  • What happens is that as time goes on, the only music you hear from the past is the best of it. This creates the illusion that everything from that time was great as well. I was thoroughly disgusted with music in the 80's as it was happening. But in hindsight there were some gems mixed in with the crap.

  • reminds of going on shit holidays to caravan parks in a crappy escort that always broke down.

  • Simply brilliant music! Then in the 70's and even now!

  • RIP Kelly Groucutt

  • And I am here to say, that when Livin' Thing and Telephone Line first arrived, many did not understand, but one thing was certain... There was five of us who did.

  • You know what pisses me off? That all the music from the 20th Century is better than todays bullshit. Im surrounded by bullshit.

  • Boogie Nights. Psychedelic wonderment. Ecstasy and bliss.

  • Kto tu z RED TUBE? :d

  • being cool is Jeff Lynne....frontman, producer, trailblazer!

  • WARNING: This contains strong Violince

    ;)

  • Musical Genius' - Its Great To Hear Alot Of Their Stuff In MoviesShows How Powerful It Is!!!!!!111

  • 8 people are dying things

  • Still sounds as fresh as when it came out all those years ago.magic

  • MUSIC....is expressive beauty and art...to love music you must appreciate all of it!!!

  • I guess ELO really liked strings in their music. I don't dislike that; I think it's great. You've got to have the wisdom to pull it off, though.

  • The movie Boogie Nights brought me here.

  • Always reminds me of being in a pub in Jersey in 2004... put this on the juke-box and got a pub full of builders singing along with me at the top of our voices!!

  • Too much hair... xD

  • IF I HAD TO BE A LEAD VOCALIST FOR A BAND, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A BAND LIKE ELO. THEY ARE SUPER COOL. JEFF LYNNE IS A GENIUS.

  • Quality!

  • Ah, what memories this brings back! It reminds me of the 70s love of my life and her "sweet desire." Thanks for posting.

  • I love music from house to straus.

Why make trouble music is for everone.

And it doesnt matter what music.

  • Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

  • pure class

  • so glad my dad brought me up on these. this song is one of my earliest memories...been into this band all my life and i'm 24

  • Nothing beats the 70's Music , it was so upbeat and happy . I like some of the newer music but it seems like alot of the music now is violent and nothing to make you want to get up and dance . But that is the change thru the generations :(

  • @TheHeroesdeath Your comment is so correct. I have it in the same way as you. Im 57 now but still like the new stuff - beside the old stuff. Why is it always a fight between the old and the new music. If this is the only thing people can argue about - then it is a shame. Enjoy the music - no matter which time it is from. BR from Denmark

  • I grew up listening to ELO ... I am blessed! lol least i didnt grow up listening to manufactured naff factor

  • IMORTAL !!!

  • I'm a star, I'm a star. I'm a big bright shining star...

  • Gawd dam you xanadu...

  • ELO was one of my great musical loves during the 70s - what Nowadays I get on an ELO jag, where it's all I want to hear for days...then I "can't get it out of my head."If you want a truly great ELO album, listen to "Eldorado," their "rock opera."

Why doesn't this sort of music get more listens these days? We were broke then too, but at least we had friends, music, and often grass... all of which could make a party. We weren't as scared and angry then. It's like they WANT us to be. Damn hatred!

  • I think this is one of the most representative songs of ELO, because it includes so many elements that make out their style. Add Horace Wimp's diary for the vocoder effects and you got an idea of what ELO is/was. And then you can listen to the rest of their songs...

  • i love this song, whenever i hear it something just clicks inside me thanks for putting it on xxxx

  • I'm only 20, so didnt really grow up in this Era (sadly) But let me tell you, not a day goes by that i dont listen to and fully appreciate, the fantastic musical talents of Jeff Lynne, as well as other bands such as 10cc, The Jam, and many others. This was back when music took ACTUAL talent to make and not the simple push of a button. FANTASTICO!!!!

  • 16 back then, ELO, Floyd, Queen, Quo, Fleetwood Mac, we didn't know what to listen first, those were the days !!!

