What happens is that as time goes on, the only music you hear from the past is the best of it. This creates the illusion that everything from that time was great as well. I was thoroughly disgusted with music in the 80's as it was happening. But in hindsight there were some gems mixed in with the crap.
And I am here to say, that when Livin' Thing and Telephone Line first arrived, many did not understand, but one thing was certain... There was five of us who did.
Always reminds me of being in a pub in Jersey in 2004... put this on the juke-box and got a pub full of builders singing along with me at the top of our voices!!
Nothing beats the 70's Music , it was so upbeat and happy . I like some of the newer music but it seems like alot of the music now is violent and nothing to make you want to get up and dance . But that is the change thru the generations :(
@TheHeroesdeath Your comment is so correct. I have it in the same way as you. Im 57 now but still like the new stuff - beside the old stuff. Why is it always a fight between the old and the new music. If this is the only thing people can argue about - then it is a shame. Enjoy the music - no matter which time it is from. BR from Denmark
ELO was one of my great musical loves during the 70s - what Nowadays I get on an ELO jag, where it's all I want to hear for days...then I "can't get it out of my head."If you want a truly great ELO album, listen to "Eldorado," their "rock opera."
Why doesn't this sort of music get more listens these days? We were broke then too, but at least we had friends, music, and often grass... all of which could make a party. We weren't as scared and angry then. It's like they WANT us to be. Damn hatred!
I think this is one of the most representative songs of ELO, because it includes so many elements that make out their style. Add Horace Wimp's diary for the vocoder effects and you got an idea of what ELO is/was. And then you can listen to the rest of their songs...
I'm only 20, so didnt really grow up in this Era (sadly) But let me tell you, not a day goes by that i dont listen to and fully appreciate, the fantastic musical talents of Jeff Lynne, as well as other bands such as 10cc, The Jam, and many others. This was back when music took ACTUAL talent to make and not the simple push of a button. FANTASTICO!!!!
Many ppl have commented on these videos why ELO isn't in the Hall of Rock. They aren't underestimated they just don't fit in. They aren't rock or any other genre of typical acknowledgement. They are the best and will always be in a class of their own.
Quite true as Buggles sang video killed the radio star,MTV killed alot more than that. The likes of ELO will never be seen again.......We are lucky we lived it!
you know what pisses me off? every freaking song from the 80s or earlier has people either argueing or complining that the music from now sucks and this was so much better. im a 15 year old and i love music from the 40s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, and the music from now! music changes! people have opinions. if you wernt so stuck on music from now sucking, maybe you would like some of it! just love the music and dont put other music down! music is music. now go listen to livin' thing cus its awesome! :)

@TheHeroesdeath Yeah but being 15, and saying you listen to music from now, means you probably like Slipknot, which makes anything you have to say irrelevant.

@123IN321OUT - Thank you. It's amazing how many people think that, isn't it? If they listened closely to the lyrics, they're notice that the song eludes to a love affair being "a livin' thing" and not wanting to lose it.
ELO: a phenomenon, an experience, an ocean you take a dive into because you want to immerse yourself in the magical melodies, the rhythms, the gorgeous orchestration with all of the stringed instrument and the genius of Jeff Lynne (xoxox) and everything that is THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA. Je t'adore.

@rickyq61 I know the feeling. I feel like I missed out on the 70's. It seems like it was such a magcal time. I feel I got gyped. Everything sucks now.
sorry to burst your bubble Waynesguitar, but this song is about an unwanted pregnancy and an abortion...does it still remind you of the love you had for your girlfriend?
@mrjohnmcg lmao no it's not - that's terrible. I can sort of see that from the chorus and the 1st line of the 2nd verse but come on. That's just terrible...and untrue.
sorry to burst your bubble Waynesguitar, but this song is about an unwanted pregnancy and an abortion...does it still remind you of the love you had for your girlfriend?
I remember when this record came out in 1975 and I rushed into the city of sydney and bought an 'import' record, which cost around $7.00 (big money than) and I still have it and it was a record that just became a part of your life. Yeah, i did get an afro hair cut and listened to disco music, but ELO were always in my heart.....great days great days. Where has the world gone now with regard to music....??????????

It was 1982, someone forgot this ELO album at my father's market. It stayed there for a while and as I noticed that nobody came after it I took it home to have a listen. I was a 9 y.o. brazilian boy. It was my 1st rock album and this song never went away from my head. Some things u just carry w/ u for the rest of your life.
I brought this album in 76 for the telephone line song; it is the nice surprise when you buy for one song and realize it is a master piece with great hidden songs not on the playlist. I have listened to all there albums since. I would one day like to listen to ELO with music only with out words. I brainwashed my teenage daughters into liking ELO as I always played it in my vehicle. music which you can tune into.
Am I wrong or because I was forced to watch an advertisement before I heard this music, this user is using ELO, which they likely have no claim to, in order to make money through their YouTube partnership?
I thing this is morally corrupt, or at least annoying.
@jtrevillion21 and i'll bet if you were over 11 in 1976 you had an afro too. can you say "it was the style" and accept it? we were very cool we listened to very cool music. we drove very cool cars. we had the coolest clothes. can you say that? didn't think so.
What happens is that as time goes on, the only music you hear from the past is the best of it. This creates the illusion that everything from that time was great as well. I was thoroughly disgusted with music in the 80's as it was happening. But in hindsight there were some gems mixed in with the crap.

sorry to burst your bubble Waynesguitar, but this song is about an unwanted pregnancy and an abortion...does it still remind you of the love you had for your girlfriend?
mrjohnmcg 9 months ago
@mrjohnmcg No. Think again. it is about the joy of being in love and a mature but bittersweet realization that love can be fleeting.
If he wanted to speak about abortion, do you really think he would've played such an uptempo, sing-a-long?
curt1030 9 months ago
@mrjohnmcg lmao no it's not - that's terrible. I can sort of see that from the chorus and the 1st line of the 2nd verse but come on. That's just terrible...and untrue.

I thing this is morally corrupt, or at least annoying.

jtrevillion21 11 months ago
@jtrevillion21 and i'll bet if you were over 11 in 1976 you had an afro too. can you say "it was the style" and accept it? we were very cool we listened to very cool music. we drove very cool cars. we had the coolest clothes. can you say that? didn't think so.
