They are playing a junior level arrangement and it just so happens that the iniotial melody/theme is stated by a solo trumpet with accompaniment from the rest of the band.If you dobn't understand this idea, then you quite clearly haven't heard many concert band pieces. There are thousands of arrangements with solo instruments of all kinds. What are you talking about?

It's obvious the poor kid had a problem with his nerves (he was playing ok before the solo). He needs to know that every trumpet player makes mistakes and not to put so much weight on a simple little solo like this (though, honestly, the arrangement of the music left a lot to be desired, too)
