  • I bet he was so high

  • E.C. <3

  • wow those chicks sure hate those tambourines

  • my dick unzipped my pants and poked his head out and lip-synched to this song!!!!!!!!!!!! weow!!!!!!

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!

  • Belo timbre

  • Alcaholic face...

  • Marcy Levy and Yvonne Elliman? Wow...

  • R.I.P. Dick

  • "On the Cream album of the same name"...Uh, no, the album was called "Goodbye". Thanks, BBC4. On another note, I really want a beat-up black Stratocaster to call my own...

  • Whatever happened to George Terry ?

  • @TelecasterLPGTop - he's doing fine

  • is that Yvonne Elliman doing backing vocals....

  • @FMHammyJ Yes, it is, along with Marcella Detroit.

  • Brilliant band. What i love about Eric's playing is his improvisation.

  • The percussionist is earning money for old rope...

  • I believe in this live version of badge lets me know grey whistle test was a show not to be missed have to be honest and say this was way before my time thankfully it stands the test of time how the guitar should be played in my eyes i should think people in this country have played this at their leisure for years and certainly with von elliman on tamborine theres no need to dance its very clear that the ladies are in rhythem with clapton and the band alternative to making love watch this class.

  • That's Marcella Detroit of Shakespear's Sister on backing vocals along with Yvonne Ellman. Who is the fella doing co-lead with Eric, does anyone know please ?

  • @davebest2001

The guitarist playing w/ Eric is George Terry...this was the Eric Clapton Band I. Tulsan Carl Radle played the bass for Eric for years...RIP Carl, you are missed. GREAT video, thanks for sharing!!! I LUV all the Marcy (Levy then) Detroit stuff, a match made in heaven.

  • @TulsaLaniB Thanks for that info

  • @TulsaLaniB Thank TulsaLaniB

  • @davebest2001 George Terry

  • @brinkmaned Thanks Brinkmaned

  • George Terry

  • Why is he playing this so effin' fast? Ruins the whole groove of the song!

  • @ocean4315 yea, his second solos i have always noticed he kind of just goes at it and tries new stuff, thats where he's playing especially fast... first solo he kills to (maybe a slight overkill), but this is still my favorite live version of this song. To answer your question though: hes probably on a little coke or something, he needs to take a drink break. I know when i take adderall i always overplay my solos as well... but come on the guy is just fuckin unbelievable, you have to admit.

  • Poor old Eric—Back guitarist with that musicman guitar+humbuckers+musicman 112rp amp, totally smokes Eric...

Eric, mate, when you put together these backing bands, be careful not to select young back up guitarists who're gonna smoke yer ass...

  • @kewlfonz Clapton was completely drunk during this exibition. In an interview he stated that he didn't remember playing in this TV show. If he were sober, he would have been in God-mode as usual.

  • @kewlfonz he's not that old. ;D

  • who is the cat on percussion?

  • @jokkoe I dunno but check out Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Ellimann) on tamborine from the movie version of Jesus Christ Superstar. She recorded and toured with him in the '70's.

  • yeah, I don't mean to knock her talent but i read his book!

  • It sure wouldn't be a bad thing having Yvonne Elliman on tour with you.

  • @cvjucla3 Do you mean to sing with, to sleep with or both?

  • @jokkoe Both. But really it would be just nice having her around, because of her beautiful voice, good looks, and coolness.

  • So fluid.

  • friggin over populated stage. what was necessary??

  • @mensamoo Yes. At that time he wanted to stop being the Lone Virtuoso, and instead have a lot of texture in his music.

  • That's the legendary blackye, nice to see it.

  • george harrison and clapton wrote this song..

  • @Beatles6919 the line “told you about the swans, that they live in the park”, was Ringo’s contribution to the song…

  • @186kms ok cool..

  • Think Eric should tour with Marcy Levy again.

  • Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, George Simms?

  • I wouldn't be too critical of old EC during this period. He was downing 2 bottles of vodka a day at the time (just look at his puffy eyes and face). Don't know how he can even stand up, but still has the chops. We all should do so well.

  • thank you Eric Clapton for inspiring me to play guitar

  • Clapton actually fell slightly behind the beat momentarily while soloing. ( just past 2:30)

    He's played better.

Clapton flipped out many years ago when the critics who used to write in reverent tones about him said that he was "playing cliches" implying that he'd lost his magic.

Nowadays all he does is play those cliches (I know because I was lifting many of the same lix from CREAM albums and playing them myself back in the 60's) and of course that's seemingly what fans want to hear.

  • @HOUNDDAWG I hate to see it but I think he peaked about 1968....haa

  • @HOUNDDAWG absolutely ... I can hardly listen to his incessant noodling over the past 30 years or more

  • @HackerGuitarist "incessant noodling"?

    Too funny!

    You make me laff!

