  • Does anybody know what kinds of swords these are? I am writing a paper for a class I'm taking and I can't seem to tell if they are smallswords, rapiers, or sabers.

  • Ian McKellen. Gandalf the Grey. King Lear. Richard II, X-Men ... he can do it all. Just as great a hero as a villain.

  • This is one of my favorite versions. Its the non musical one but I love the musical one as well. But aside from the films this has to be my favorite one. Anthony portrays Percy like how I read him to be in the book. <3

  • How come Magneto didn't just suck the sword out of his hand?

  • "Oh, the English and their STUPID sense of fair play!"

    I love that line!!

  • I LOVE this movie; shows what buffoons the French were! For all their talk the French sank to new levels of bloodshed and depravity. Thank God for the English Channel and that Great Britain eventually saw the demise of the Corsican!!

  • @fairgirl7

This story really doesn´t have anything to do with Napoleon, you know...

  • @fairgirl7 True! But the outcome of the violence and depravity of the French revolution was the rise of the Corsican; an ego so big that actually no body could contain the monster!

  • @fairgirl7 The sons of those kind of frenchs became nazis.

  • Does anyone know the boots Percival is wearing in this scene? Or the name that the boots might be called?

  • If you think Ian McKellen is a strong acter in this you should watch him play McBeth.

  • Gandalf before he became a wizard!!

  • great duel! this is the first fencing duel i ever saw, and as a result i have been a fencer ever since!

  • "Oh the English and their stupid sense of fair play."

Love that quote! Love the movie!

  • Looks good for the screen, against a real fencer not good!!!

  • Anyone else think Chauvelin is slightly reminiscent of Jackie Chan or Lou Diamond Phillips at 2:00?

  • Why does Marguerite look so nervous? I mean, her man is practically kicking Chauvelin all around the room! I love Percy.

  • @Lammy4ever7 Well at least she isn't screaming and running around like a chicken with her head cut off!

  • @Lammy4ever7 because she loves him and is worried that he's going to get hurt just when they finally understand one another

  • but I Dith-PIITHE the Thcarlet Puh-puh-puh-PUM-pernickle!

  • Percy is so cool.

  • It's Magneto!!!

  • Back from the good old days when an actor had to be able to do more than just act emo and look like a sullen douchebag all the time. (Edward Cullen I'm looking at you.)

  • Having read the book, the actor in question was very true to the role.

  • Did you just refer to the character as an actor?

To be honest, RPattz actually HATES Twilight. He's just doing it for the fat stacks of cash.

  • I love this scene, my favorite fencing scene in a movie :D

... but then I lost my heart to Anthony Andrew's Percy many years ago, so that may be why <3

  • Nobody says "Sink me!" as well as Miss Bunny Wigglesworth from Zorro, the Gay Blade. (Not a porno flick, but a hilarious movie if you've got a wacko sense of humor.) It stars George Hamilton from the 70's or so.

  • Best sword fight/duel in the history of film.

  • Actually, Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone in the mark of Zorro is much better. You can always tell how well someone fights by watching their footwork. Check it out.

  • aww I love anthony andrews!

  • Sink Me! This is a bloody good movie dont you think so what? I was in mist of tying thy cravat! xD

  • I am not super schooled on fencing but I believe Andrews form and stance were reasonably good. It appeared he had some more experience than just a specialist coach after taking the part.

  • Sink me ..That was rather good What

  • Lol Percy's pants look so uncomfortable.

  • (laugh) Chauvelin got totally squished! I love the way Percy snippes off all of his buttons!

  • One of my favorite movie scenes of ALL TIME!!

  • *snrk* love this scene :D love this MOVIE. first saw it in World Civ back in high school. now i have this and a collector's edition of the original book (still need the others tho)

one thing i just gotta say: Chauvelin, you got SCHOOLED! hah! :P and oh my yes, Anthony Andrews... yum. never mind that it came out 2 years before i was even born- the man is flippin fine! XD

  • I remember we saw this when I was a senior in high school. I'll be damned if everybody didn't go around shouting "Sink Me" for a month.

  • ha ha we just watched it at my school and that's become our class catchphrase!

  • Why didn't magneto use his x-men powers to bend persi sword causing it to go into persi's gut?

  • lol

  • Why didn't Gandalf use his magic to melt Percy's sword and then stab him with his staff?

  • Gandalf hadn´t graduated from Istari College and gotten his wizard diploma just yet, you see.

  • Yes, knowing Maximilien Robespierre, Chauvelin most likely would have been killed for his failure.

  • does anyone have a full length upload of this movie? i love this movie so much...

they seek him here, there seek him there

those frenchies seek him everywhere...a classic

  • i was amazed when i saw this. Ian McKellan's so young!

This is seriously my favorite movie EVER!!

my director has been talking about a swordfight and i hope we can do this show- partly because it's just amazing, and partly because it's a hilarious swordfight!

