Well, economically at least when the plague left an area, the population had been diminished to the point where grain and food was in great surplus due to lack of consumers (of course due to horrible amount of dead people). This in turn, over time, enabled more livestock to be breed due to many areas not being cultivated allowing for livestock to graze (spelling?) and improved the quality of the food (meat etc.). Of course it was still, in comparison, a cruel period.

@1800414 Non-Muslims had limited rights, not as many as Muslims, they were second-class citizens. Also, calling the Jizyah a small tax is misleading, it's really as high or low as the ruler deemed fit. Muhammad himself extracted as much as a 50% tax on farm output from the Jews of Khayber in exchange for allowing them to keep their land (they were eventually expelled any way by the Caliph Umar).
Saying the jizyah was small is a dishonest apology for an oppressive practice.
@1800414 It's true that the Muslims were comparatively tolerant compared to Western Europe, but that doesn't mean they weren't brutal. The conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire in 1453 was absolutely no less brutal than the conquest of Jerusalem by the Crusaders a few centuries earlier.
First of all, I don´t like being offended, especially not in such a polemic way.
I do not know where your hatred for muslims comes from. I don´t sypathise with Islam either, but I think we should stick to the facts. Instead of "shit going on", there is reason going on.
The Byzantine Empire was the last frontier against the muslim filth and once it was gone the muslims reached Vienna and it took a lot of wars to clean Europe from their revolving existence.
@SPARTAN3071 Muslim filth? Really? If anyone was filthy at the time, it was Christian Europe. Prior to the Renaissance, it was Muslim Spain that found itself as a thriving civilization that was the rival to ancient Rome, not Catholic Europe. Muslim scholars preserved much of the wisdom of antiquity and added to it. Muslim controlled areas also saw much more religious tolerance than Christian areas of the time.
Monasteries were closed religious communities to which particularly devout priests, scholars, and believers withdrew for a life of prayer, study, and service. Monastic life was embraced by several religions, including Christianity and Buddhism. Residents of monasteries became known as monks.
In parts of Dark Age Europe, monasteries were the only remaining centers of learning. Irish monks, for example, were instrumental in preserving much ancient knowledge and spreading it back into Europe as the Dark Ages waned. Over time monasteries grew rich in donated land. They became very important local institutions as a source of educated men who could serve as administrators. They also provided health care and emergency relief from their stockpiles of food.
@issareign it's true that romans weren't romans, but i was referring to the greeks who took the roman name and of course the arabs are the same race of Caucasoid as are the europeans. war between the same race, just different culture.
Hmmm... They emphasize the whole "light in the darkness" imagery but they completely ignore some extremely important facts from the times. Where the hell is the beginning the the empire of Kievan Rus? There's your fucking light in the darkness.
@Vovk3 If they don't talk about Moorish Spain in the coming parts as well as Kiev or the mini-Renaissance that happened in England with Alfred the Great, I think I just may have to quit this documentary.

french had never been powerful, these were all germanics, also germanics who built the great Cathedrals, after germanics British were good fighters and after liberation of Iberia, spanish of course. BTW, the crusades have lost 2 very important battles because of the french, 1-Varna, 2- in tunisia; and the history as always repeats.
@arecccccc Just in "name", but in 700 franks were already the ancestors of the french (proto-franks (clovis)+gauls). So were the Franks were really powerful (from 800 onwards), they were "french".
At least most Christians admit the horrid history of Christianity. Muslims think their history is all peace and fairness, lol, while they murdered and subjucated and enslaved people. This video is evidence of that. The truth about Christianity's past is common knowledge in the west, Muslims dont have the same honesty about their own religion or history.
@tubester4567 well it wasnt all peace and fairnes but lesser bloody than yours. you who is hard for you to accept that people simply convinced by it and trying to make that arabs only coming from arabia not the most civilized nations of ancient times accepted it even it's too unlogic that could the arabian desert contains people could replace it's more populated neighbors so you say it was by sword even they mostly entered most places by only raiding party. I know is hard to accept :)
I thank Martel for helping preserve Western Civilization, it would have been a shame if the islamic armies had conquered it. I'm glad our civilization still stands, but we must remember the islamic threat still exists, just their tactics have changed.

