  • I really admire the kid's perseverance who is playing the mrithankam to keep up with her singing.

  • I like it. sounds good...

  • Is it Carnatic music or Jesus Christ Rhyme? Very funny, we enjoyed.

  • @Bushrraff What is "Jesus Christ Rhyme"?

  • @SalvableRuin Something like ba ba blacksheep have you any wool? Yes sir yes sir 3bags full! :))

  • @Bushrraff Lol, what does that have to do with Jesus Christ??

  • grt job......... i know how tough is to learn n excel carnatic music....... appreciate Michelle's work, n she has loads of hard work to do in case of her voice n accent modulation ...... its not easy but not impossible . all the best.....

  • nice, feels nice to see our culture flow beyond boundaries

  • somebody who's mother tongue is tonal.... understanding Indian languages itself would be tough. !!!! great attempt... but i guess she needs more practice.... before she takes up other krithis...

  • nice...................

  • Wonderful -- really enjoyed --- inspiration for me and my family.

  • great effort..

  • I praise her for being able to sing so confidently on a stage and even being recorded. I'm sure this is a good start. As for the critics... I believe the fact is she doesn't sound Indian at all, her voice production and the pronunciation are clearly non Indian and this is a great obstacle if you want to sing Indian music, whoever you are and wherever you come from. I guess she's more concentrated on singing the thing than doing it properly, but hey, she's a beginner, and she can improve!!

  • parrotmania and ppadmana, i'm sure you're among those folks who go to kutcheris for the sarees, jewels, jasmine, scent and all the "show" rather than for the music. Try and start thinking honestly, for a change!

  • mymrhyde, you don't seem to be a very good reader. In my previous post, I told Michelle to simply ignore people commenting on her attire etc. Wearing a saree or jewels does not matter - what matters is just an honesty in presentation. In other words, you and I actually agree with each other.

  • ppadmana, i'm sorry i guess i misread and clearly, misspoke too. we both have the same points to say.

  • and btw, i realised, i actually meant to address the user with id 'parrotmania' and addressed u instead. my bad.

  • 'flamenfire and parrotmania' somehow got twisted into 'parrotmania and ppadmana'. it's about time folks had simpler id's on youtube! ;). sorry, btw.

  • Hey Michelle..congrats, your simple, honest singing kicked ass! I don't think even the "Gods" (if at all) would care what you wear while you sing as long as you sing well. It's good to acknowledge criticism, but ignore these pretentious, self-proclaimed 'culture cops'. They are just trying to sound smart here...Ask them to sing and post their video if they had the balls!

  • congrats michelle, your simple honest singing kicked ass! ignore folks who randomly comment on stuff like what you should wear , etc. They are just trying to sound smart here. As long as you sing honestly, I (and most other normal people) wouldn't care what you wear. And even the "GODS"(if at all) to whom these songs are 'dedicated' wouldn't, I'm sure!

  • ppadmana, i do not agree with you.....carnatic music is sung for the gods which is why it is important to wear traditional indian garb..

  • If carnatic music is sung solely for the gods, then why don't all violinists renounce their profession? After all, veena, and not violin is the only traditional instrument in Hindu musicology (Goddess Saraswathi is seen with a veena and not a violin right?). Basically you need to protest in every kutcheri that guitar Prasanna performs. After all, he wears a jeans and uses an electric guitar, what according to you would be a "lewd" instrument for a carnatic concert.

    Try to grow up, pleeease.

  • the objective of all kirtan, carnatic music is TO PLEASE BHAGWAAN SRIHARI, SRIMAHAVISNU, SRIKRSNA. All other objectives are PURE BOGUS.

This statement is done in Vedas and Puranas by PUREST DEVOTEES OF SRIHARI.

THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE. TRUTH IS SIMPLE.

  • hey i do agree with u...... how ever we need to appreciate the fact that this lady has an interest in our culture n its not easy to learn carnatic vocal... i specify vocal.... sooo i now request u to grow up plz .... keep urself in place of her n try learn some western form of music that too vocal.... u would know the pain..

  • yes, this ignorance is appalling! her appreciation of carnatic music should be well applauded! all the best michelle and keep singing!

  • her range is good!

  • knucklehead bozo parrotmania, how about a little encouragement and sensitivity, it usually transcends cultural divide. i think michelle look great.

  • excuse me and sorry to say this but this is not a national anthem.....and please carnatic music is offended when you do not pronounce the words correctly..learn that first before going on stage

  • I think she's doing a really good job for not being south indian let alone not indian at all.

  • Looks like you simply want to show that you are the odd man out. This is ragam Shankarabharanam, which all of Muthuswami Dikshitar's Nottu Sawarams were composed in. Clearly, its not Dikshitar's fault for composing a song in that same ragam 150 years before India's National Anthem was composed! And BTW, how can "carnatic music" be offended? Carnatic music is not a person.

  • BTW 99% of your audience does not care about whether you wear a saree or not. Good job again! Ignore the 1%. They are totally ignorant about carnatic music and what it stands for.

  • I agree. My grandpa would say that people like parrotmania would have found fault with evan purandara dasa :).

  • Good show Michelle! This is one of the Nottu swarams of Dikshitar, he composed these songs when he was influenced by Western music being played by the British East India Company's Band in Manali, near Madras.

  • and maybe some more distance from the microphone ;)

  • to the vocal teacher...pls tell her to wear a sari for her next katcheri..whatever race she might be...thank you

  • well said
