
@freebirdmusic34 I'm sorry for your loss . . . I hope you have lots of good memories to treasure for the rest of your life. I recently managed to track down my father after he left before I was born (I'm 29 years old now). I was told that he didn't want to know me as he has his own family and life and that he's very happy without me . . . that is my only memory of my father . . . .
Keep hold of your memories and never forget what a great dad you've had . . . . .
I hate to hear sad experiences of people who never knew their fathers. I knew mine. I loved him. He's not forgotten. Anything, and every step I take, I can look into the mirror. I see my fathers eyes, and his love for me.
My father had been terribly sick with leukemia and passed away sleeping on my lap last year... I miss him so much... I have completely been deserted since. Other than him I had no one in this world. I have never been close to my Mom or anyone else in my family and that makes things all the more difficult!!!
I was on the bus comin back from my mates gig the other day. had been on the cola and was comin down. feeling a bit messed up. I really needed to talk to my dad. My father passed away six years ago. I cry to this song every single time.
I'm not saying that I would have had it any other way but my father and I were very close. He passed away two days after my 34th B'day. I am now 12 years just beginning recover from the depression. The fact that I look exactly like him doesn't help as I am constantly reminded of this. Sometimes I think the more you know them the more it hurts when they are gone. I also glad I didn't have to find out how much it hurts to not ever to have known him.

I never knew my dad. As a father of 8 all I hope is I have done well. That they can be better than me. All my girls and boys should hear this song, and someday when I pass and hope that they understand.