  • A masterpiece...

  • I almost had a heart attack when I heard those guns, but I wasn't surprised when he came back. He's a genius after all.

  • Sink me! When he came back I was overjoyed!!! That elusive Scarlet Pimpernel!!! ROFL

  • I was too and laughed at Chauvelin's face!

  • "Ohhh, the English and their STUPID sense of faul play!"

    ROFLMAO

  • "Fair play", you mean.

I believe Chauvelin would rather Percy had finished him off rather than have to face the wrath of Robespierre. Letting the Scarlet Pimpernel slip through his fingers will probably get him the guillotine.

  • Ian looks so bloody young! I know this was about 25 years ago but he doesn't look over 30 here. Does anyone know any shops which sell this(I know theres amazon but I have a weird phobia about that)?

  • That would depend a bit on where in the world you are... I came across this movie at my local post office.

  • I got mine from Amazon, and no problem. Just make sure it's your region and buy it new -- just to be on the safe side.

  • Own this movie, and I love it! It acutually has a real plot, unlike so many movies now, and really holds your intrest. They also did a good job at sticking to what was going on in the location at the time period the movie is set in

  • omfg, i seriously LOVE this movie.

  • SINK ME!

  • Dude! That's intense! It's been ages since I've seen this movie. I NEED to own it. Anthony is SO perfect for this role, and Sir Ian...well, it's Sir Ian, isn't it?! 'nuff said! :P

  • Every time i see this part i can't help but think that the frenchy is thinking "Sir Percy.... stop undressing me....

  • yes yes the pants are great armand the brother yes he is hot but after i saw him in victor/victoria... i mean he was a real jerk in that anyway i always thought anthony andrews was extremely hot in this but i myself have always loved Sir Antony/tony dewhurst myself he is my favourite. if you do not know which one is he is like third in command after andrew i guess you could say

  • LMAO @ 1:52!!!

But I LOVE THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL!

  • I do wonder...how the hell did they duel without those super-tight pants ripping?

  • They probably just used stretchy fabric.

  • Awesome! As a fencer, I greatly enjoyed watching this scene. Thanks very much!

  • ...and more importantly, Scarlet Pimpernel is one of the best stories ever written!

  • My favorite scene. I love it.

  • not Armand.

  • Chauvelin's first name is Paul.

  • I never read "Eldorado" but I think I´ve heard somewhere that Chauvelin´s name in the book is Armand.

    Anyone care to confirm that?

  • In the books, his name is Armand. They probably changed it in the movie so people wouldn't get him mixed up with the other Armand.

  • Many thanks for the clarification. :o) I really should read that book... but none of them seem to be in print around here these days.

  • No Prob! :) I love having a chance to exibit my useless info. My fam is tired of it. I don't know where you live, but you can get Eldorado from Amazon, I'm pretty sure. If not, blakeneymanor website has all the books on e-book format. I highly recomend all of them!

  • Yes. in the books he is Armad. However, the film writers believed this was to confusing since Margeriet's brother was also Armand. So they changed his name to Paul.

  • ah... Ian Mc Kellen... ;-)

  • -giggles-

"Oh, the English, and their *stupid* sense of fair play!"

  • Anthony Andrews was much better than Robert Grant

  • Thanks for posting this! Do you have a clip that happens just beofre this? "Fire Damn you fire!" thats my favorite.

  • Those pants are enchanting.

  • Great acting, great fight overall great

  • How did Chauvelin survive for so long with fighting like THAT?! It was worth it to see Ian McKellen, though...and Armand's kinda cute...

  • "And Armands kind cute" Its true. he is. haha.

  • no it's not. he's not "kinda cute", he is EXTREMELY hot! lol

and i love men dressed like this.

  • I certainly hope you mean Armand CHAUVELIN. Because I don't find Margot's brother to be attractive at all. Awsome scene

  • no, i think her brother's pretty cute. just not your type i guess.

  • Yeah, I guess I've just never been able to forgive him for what he did in Eldorado (the book). AA is definately my type, though.

  • oh, Anthony is too handsom for words.

  • Ian is great in this film!

  • I love this film! Anothny is just a shexi beast in all of it! Dam i wish men wore trousers lik that theses days!

  • yay!!! Thank you. I love this scene. Anthony and Ian do a really good job. thank you for posting this!!

  • I have seen the great Anthony Andrews. He is one of the most amazing actors ever, and yes those pants are very wonderful :)

  • I heartily agree to all your comments regarding AA and the pants... ;o)

  • Thanks SO MUCH for posting these vids, cheekysmiley! This is my absolute favorite movie! And---Anthony in those pants is quite wonderful, I must agree ;-)

  • Holy crap, I can't get over Anthony Andrews in those pants! *drools*