@TiberiusFlavian The Western Civilization that Martel was preserving wasn't much to be excited over. Moorish Spain was out of the Dark Ages much earlier than the rest of Europe.
I cant believe they didn't mention the battle of Constantinople from 717-718.... That's where the real battle between Christianity and Islam happened. The arabs beseiged the city, but were defeated by the joined foces of the Byzantine empire and Bulgaria ....
Really? Really!? They tell us 20 minutes about battle of Tours, but did not mention the siege of Constantinopol of 718 AD. Yes that was a grandest battle in western europe for a very long time, but the siege was the most disasterous defeat of muslims ever.
@di0mitko There was another one after that (where they lost 200,000 men). Even when they prevailed in 1453 it took 8 weeks and they still lost tens of thousands of men (despite an almost 10:1 advantage). I think the only reason they won was because the defenders forgot to close one of the gates after a cavalry skirmish.
@pythag123 hahaha yea that is why taliban are beating america and have beat russia and every army that has invaded afghanistan has died that is why persia conquered so many countries, we beat the mongols who killed many europeans and made you there bitch we lived prosperous and clean in the medieval unlike you european who never showered and died of diseases, and who are you to say this the only fighting your family has part in is war video games
Ok son, spit out the Khat, take a breath and use a period now and then. 1) The "Taliban" is not Arab neither were the Persians, most are/were Aryan/Kurd. 2) You did not beat the monglos, ever hear of the sack of Bagdhdad, dumbass? Not even close to winning. 3) You may have been cleaner and better educated during the Dark Ages, but geuss what? We left the dark ages, you didn't, so go back to snipping the clits off little girls, pig.
@pythag123 and in this episode clearly you see moors my ancestors crushing the spanish and french who im also related what are you some idiot comming to watch only the battles?
@di0mitko Being the "most disastrous defeat of Muslims" doesn't make a battle significant. The Muslims lost due to the outbreak of plagues, and the battle - historically - is irrelevant since they eventually captured Constantinople anyway..
The battle of Tours is highly significant since it stopped what could have been a conquest of the entirety of Western Europe..
"Demonic" forces are just people and beeings that lived on this planet, died and are angry at how they have been treated through their lifetime. Or they are good, feel guilty and want to help the world. They are strong enough to refuse to reincarnate or go to whatever realm, and can be used and channeled through magicians* to harm or help others. Also they can attach to a soul.....
*basicly all christian, muslim, satanist, buddhist.... people enlightent and knowing enough.
@xtremejohnny69 you are missing the point here idiot. religion was only the excuse. it was an invasion of dirty arabs in europe. take religion out of it. you still have an invasion of dirty arabs in europe.
At this time, religion was just a tool, a tool used mostly (there were very few exceptions) to gain power for the people at the top. It didn't matter how many people died, as long as they got what they want. What better theologies than the monotheistic, Abrahamic faiths of Christianity and Islam, with their promises of the afterlife, to fuel blood-crazed massacres of each other? I wonder what would the world look like if neither of these religions existed...
@gbsedillo20 For better or for worst they changed history, if they didn't exist the world is very different in deed..they inspired great evils, but on the other hand, they became foundations of many civilizations..
@JASONNHENCHMENN, "save" Europe from what - a few thousand muslims? You see more men on football matches nowadays than in the combined armies of Charles Martel and his muslim opponents. Two warbands fighting - ridiculous. The real battle between christendom and islam was in 717 - at the walls of Constantinople. The real arab army, 200,000+ men besieged it and were defeated by the Bulgarians and Byzantines. They were the real saviors of Europe and Christianity, not the tiny frankish warband.
This is very inaccuracies and falsify of history. No the moors didn't look anything like what they are showing. Moors were black african people that came from sudan/upper egypt. The conquer of spain and part of france were africans not middle eastern. Arabs came 500 yrs after moors conquer spain and most of france.
@Thutmosis7 Moor refered to Berber, Blacks and Arabs, but generally meant Berbers, which are North Africans. Ghadafi would of been called a Berber leader back in the day. Though africans below the Sahra (blacks) and arabs were amoung the ranks of the moorish invasion, they were mostly North African Berbers from present day Libya and Egypt. It stayed an arabic nation until around 1100, then a declining territory until the Re-Conquesta pushed them out around 1492 or so.