  • Many ppl have commented on these videos why ELO isn't in the Hall of Rock. They aren't underestimated they just don't fit in. They aren't rock or any other genre of typical acknowledgement. They are the best and will always be in a class of their own.

  • STILL THE BEST SONG OF ELO SUPER GREAT NO.1

  • I remember i had a New World Record on a casette tape, one of my first pop albums, and playing this song over and over again :-))

  • i was like 4 when this came out but can remember it well.brings back memories from then

  • The absolute best

  • OH MAN, THAT VIOLIN!

  • Quite true as Buggles sang video killed the radio star,MTV killed alot more than that. The likes of ELO will never be seen again.......We are lucky we lived it!

  • Turn to Stone is one the best songs by ELO - love their stuff - was fortunuate to go to see them in concert about 20 years ago !!

  • @Larvaeloo sure about that they split in 1986....

  • Everyone else in my dorm hall blasts pop, rock and modern day music. I have louder speakers and am blaring this! Who's winning now?! =)

  • you know what pisses me off? every freaking song from the 80s or earlier has people either argueing or complining that the music from now sucks and this was so much better. im a 15 year old and i love music from the 40s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, and the music from now! music changes! people have opinions. if you wernt so stuck on music from now sucking, maybe you would like some of it! just love the music and dont put other music down! music is music. now go listen to livin' thing cus its awesome! :)

  • @TheHeroesdeath there is a few good bands about today, BUT majority of it is cheap, manufactured and rushed tosh. It seems that now is all about image and not content.

  • @TheHeroesdeath well said, i love music for what it is. both my boys are into different stuff but we all respect each others taste

  • @TheHeroesdeath Yeah but being 15, and saying you listen to music from now, means you probably like Slipknot, which makes anything you have to say irrelevant.

  • @cronic8350 nah, nobody likes slipknot :)

  • @TheHeroesdeath Thats because yr 15 you little twerp ...... nearly everything you listen too is based on a previous preformer or a direct cover version ..... even 80% of clothing fashion is based on old stuff ......... now do yr home work and piss off to bed

  • @TheHeroesdeath THANK YOU!!!

  • @TheHeroesdeath PREACH IT

  • @TheHeroesdeath right on!!!!! I'm OLD, and I still play in a band, NOT a cover band, a punk band...good music is good music, period

  • @TheHeroesdeath

And what did you say your Mum feed you with??? ;D xxx

  • @TheHeroesdeath Hey dude I agree with you when I was a your age I listened to all of this music growing up with my dad he played everything from deep purple to ELO allan parsons project, pinkfloyd and yah I love this song too and all my friends made fun of me cuz I didn't just listen to rap and i was 15 snoop had just made his first album. If you like this song then check out the boogie nights soundtrack full of goodies. you got taste fuck everyone else.

  • @TheHeroesdeath

It's because music in the last 5 years isn't designed to be good, its designed to be catchy and sell, then be forgotten about.

  • @CoolsPlosed music then was like that; that's why you don't remember them. there's also music being made now that will be remembered in 30 years.

  • @TheHeroesdeath Ok..Give me some examples of evolved great music of today????Anything as epic as this song or anything else from other decades..Anything..Then you convince me.

  • @TheHeroesdeath waaaaaaaaaaaa! get over it.

  • @TheHeroesdeath

Yeah I hope U right but I doub that gangsta rap don't turn millions to sweet dreams after 30 something years. Or I hope so at least.

    Have a good life .

  • @TheHeroesdeath

good point, but music today clearly isn't of the quality or caliber of the music of the past.

  • now i know why the best beatle george harrisson loved him!

  • Getting older sucks except for 2 things-memories and music.I'm 44 and so glad I grew up with great pop music like this b4 it all went to mtv & shit.

  • Oh WOW I Love this song

  • ninjatunashoes you are so right! glad some of the youth of today can appreciate music writing and performances like this. check out elo's "Mr Blue Sky". Just as good.

  • Listen to Smokie - Needles and Pins and listen for the similarities.

  • It's not about abortion, you morrons.

  • @123IN321OUT Check again dude..It's definitely about abortion....

