There's no doubt Ray must have been joking. Like Kerry NEEDED to learn another instrument. The guy already played over a half dozen instruments!

No, I think there's some friction between Kerry and Ray. To me, it looks like Ray is irritated by (what he must perceive as) Kerry's false modesty. If you look up the video 'Gentle Giant 2' where they're playing Funny Ways, Kerry stops the song for a tuning problem and Ray seems kind of miffed there, too.

It's interesting to watch because of how different they are. Kerry is trained and a perfectionist, carefully adjusting his mics with each transition, and Ray has more of a 'home-grown' style.

there's been a time in which a national tv could broadcast a half a hour reportage on a progressive rock band that was playing all but commercial music. This happended quite a lot in the '70 on the italian tv (Rai). During the first half of that decade GG, along with VDGG, genesis et al. were topping the italian charts. Big difference from now, eh?
