i produce for top DJ's here in the UK,and i can tell you honestly no DJ i have ever came across in my 14 yrs in music industrya DJ who was a musician, dont get me wrong Qbert is amazing at what he does, but turntablism does not make him a musician, improvisation is really what ur thinking of in terms of random sounds, but then it wouldnt be sounds it would be notes (in a musical sense anyway) which decks cant do, except random pre recorded bits!!

DJ's dont put a classic record down and say they made that music, they use sections (breaks) from the record and incorporate it with other breaks from other records. DJ's are bringin back music that the younger generations have forgotten too (see DJ Shadow)

for one, i'm not talkin about dance music,i'm talking about turntablism like the video above.and secondly, i never said i was anything special.but i have been studying musicians like qbert for a long time. think, with a piano you press a key and plays a tone, with tables you move the record to play a tone,sound,or word. unlike a piano, you can choose any tone sound or word you want which makes the turntable alot more of a unique instrument than any other instrument out there

and the turntable was originally designed as a playback instrument, but most DJ decks out there are built to scratch with. they've been adapted into a musical instrument, just like the first drums were probably people banging rocks together.

DJ's dont put a classic record down and say they made that music, they use sections (breaks) from the record and incorporate it with other breaks from other records. DJ's are bringin back music that the younger generations have forgotten too (see DJ Shadow)

Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables and an audio mixer. The term was created in 1994 by DJ Supreme to describe the difference between a DJ who just plays records, and one who actually performs, by touching and moving the records to manipulate sound.

i have to agree with Duvmunch, as much as Qbert is an amazin dj and performer,he is not a musician by any means! simple fact is:a turntable is a playback device, sure mixing2records together&scratching adds new elements,thats is all well and good but they are STILL pre-record musical pieces produced by by someone
else! but its typical, a dj takin the credit as usual

dj is the person who manipulate the sample or the sound on the records .. but it just like other instrument , playin guitar or piano .. just play the sound that the instrument produce . but for a dj dj is like a composer they produce their own music originally with the sample . not like other instrument just playin other ppl music .