  • @apolloton1 No...It's about love between two people. The "living thing" is dying love NOT a fetis. I can see how people could confuse it,but Jeff Lynn himself said the song isn't about abortion. People create imaginary metaphors out of things. Later.

  • @123IN321OUT - Thank you. It's amazing how many people think that, isn't it? If they listened closely to the lyrics, they're notice that the song eludes to a love affair being "a livin' thing" and not wanting to lose it.

  • I LOVE THIS TUNE MAN!!!!

  • ELO: a phenomenon, an experience, an ocean you take a dive into because you want to immerse yourself in the magical melodies, the rhythms, the gorgeous orchestration with all of the stringed instrument and the genius of Jeff Lynne (xoxox) and everything that is THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA. Je t'adore.

  • These guys could rock the violin......along with Jethro Tull

  • @58dhart Ian Anderson ( Jethro Tull ) is known for playing flute...not violin

  • what is "living thing" referring to. I remember this song from Boogie Nights.

  • @oweneden It is an anti-abortion song. It is ironic that many women who had abortions like this song and yet they have no idea what it is about. Listen to the words, people.

  • its a giving thing....what a terrible thing to loose!

ELO....from where are you come from and why are u making this amazing music?

  • god he sounds like george singing

  • There are 6 who like Justin Bieber better....... Amazing.....

  • First time I heard this I saved my cash and ran out and got it - hooked on them forever, got almost every record and can recognise Jeff Lynnes work anywhere... Only one other group did that to me - Y&T another group who are underrated...

  • im 24 an this is a beast of a tune along with many other golden oldies

  • im 15 and this came on the radio yesterday, and im been listening to it non stop ever since, i hate the music of today like rihanna and shit, why cant this get the credit it deserves?!

  • @ninjatunashoes

LOL it did ...it did.....but you had to be around then.....the best era for music EVER !!!

  • @ninjatunashoes it is by young people like you who appreciate the music of days gone by, not the crap that's played today. listen to elo's 'turn to stone'

  • @unoalice333 lol

  • @ninjatunashoes Couldn't agree more man. Kesha makes me want to murder a dog........she has to die!

  • @ninjatunashoes

You know that Rihanna isn't the only artist out there right? Music now is far more diverse than its ever been before. If you hate music today you just plain hate music.

  • @ninjatunashoes Well said young sir!

  • @ninjatunashoes

Agreed. But I bet you'd smash Rihanna's back doors in? :)

  • @ninjatunashoes who cares about ur age?

  • @XxBytxuxX i do

  • @ninjatunashoes I feel sorry for the kids of today. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and there was so much great music, (80's too) Don't know what went wrong. MTV seemed to change everything.............. Keep listening.

  • Con esta rola se describe casi casi a los 70´s Es una obra maestra.

  • Great music timeless....... i love this song a masterpiece back to the 70s......

  • HOLLANDSE RECLAME!

  • Man.......good times! I love this song!

  • I love this song.

  • I’ve just published a novel called The Mission of the Sacred heart, based on a classic ELO album, filled with secret messages for ELO fans. Available on Amazon!

  • I had often heard this song when I was little kid, its melodies was just memorized in my head, Awesome song.

  • Why do the record companies insist on promoting the crap that they generally do today?! There are lots of great musicians out there of this caliber, writing more great music. It is a shame that we don't get to hear it unless we happen to stumble upon it on this site or something of the like.

  • @doctortabby Simple answer mate, MONEY. They would rather back shit from the x factor or Britains got talent etc than good young bands. Sad really. My kids think i`m a dinosaur, Thank god we`ve got music like this to remind us how it can and should be done, timeless.

  • One of my all-time favorites. Thanks for posting.

  • what thw hell.. blow me'

  • blow me

  • ELO!

  • One of the best tunes EVER

  • Best song ever

  • The violin is awesome but the disco sound is pure crap! The violin sound is the only reason this song is anything at all.

