This young lady is a beginner, not an expert. She desperately needs a teacher herself. If you want to play the violin, you also need a teacher. If you are looking for tips off the internet, there are better examples. There are many Youtube videos of the great violinists and also of some extremely talented young people. Listen, watch and learn. But not from this series.

@imb4u8 Sorry but these videos are shite. She has a gap between her middle two fingers and her first and second fingers on the bow that are big enough to fly a plane through. That is also not staccato, it is too far down the bow to even be called spicatto. And her bow changes on the long bows sound like breaking glass. People are right to warn against these videos and yes I could do better myself but have no need to as there are many excellent videos that are far better than I could do on youtub

I can discredit everything this woman says. Ready? 0:10 - That's a spicatto, and a very poor one at that. Sticatto is in the upper half and never leaves the string. 0:22 - Your bow hold is literally awful, and your G string is a half a step flat. 0:34 - Have you ever heard Shostakovitch? Quadruple forte tremolo, aka LOUD AS HELL. 0:48 - Volume is dependent upon arm and finger weight; distance from the bridge assists, but usually no more. While I understand & respect the critical comments, I just came to this video because Im looking for tips, not lessons. I'm a guitarist, and have been playing, self-taught, for nearly 30 yrs. Though I understand I'd never be mistaken for a classically trained musician, I have a unique style. My pet peeve has always been people who say there's a "wrong" way to play an instrument, or a "wrong" way to play music. My favorite musicians are people who ignored standard "must-do" musical techniques.
@klmullins65 I agree that it's valid to find your own musical style but the violin is much more technically particular than you realize. There really is a "wrong" way to do it. If you do it wrong enough you can even risk developing tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. The right way isn't taught just because it's traditional, it's taught because the "right" way works. There are multiple "right" ways to learn the violin but this video is not one of them. Correct technique makes it easier.
Why don't some of you nasty scum baggs spend your time posting better videos, rather than putting down someone else, its easy to criticize, not so easy to improve.

Im sorry but lady that first bowing is not STACCATO, it's SPICCATO, which is "bouncing bow". Staccato is short and on the string entirely... hence-no lifting.
i just starting violin and i don't know if she is even doing this right i play other things like piano and flute but she dosen't look like a good teach i've been playing for 5 years and i have had only a russin teach and there the best
Russian teachers follow a different school of teaching... that form is dying out because they get injuries and have poor technique. well and we have found more economical ways of doing things
I have only just started learning violin (Im 28) Had two lessons by now,just learning how to hold the bow correctly and stuff.Wish I could play some carols by christmas,but watching these videos I thing its gonna be harder than I thought :-)
this is the WORST way to teach anyone, you shouldn't even be teaching beginners if you can't even tune your violin .. it's nearly a semitone flat!! You really need to sort out your own technique before you pass your bad techniques on to beginner violinists
just because 'expert' is in her username does not make her so. this woman is a novice and does not know what she is talking about. please do not listen to her - go check out ProfessorV. staccato is not off the string. tremolo is not always soft. you don't use the same weight into the string as you vary the distance of the bow closer and further from the bridge.
I think she is very helpful. I am a beginner and I've bought so called 'proper' beginner videos by expert players. They are far too advanced for. So, all you snobs out there saying she's doing everything wrong - don't watch !! She does things nice and simple at a nice beginner's pace. We can pick up all the niceties later.
OK I'm sorry but for the purpose of violin pedagogy I have to warn people away from these videos. This woman is not a violin teacher, she is a beginner. If you want to learn how to play you need a real teacher. These videos demonstrate terrible bow hold, terrible bow arm technique, terrible vibrato, bad intonation and not even particularly good advice. I'm not commenting just to be negative. You must not trust that these videos are in any way aligned with traditional violin teaching.

Additionally, you do not usually use PRESSURE when you play the violin. You use the naturally weight of your arm, unless for small moments of emotional emphasis. Just pulling the sound with the weight of your arm is enough to play a full fortissimo.
Yuck. Her bow hand is so hideous. The shape is wrong, but at least most who teach violin at least know that the pinky is curved and that the bow is not gripped in such a violent way; the fingers should be used as springs and the bow balanced. Sorry to sound harsh, but seeing is teaching too. Try to utilize correct violin technique yourself while teaching others...

she's not a very good teacher...her strings are out of tune, and sTacatto is on the string, while sPicatto is off the string. While she says stacatto, she plays spicatto...though it's easily confused.