(But Eric ain't laughing I bet)

  • WOW! never seen clapton outplayed by another guitar player on the same stage. who is the other guitar player? that's what you call SKILLZ

  • @BigTimeBluesFan989 I think it's George Terry

  • eric clapton looks different every year anyone notice that!?

  • 1:52 'Badge was co-written by George Harrison who is listed as "L'Angelo Misterioso" on the Cream album of the same same'

What? The album was 'Goodbye' :s

  • @StraitKnopfler they also misquoted the year of this Whistle Test performance as '74....its '77...you have the backup singers he used on Slowhand ('77)...good lineup....someone at Whistle Test sure messed up ;)

  • Who is the large headed sea captain performing an experiment on the percussion instruments @ 1:05?

  • he is not sober! wow.

  • @russbrinn Actually looking at the rest of the show he looked a bit drunk. :) He still played well. Check out Double Trouble from the same programme.

  • Right, was watching this, HOW FUCKED IS ERIC CLAPTON? He's laughing the whole way through the song!

  • @masterofscotland VERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Funny that...I saw this on TV the other day and thought "That's not 1974" from the clothes and hairstyles. Who are the girls on backing vocals? They're really good.

  • @AK2927 Marcy Levy (Marcella Detroit) and Yvonne Elliman.

  • He sounds a bit like pete townshend.

  • The old grey whistle just brings out the best in everyone just like Massey Hall 1971 did for Neil Young or Whiskey a Go Go did for the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Love. Oh I wasn't there I'm just guessing .. I have no idea if Eric Clapton is good or bad. I have no taste.

  • @cooltooth112 , thanks for that info on George Terry, for sure a tremendous guitar player, Thank god EC cleaned up and sounds great ever since !!!!!

  • Strats sound like toys and have sustain of a banjo!

  • @Snotra That must be why they're the preferred choice of countless great guitarists.

  • Lacks cowbell.

  • @Samueltrad you lack cowbell

  • @PuRpLeWiSdOm1620 Come on, it was meant to be a joke about the obvious excess of percussion there is in this particular rendition of a great song. If you can count the number of percussion instruments, you will receive three Dora the Explorer stars!

  • This Band is The 1st.time visit Japan in 1974.

    But no percussion.

    Eric,evonne,George, Carl,Jaimie and Macy.

  • capricious71 .....I know man!! The song is from 69!

I said about the year!! This is "old grey whistle test", august, 1974!! I have this on DVD

  • Comment removed

  • This is after 461 Ocean Boulevard album, 1974, not 1977!

  • @1988WHISKY Sorry to correct you but the programme was recorded in 1977. The song's not on 461 Ocean Boulevard. It goes back to 1969 when he was in Cream.

  • the great Clapton must have still been hammered by drugs and booze, The slide player G Terry far outshines EC and the girls far out do EC in the vocals, ok version but have heard much better in latter years !!!! see 1985s .

  • @williamgdrew Very true. The Hartford 1985 show is the definitive performance of Badge.

  • @williamgdrew George was not considered just the slide player, he played lead a lot and I mean a whole, whole lot. Clapton was so drunk during the 70's he leaned on George Terry a lot and George never let him down. George was a tremendous player and was introduced to Clapton before 461 Ocean Blvd. he was "THE" studio musician out of Miami and worked on "Grease" soundtrack plus anyone else that was in Miami recording at Criteria Studio. EC was lucky have him for many years.

  • Any dislike is subject to repeated torture ! :)

  • could of used some sustain on the solo. i guess he couldnt switch the leslie off.

i think the other guy had better lead tone thou he overplayed a bit.

  • marracas are in the way

  • Jimmy page is so overrated

  • @SeaHorseGypsy he is the god of guitar playing. like to see you solo to stairway to heaven

  • @DeepSnowBand funny, that's one i can't listen to, due to overexposure when young by dumb fm radio.

  • @DeepSnowBand funny, that's one i can't listen to, due to overexposure when young by dumb fm radio.

  • @DeepSnowBand that solos actually really easy and univentive, people who worship guitarists like you do are falling into these stupid popular music traps of mythology set by rollingstone magazine. love clapton and page for their music not their media cast image

  • @rabclotheslinesaga i sound like such a pretentious dick

  • @DeepSnowBand you need to see eric clapton playing in The Dirty Mac, he shreds like no other playing yer blues with john lennon. Plus its a great video to watch

  • @JacobLaTour yea hes sick with the dirty mac, especially yer blues, but some of their performances are with yoko and she adds an odd element to the music that most ppl dont like

  • @SeaHorseGypsy He pulled his share of the load, what have you done?

  • Comment removed

  • ever notice that clapton doesn't have much of a chin?

  • @roaringwaterbay yes, which is one reason he grew a beard.

  • Yvonne Elliman is so sexy...I saw her recently and she is still beautiful! Carl Radle is playing a first generation MusicMan Stingray with the white pickups...