@Fitzcard There also is confusion with Berber and Barbary. Berbers were probably German or Latin European who settled in Egypt and were absorbed by the Black race. North Africa was once called the Barbary states. The name was use to refer to Nubians. It is confusing because the White Berbers speak language identical to the White Vandals who ran North Africa for 400 years: blond hair blue eyes. But there were no Berbers indigenous to Egypt or were responsible for the building of Civilization
@Thutmosis7 it doesnt matter their colour as they were muslims. there is no ethinicity in islam. and arabs mix in north africa was so minor and it's obvious in their dialects till now. arabs is not really a race as it more an identity accpeted by arabic speakers as it was the only civilization that all equal. the conquered are equal in rights and not lesser than the conquerer. those desert dewelers behave civilized more than any others brother:)
Your a fool! Do you actually think everything in the world was created just like that. Sure religon has costed many wars but how many wars have the atheisists costed? Religon provides us a form of justice and understanding of the world
@guyaddictive I'm pretty sure it was in the name of "Allah". The Muslim religion revolved around praying or showing their faith to God, not an idealist or figure or a specific object. Of course that shows that they must be against so much "faith" and "blessing" going to Jesus, but I think I read in a translated copy of the Qur'an where " You must respect all religions" which revolves around monotheistic religions.
men who live by the sword shal die by the sword. Islam did not desire to use reason but force. The church stands for the holy Truth ( thou shalt not murder, not thou shalt not kill) Like King David, it is holy to kill Goliath, it is law and order, it is defending the innocent, it is righteouse to turn the other cheek and selfless to fight back for those who cannot. The blood of the Islamic peoples are on thier own head. Love without justice is evil. It is evil to not fight Islam.
@JASONNHENCHMENN It was Franks not French there wasnt such thing as French for what I know a Frank could be a German a Dutch a Belgian a Italian aswell if you count it in modern labbels
Also dont forget the Bulgarians and Eastern Romans that protected the Eastern Hemisphere of Europe in Constantinople against the Arabs
@TemplarX2 Frank can mean anything for Eastern it meant anyone from Europe for Iberian it meant anyone from outside of iberia from outside of pireneus. The Frankish Empire engulef big part of it is now Germany France Low Countries Belgium and Italy so no not only French are Franks in truth they werent a lot of Franks to begin with it even in "France" you had a lot of identies Aquitanie and Burgundy always strife for independence and Gascon Breton Flemish etc never saw themselfs as "French"
@ImperialGuard9001 You are really confused. Frank is a term that changes with time period. But the Frank we are talking about are the Salian Franks(Clovis Franks) and those are bound to the land of France although they ruled other people of other ethnicities. This is you say Charlemagne king of the Franks and the emperor of the HRE. Franks (Gallo-Franks) were the one that made first contact with the east and hence the extension of the name to all other Europeans.
@TemplarX2 further Frank as the proto-French and as an ethnic group does not apply to southern france but to Northern France (excluding britanny, Alsace), Belgium (both Wallonia and even Flanders). Italians and germans occitans (southern french), and Burgundians should not be included in that ethnic group. basically the salian Franks (mixed gauls and germanics) were the proto-French.
The Muslims during the 7-12th centuries translated almost all of the classical Greek and Roman works while Europe was plunged in the dark ages. This documentary does a poor job by saying christian monks translated most of the works, when in reality they really didn't have libraries of books in the thousands like Cairo, Cordoba, and Baghdad had in their prime, at least not until the Renaissance .
@OCG4 Actually the classical knowledge of Greco-Roman civilization was preserved by the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire. While learning centers in Western Europe decayed, learning centers in the east like Constantinople, Alexandria and Antioch flourished. The Muslims obtained these knowledge when they captured Egypt and the Near East from the Byzantines. Christian monks in west only preserved a small fragments of these ancient knowledge.
I'd like to add, regarding this video, that the Muslims (united, all together) first assaulted Byzantium (Byzantine-Arab wars). Then, after conquering a good chunk of the Byzantine Empire, they failed to take Constantinople. They split up, and one Caliphat (I think the Moors) marched on to modern-day France, while a couple decades before that another group besieged Constantinople again.