This shouldn't even be on the internet. She can't even hold the bow correctly, the violin is out of tune, her tone is terrible, and you DO NOT move the position of your bow between the sound post and the fingerboard to change the volume.
try putting more pressure onto the bow that might help but not having a tight bow shouldnt make a diffrence. anyway if your trying to learn the violin this person is not good at all she is giving really bad

Seems more about people being used for ad revenue than violin playing IMO. I believe the "teachers" are doing as well as they can, but the fact is that there are many so much better on YouTube (and elsewhere). This company "teaches" on virtually any subject, but it's a lot more complex to demonstrate violin well than how to change the oil in one's car. People being mean? Overall, I think not, most comments come from people who just plain know what's up.

omg learn how to hold your bow seriously.... and your violin is out of tune and your bow must be perpendicular to the strings and the bow hair faces at your face not away... and your hand is way to stiff that is why you get pops at bow changes....

Im sorry but lady that first bowing is not STACCATO, it's SPICCATO, which is "bouncing bow". Staccato is short and on the string entirely... hence-no lifting.

Russian teachers follow a different school of teaching... that form is dying out because they get injuries and have poor technique. well and we have found more economical ways of doing things

I have only just started learning violin (Im 28) Had two lessons by now,just learning how to hold the bow correctly and stuff.Wish I could play some carols by christmas,but watching these videos I thing its gonna be harder than I thought :-)

this is the WORST way to teach anyone, you shouldn't even be teaching beginners if you can't even tune your violin .. it's nearly a semitone flat!! You really need to sort out your own technique before you pass your bad techniques on to beginner violinists

just because 'expert' is in her username does not make her so. this woman is a novice and does not know what she is talking about. please do not listen to her - go check out ProfessorV. staccato is not off the string. tremolo is not always soft. you don't use the same weight into the string as you vary the distance of the bow closer and further from the bridge.

I think she is very helpful. I am a beginner and I've bought so called 'proper' beginner videos by expert players. They are far too advanced for. So, all you snobs out there saying she's doing everything wrong - don't watch !! She does things nice and simple at a nice beginner's pace. We can pick up all the niceties later.

OK I'm sorry but for the purpose of violin pedagogy I have to warn people away from these videos. This woman is not a violin teacher, she is a beginner. If you want to learn how to play you need a real teacher. These videos demonstrate terrible bow hold, terrible bow arm technique, terrible vibrato, bad intonation and not even particularly good advice. I'm not commenting just to be negative. You must not trust that these videos are in any way aligned with traditional violin teaching.

Additionally, you do not usually use PRESSURE when you play the violin. You use the naturally weight of your arm, unless for small moments of emotional emphasis. Just pulling the sound with the weight of your arm is enough to play a full fortissimo.

Yuck. Her bow hand is so hideous. The shape is wrong, but at least most who teach violin at least know that the pinky is curved and that the bow is not gripped in such a violent way; the fingers should be used as springs and the bow balanced. Sorry to sound harsh, but seeing is teaching too. Try to utilize correct violin technique yourself while teaching others...

Those terms are used when playing violin, but....
For quarter note [1 beat]: You don't use the full bow
You don't use a staccato unless it says so.

I have never commented on a youtube video before. But I must appeal to those who think this is actual instruction: Please. Whatever you do, don' t try to learn from this girl. Almost everything she says is incorrect, and she plays out of tune. And she can't tune her instrument either. I have students who have been playing for 2 years who have more skill than this "expert."

she's not a very good teacher...her strings are out of tune, and sTacatto is on the string, while sPicatto is off the string. While she says stacatto, she plays spicatto...though it's easily confused.

But to play softer it's usually easier to just put less tension on the strings while playing.
Spiccato - you play at the BALANCE point which is about 1/3 of your bow length up from the bottom.

This shouldn't even be on the internet. She can't even hold the bow correctly, the violin is out of tune, her tone is terrible, and you DO NOT move the position of your bow between the sound post and the fingerboard to change the volume.

try putting more pressure onto the bow that might help but not having a tight bow shouldnt make a diffrence. anyway if your trying to learn the violin this person is not good at all she is giving really bad

Seems more about people being used for ad revenue than violin playing IMO. I believe the "teachers" are doing as well as they can, but the fact is that there are many so much better on YouTube (and elsewhere). This company "teaches" on virtually any subject, but it's a lot more complex to demonstrate violin well than how to change the oil in one's car. People being mean? Overall, I think not, most comments come from people who just plain know what's up.