  • BO SELECTA 1:04 1:45

  • @deadlychickenxop you have just made my day

  • Dose anyone know where i can get this gig, would love to get it for my dad for xmas, he's a huge clapton fan.

  • Nice Clip.

  • O.M.G ! Finally proof that EC is God. Because that's Mary Magdalene on tambourine.Unless Jesus Christ Superstar isn't a true story. That does it, I'm reborn.I'll never say that faith and God is Santa Clause and Easter Bunny type bullshit again. All Though there is still the issue of " I Don't Know How To Love Him". and I need to change my long time belief that my God has tits and a vagina.Luckily I still do not have to pray 'cause E.C ain't got Esp.Amen!

  • @pacexxx1964 It aint Mary Magdalene, but it is Marcella Detroit :-)

  • The good old days

  • Didn't George Harrison co-write this song?

  • @BluezGuitarz Yeah he did. There are a few verses from ringo too, CLapton said that in a interview arround here on youtube.

  • His song he can do with it what he damn well pleases. But I doubt he even remembers any of this performance being so hammered. It's amazing his sound and leads are still "Clapton".

  • hey battery dude... its called a live performance, and i would venture to say few there felt the desire to leave based on his trivializing the song. you call it a "track"

and i'm sure eric is sorry for not playing it up to your expectations at say... 11:38pm

on thursday night , 3/18/77 at the whistle. or it may be that you have the "inside" scoop on his plot to "trivialize" cream at the time! anyways i'm sure your smarter than me about such matters mr battery guy.

  • He's Trivialising one of the great Cream tracks, He plays it as if it were just another piece of throw-away crap.....

  • @batteryman6969 Boy, I would like to be able to "trivialise" some songs like clapton did here...

  • @batteryman6969 I agree. Clapton has turned an inherently sad song into a perky throwaway. The sadness and vulnerability of the original vocals are now replaced by a put-on aggression.

  • What year it is?. 1974?. I think Ivonnne Elliman is one of the backup singers, and Carl Radle on the bass

  • @rosadorevilla

This is 1976, and yes that's Yvonne Elliman.

  • @aleester 1977 actually :-)

  • @MrSlowhandmac

Ah thanks, that's right.... I stand corrected

  • Guy Pullen. His best mate from school. See his autobiography, Guy is mentioned in there a few times. Guy is retired now, but Eric often phoned the office when he was in town!

  • Total legend. Man this guy can play. I know his best mate too, I used to work with him!

  • @RobandRuthie1 who was his best friend then ??? and at what time?

  • forgot how much a genius this guy is

  • Sounds like he's using a phaser or something for the famous riff and solo?

  • @matrags

According to the pops in the video, Clapton was running his Strat through a Leslie organ speaker, which rotates, giving him that particular sound.

Jan Akerman also did that when he played with Paco De Lucia for Chanela (vid can be found on youtube)

  • GREAT to see "BLACKIE" in action...... Put's a BIGGGGGG ASS SMILE on my face :):):)

  • The live version from 1985 is much better than this. It's the one with Tim Renwick on it.

Nothing wrong with this at all but I prefer that one.

  • @herbal1971 Have to say that I agree, I think both Clapton's playing and singing is better on that version. But I mean, no artist can deliver a spot on perfect live performance every time, and this doesn't sound bad. Though I have to say that the singing is kinda dragging it down. Clapton's vocal abilities really improved over the years, and his early efforts just aren't as good as his later ones.

  • @kassemir

also keep in mind he was still a raging alcoholic... lol

  • @metart93 Well yeah, hadn't really thought about that, but he really did benefit from his sobriety, he sobered up and got better, both personally, but also as a musician.

  • whose the dude next to jamie oldaker?

  • @cegelis3

I believe it is Sergio Pastora.

  • This is a stellar performance, to say the least. Maybe the best version i've ever heard, and i have a few boots, folks. Wow!!! Clapton is God!!!

  • great verison badge good band

  • Nice to see "Blackie" being played in it's heyday-nice looking Strat created from

other Strats in Clapton's collection-I think this was auctioned a few years back (?)

  • @GalaxyHorse Yeah, sold for just under a million dollars.

  • The percussionist cracks me up. Gotta love the 70s.

Like this version but the 85 Hartford one is much better.

  • great song by slowhand clapton=god

  • wow. so sooo so sooooo good. george terry killed his solo too

  • Whatever happened to George Terry?

  • Very, very nice quality on this oft posted (and removed) video. I was cracking up when I saw "1974" ... Was definitely 1977, else George Terry's great solo would have been tough to do on a 1976 Musicman Stingray guitar!! hee hee

  • it was in 1977

  • first comment? this is a good performance, i really enjoy old clapton!

Thank you for posting this, its hard to find good quality video of these years