The least the History Channel could do is mention the Byzantines.
Thanks so much dude. My class watched this in school while I was out, so I needed to get the movie to write a paper. You saved me money and time, thanks.
@skippydeenice It is not religion, or more precisely it's not God, it's the human and what we make of our world! Many people blame the religion for bad things that happened in old times. I agree to them, many evil things were made in the name of God. But it is silly to believe we're better, you just have to imagine what future people will think about us: egoistic narrow minded people who knew about the ecologic threats and the catastrophic end of oil that will come but did NOTHING!
@Railriderchris Basically holy wars, destruction of knowledge hubs, etc etc are caused by religious people who do the exact opposite of what their religion commands. Christian Crusaders prosecuted muslims, but God's most known command is "thou shall not kill", etc etc.
On the contrary, religion is the case we are here today, it has preserved Byzantium (and the muslim world) and, later on, it preserved Western Europe.
It's not religion, it's the people that use it to justify their means to power
@zhshsG7 I absolutely agree. This was what i wanted to tell in my comment, that not the fact of being religious or not is the main thing, but what we humans do. Maybe i wasn't clear since english is not my native language and it is difficult to explain a thought in those limited posts ;-)
Europe had two universities in the entirety of the continent. When the Moors came they established 17 universities. To Europe they brought hot/cold water, lead pipes, windmills, paper mills, irrigation, the first eye glasses, algebra & trig, public libraries, street lamps, the astrolabe from Asia, African & Asian sails, as well as the maps to the New World Columbus used. They also let conquered people keep their language and culture. I'm no fan of Islam but the truth is the truth.
"they tried to kill a guy even though god said not to do it" AHHHHHHHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHA I cant breath now, I cant breath XD Ok alright let me catch my breath here, wewwwwwww any time 2 or more religous groups want to kill each other Im a happy a guy!
@JASONNHENCHMENN> Also don't forget Byzantine empire. It stopped the muslims into europe for centuries. Francs (not french) stopped them to intern more into europe, and specially the weather conditions in France and the resistance who was starting in northern Spain, stop them to go further.
@kakowb00sh It's a tad ironic that you have two 0's in your username. Did you know that it was the Islamic caliphates that spread the use of these numbers. They also built hospitals, post and mail systems, banks with branches as far as East as China and translated all the Ancient Greek and Roman and Egyptian texts into Persian and Arabic. Islamic society was at the time far more civilized and advanced than Western Europe.
As a student of history the enueducated, ignorant, hateful and bigoted fuelled, ridiculous, irrelevant and just plain incorrect comments here astonish me!!!
Charles Martel did not safe Europe from Islam! Muslims simply lost desire to conquer! Muslims did not care much for Europe. In their eyes it was poverty stricken land, which offers next to nothing! Muslims most likely were already content with what they gained, and they were interested more in the eastern lands, where Persia, India, and china than in the remote cold land!
@TheAntoninusPius It is speculation whether or not whether Abd al-Rahman intended to conquer the Kingdom of the Franks, but in 732 at Tours it is amlost certain that the force at Poitiers was just a very large raiding force. And the hero Martel only agreed to come to the assistance of Odo Duke of Aquitaine if he accepted his overlordship. Like Pelayo of Asturias, Tours has entered the mythology/hagiography of western European Christianity, and facts don't often sit nicely with myths.
@TheAntoninusPius They owe their wealth to Byzantine empire. Especially Turks. Islamic culture basically stole everything from Byzantine. Anyway, history proves Islam was a religion of conquests loooong before Christians decided to fight under a banner of religion. What starts with sword and fire, lives by sword and fire. This goes for ideologies. All muslims should be given a course in real history, not that bullshit they are told. When they accuse Europeans of silly Crusades, I laugh.
Most modern historians today agree that the Dark Ages were in fact not Dark at all, instead they were actually quite Light in terms of technology, prosperity and the like... of course one should not forget the great plague and all the disastrous events that took place, but often these were followed by far better times.

