If I want to teach Maths (using English) in Japan? Is there many English-speaking-Math teachers over there? Have you heard of any company hiring those that teach other subjects (Chem, Physics, ...), of course in English, in Japan?
Haha. The majority of the people emailing you have GOT to be teenagers. I'm 28 and when I was a teen I used to be just like that. Dreaming about all I could do.
I just stumbled onto some Jero music and interviews yesterday. He is very polite and speaks fluent Japanese. I'm sure his Japanese grandmother taught him some. His music is really good.
I'm just adding something in regard to artist visas for those wanting to go to Japan to make it big. 1) They are a 6 month to 1 year visa and I think a 3 year visa is also available. 2) You have to prove that you are an entertainer in your home country before they will issue the visa and you need to prove that you are going to have a regular income from your entertainment work for the start of your visa. The easiest way around that is to have a record/production/management company sponser. >>>
My advise as an artist is to go over on anything BUT an artist visa. Work as a teacher or in hospitality, anything really and use the three year working visa to it's full extent. Work your way up in the Japanese Entertainment industry the way you would back home and when you are making enough money to live off the entertainment work then change to either an artist visa or a self sponsored visa.
Oh, and don't limit your dream to "being famous". The Japanese entertainment industry has a lot of work. If your an actor then try modeling as well, try writing, try working at an agency and learn how the behind the scenes stuff works. If your a musician work in promotion, at a record company, in a music store, management, writing for TV commercials. DEFINITELY work as a session player if you play an instrument and even try working as a music instrument teacher.
Keep in mind that the Japanese entertainment market is centred in Tokyo and there are a lot of people out there that want to live the same dream as you. If you want to entertain to be famous it probably wont happen, however the population density will allow you to make a living without actually being famous (relative anonymity is gold btw). So if you are serious about your craft you can do well but don't expect to be mobbed in the streets.
Hey man, listening to the critique of dream chasing was a good subject to talk about, especially about going to Japan. Traveling to a different country is a big deal. So hearing about what can really be achieved isn't something to put down people's hopes, but rather help strengthen their knowledge on the opportunities. You did a fantastic job on laying it out for people. :)
so, im hoping to teach english (Cliche, i know) in rural japan.
i can speak very BASIC japanese, and i can identify a few written japanese words, i have also studdied Japanese customs and had a japanese friend of mine tutor me in some subtlties of japanese culture.
i have no problem with bowing but my japanese is awkward, but im working on it.
how long do you reckon i'd last?
also, i have blue eyes but brown hair, with tattoos... in case that might factor in somewhere
Haha I love this video, it totally needed to be said. Its awesome that you do all of these FAQ's as a resource to people interested in Japan, but there are too many people out there who lack any initiative in pursuing there "dream" to come to Japan. I'm arriving on the 31st of this month to teach for two years because I did the research. I cant wait to start getting these questions myself haha...ugh.
Personally I tend to wanna stay away from the spotlight.
I actually wanted to do some teaching over there (and I have been researching) not like my dream or anything but it's something I like. Are there programs (aside from JET) that can help me out (I hear NOVA is defunct now, does Aeon count, or am I way off).
yeah aeon is pretty much the same as other eikaiwas. you can also check out ecc, gaba, and many many others. check daves esl cafe or gaijin pot as well.
unrested: The shooting for the next film I'm going to make is gonna be in Tokyo in the fall. But, I have several other great ideas, that have good potential.
Dc: well, yeah I love aki hoshino at the baseball games. But, sometimes she can get a little too loud sometimes.. Oto ga ookii!
so be it your dream can easily be made a reality. i implore to fight for your tourist visa....and remember pack a can of decent beans as they do not sell baked beans here.
You give em an inch and they take a foot. haha. Sorry you have to put up with it but you gotta realize there are a lot of idiots and twelve year olds on here. dont let it discourage you, your vids are great.
You know I don't think this ppl will come to Japan with a behavior like that. You have to do everything by your own if they ask you to rest at your home imagine about the job getting money in Japan etc etc
this is a phenomenon i never expected to encounter when i started this channel 2 years ago.
honestly some people blow my mind with some questions they ask. i try to be as open minded and have a no-dumb-question policy...but 30 faqs later i have reached some limits lol.
Take it easy Scott, hahaha people can be annoying sometimes, but I'm sure that most of people in youtube is thinking seriously about getting a job or live in Japan ^_^
i want people to do that, but they need to know i am only an english teacher. i cannot make them a movie star or musician. also i am mostly only talking about people who do no research and just ask me to tell them things they could just google.
no worries. feel free to pm me too with questions like this lol. but seriously if you have that much certification you are pretty set for getting a job. still, i would book some interviews, and let them know you are headed to japan on so and so date. once there interview in person and your visa can be flipped over apon being hired. at worse you just visited japan!! how bad can that be?!
I agree, do research! Research Research, Research!
I wish to be a freelance journalist for an English language newspaper as well as an ALT in Japan. I never cease trying to find more information. I have begun to study at least 1 if not up to 5 hours a day of Japanese because I know I must be fluent in not only speaking but reading and writing Japanese.
I wouldn't be much of a journalist if I wasn't willing to put in the research hours. ^_^
but you would be surprised how people watch one vid on here and either ask me a question that i have already answered in my labeled FAQs or ask something they could have googled and found out in seconds rather than wait for an e-mail.
i probably get asked 4-5 times a week. what is the exchange rate and what is the temperature. its insane lol.
I know when I found you on Youtube, I went through most of your videos. Doing so takes time (and by the way was fun) but I really can't stand the idea of people being so unmotivated to do research themselves that they pass off the work or expect all work to be done for them by someone else.
If it is your dream don't leave it in another's hands ^_^
the strangest thing is how many people have the idea that all japanese speak fluent english on a daily basis, and that, of course, they will make an exception for them not knowing japanese because they soooooo talented.
That is strange. Just because I was taught French doesn't mean I have fluency in it. If I went to Quebec, even if I was talented if I can't speak the language of majority then I'm sort of a fish out of water and I'm going to be eaten, talented or not by those who can speak the language and have talent.
It's also just common courtesy to make an effort to learn the language. It shows respect.
with my job i teach from my own lessons i create during prep time. still some places, such as english conversation schools, require to follow almost verbatim from books.
How do you decide what to teach them? Or is that something you just figure out with time? I'm a little nervous for when I go I won't be sure one where to start
oh dont worry usually most schools will tell you what themes they have for each month. i.e. greetings, weather, emotions etc. also if you feel too worried loads of bookstores here have books made for teaching english to kids if you need some help when you first get started. also if you are teaching as a ALT in jhs no teacher will just leave you hanging.
Oh thats good. What kind of a work load can I expect? I researched one place and they said you have about 30 hours a week so just curious from your own experience. Thanks for all the help man, love your vids
hey i live in Japan too, but will you do my homework for me? also please tell me the current exchange rate. also, teach me to play guitar. also instruct me on getting me an acting gig? hurry up.
ahha. hey i dig this video, because it is true people have high expectations from people simply because they are vlogging.
sure just fax the homework over. ill finish it while recording my next instructional guitar video/ gaijin guru guide to googling worlds most easily googled things.
the power of vlogging makes us omnipotent you didnt know?!! lol.
i would be more than happy to show you around. actually you should come when busankevin and the rest of the group have monthly mega nerd youtube parties.
That's pretty amazing. I'm surprised you are able to actually continue these videos while doing your job over there. You should do a tour of your favorite places on your free time.

Boy... I'm glad I don't get people asking me about how to learn Japanese or do their homework.