  • @PGComet ...disco sound? This is early progressive rock. Bee Gees (which imho were a great band) are that way----->>>>

  • love this song

  • The lead and background are as tripped-out as anything from Lennon & Mccartney. Higher and Higher Baby. :-)

  • @shack8110 ...lead and backing vocals

  • 6 people must be dead things

  • I remember this back when I was younger..One of ELO's best.

  • Comment removed

  • wow i was 16, seems like a long time ago. lol i guess it was, wish we could go back.

  • @rickyq61 I know the feeling. I feel like I missed out on the 70's. It seems like it was such a magcal time. I feel I got gyped. Everything sucks now.

  • 2:00 HE'S BALLACHINIAN!!!

  • Way before my time, but gosh, what this country needs right now is some more great music that celebrates life like this wonderful song.

  • my favorite song

  • sorry to burst your bubble Waynesguitar, but this song is about an unwanted pregnancy and an abortion...does it still remind you of the love you had for your girlfriend?

  • @mrjohnmcg No. Think again. it is about the joy of being in love and a mature but bittersweet realization that love can be fleeting.

If he wanted to speak about abortion, do you really think he would've played such an uptempo, sing-a-long?

  • @mrjohnmcg lmao no it's not - that's terrible. I can sort of see that from the chorus and the 1st line of the 2nd verse but come on. That's just terrible...and untrue.

  • @mrjohnmcg bull

  • sorry to burst your bubble Waynesguitar, but this song is about an unwanted pregnancy and an abortion...does it still remind you of the love you had for your girlfriend?

  • Great record. Their best selling album.

  • I remember when this record came out in 1975 and I rushed into the city of sydney and bought an 'import' record, which cost around $7.00 (big money than) and I still have it and it was a record that just became a part of your life. Yeah, i did get an afro hair cut and listened to disco music, but ELO were always in my heart.....great days great days. Where has the world gone now with regard to music....??????????

  • It was 1982, someone forgot this ELO album at my father's market. It stayed there for a while and as I noticed that nobody came after it I took it home to have a listen. I was a 9 y.o. brazilian boy. It was my 1st rock album and this song never went away from my head. Some things u just carry w/ u for the rest of your life.

  • 76 eh... I was 19 too ain't 19 no more, but when I hear this song .....ah you know 19 forever

  • @mayoesque haa wel im jsut 19, dont worry, I'll make it count! :D

  • Always reminds me of the credits to Boogie Nights

    Great song

  • I brought this album in 76 for the telephone line song; it is the nice surprise when you buy for one song and realize it is a master piece with great hidden songs not on the playlist. I have listened to all there albums since. I would one day like to listen to ELO with music only with out words. I brainwashed my teenage daughters into liking ELO as I always played it in my vehicle. music which you can tune into.

  • Another 70's pure genius masterpiece.

  • The first few lines are possibly the sexiest in music history! lol

  • 6 people just aren't enjoy THE LIVING THING tisk tisk

  • the six people who do not like, like shit!

  • Am I wrong or because I was forced to watch an advertisement before I heard this music, this user is using ELO, which they likely have no claim to, in order to make money through their YouTube partnership?

I thing this is morally corrupt, or at least annoying.

  • @XxnegociatorxX Your damm right......

  • i loved and still do back in the days that my friends prefered hearing disco music back in the bronx it sure is a LIVING THING...

  • Love E.L.O. Birmingham City band!!!!

  • splendide:)

  • The violin will someday be in the Smithsoneon.

  • Perfection!

  • GREATTTTTT!

  • Waynesguitar: I bet u had an afro, but yea it is a cool song.

  • @jtrevillion21 and i'll bet if you were over 11 in 1976 you had an afro too. can you say "it was the style" and accept it? we were very cool we listened to very cool music. we drove very cool cars. we had the coolest clothes. can you say that? didn't think so.

  • I'm a star... I'm a star. I'm a star. I'm a star... I'm a big bright shining star

  • This song holds such sweet memories for me.

  • @WarBenifit156 No i didn't. Is there shit stuck in your eyes?

  • "So I'm going to be nice, I'm going to ask you one more time. Where the fuck is Ringo?

    I am a star. I'm a star, I'm a star, I'm a star. I am a big, bright, shining star. That's right."