The Byzantine Empire was the last frontier against the muslim filth and once it was gone the muslims reached Vienna and it took a lot of wars to clean Europe from their revolving existence.
SPARTAN3071 3 months ago 2

SuperGreatSphinx 3 months ago
In parts of Dark Age Europe, monasteries were the only remaining centers of learning. Irish monks, for example, were instrumental in preserving much ancient knowledge and spreading it back into Europe as the Dark Ages waned. Over time monasteries grew rich in donated land. They became very important local institutions as a source of educated men who could serve as administrators. They also provided health care and emergency relief from their stockpiles of food.

At least most Christians admit the horrid history of Christianity. Muslims think their history is all peace and fairness, lol, while they murdered and subjucated and enslaved people. di0mitko 5 months ago 21

Thutmosis7 9 months ago
@Thutmosis7 Moor refered to Berber, Blacks and Arabs, but generally meant Berbers, which are North Africans. Ghadafi would of been called a Berber leader back in the day. Though africans below the Sahra (blacks) and arabs were amoung the ranks of the moorish invasion, they were mostly North African Berbers from present day Libya and Egypt. It stayed an arabic nation until around 1100, then a declining territory until the Re-Conquesta pushed them out around 1492 or so.
Fitzcard 9 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@Fitzcard There also is confusion with Berber and Barbary.
Thutmosis7 9 months ago
@Thutmosis7 it doesnt matter their colour as they were muslims. there is no ethinicity in islam. and arabs mix in north africa was so minor and it's obvious in their dialects till now. arabs is not really a race as it more an identity accpeted by arabic speakers as it was the only civilization that all equal. the conquered are equal in rights and not lesser than the conquerer. those desert dewelers behave civilized more than any others brother:)

Also dont forget the Bulgarians and Eastern Romans that protected the Eastern Hemisphere of Europe in Constantinople against the Arabs
ImperialGuard9001 1 year ago
@ImperialGuard9001 Franks usually refers to the inhabitant of France. They were a Gallic-germanic mixed civilization and basically the proto-French.
TemplarX2 10 months ago
@TemplarX2 Frank can mean anything for Eastern it meant anyone from Europe for Iberian it meant anyone from outside of iberia from outside of pireneus. The Frankish Empire engulef big part of it is now Germany France Low Countries Belgium and Italy so no not only French are Franks in truth they werent a lot of Franks to begin with it even in "France" you had a lot of identies Aquitanie and Burgundy always strife for independence and Gascon Breton Flemish etc never saw themselfs as "French"
ImperialGuard9001 10 months ago
@ImperialGuard9001 You are really confused. Frank is a term that changes with time period. But the Frank we are talking about are the Salian Franks(Clovis Franks) and those are bound to the land of France although they ruled other people of other ethnicities. This is you say Charlemagne king of the Franks and the emperor of the HRE. Franks (Gallo-Franks) were the one that made first contact with the east and hence the extension of the name to all other Europeans.
TemplarX2 10 months ago

OCG4 1 year ago
@OCG4 Actually the classical knowledge of Greco-Roman civilization was preserved by the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire. While learning centers in Western Europe decayed, learning centers in the east like Constantinople, Alexandria and Antioch flourished. The Muslims obtained these knowledge when they captured Egypt and the Near East from the Byzantines. Christian monks in west only preserved a small fragments of these ancient knowledge.
MrLantean 6 months ago
The franks were so smart that it doesn't seem like they were in the dark ages at all.
stephentsang2000 1 year ago
I'd like to add, regarding this video, that the Muslims (united, all together) first assaulted Byzantium (Byzantine-Arab wars). Then, after conquering a good chunk of the Byzantine Empire, they failed to take Constantinople. They split up, and one Caliphat (I think the Moors) marched on to modern-day France, while a couple decades before that another group besieged Constantinople again.
The least the History Channel could do is mention the Byzantines.

Railriderchris 1 year ago
@Railriderchris Basically holy wars, destruction of knowledge hubs, etc etc are caused by religious people who do the exact opposite of what their religion commands. Christian Crusaders prosecuted muslims, but God's most known command is "thou shall not kill", etc etc.
On the contrary, religion is the case we are here today, it has preserved Byzantium (and the muslim world) and, later on, it preserved Western Europe.
It's not religion, it's the people that use it to justify their means to power
zhshsG7 1 year ago

TheAntoninusPius 1 year ago
@TheAntoninusPius It is speculation whether or not whether Abd al-Rahman intended to conquer the Kingdom of the Franks, but in 732 at Tours it is amlost certain that the force at Poitiers was just a very large raiding force. And the hero Martel only agreed to come to the assistance of Odo Duke of Aquitaine if he accepted his overlordship. Like Pelayo of Asturias, Tours has entered the mythology/hagiography of western European Christianity, and facts don't often sit nicely with myths.
ikkoikki 1 year ago
@TheAntoninusPius They owe their wealth to Byzantine empire. Especially Turks. Islamic culture basically stole everything from Byzantine. Anyway, history proves Islam was a religion of conquests loooong before Christians decided to fight under a banner of religion. What starts with sword and fire, lives by sword and fire. This goes for ideologies. All muslims should be given a course in real history, not that bullshit they are told. When they accuse Europeans of silly Crusades, I laugh.
