that is an absolute pearler of a ride by rodd he let him go right at the perfect time but take no credits away from efficient its a shame alot of the racing public havent seen more of him he is one of the best modern day stayers
So you think wont last 2 miles , it'll be shocking, precedence, or one of the Loyd williams stayers that'll be victorious. Great Horse but maybe next year when he matures abit more. I liken him to Efficient, had he run in the 2006 Melbourne Cup he would have lost to zipping or the 2 Japanese horses , best thing they did was rest him up for the following year.. Boy did i party in 2007 when he got up in the cup. I think same should apply to So You Think < why rush
He didn't get the win on this day. But I don't think I've ever seen Purple Moon in a race anywhere in the world that he hasn't given 110% of everything within himself to give. Here we are 3 years later, well into the 2010 racing season. And Purple Moon is still grinding out fantastic finishes at 7yrs.old. Already a 2nd place finish in the 2010 Yorkshire Cup. And 3rd place finishes in the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup, and the 2010 Goodwood Cup. One could never question the heart that Purple Moon has.
Racing commentators are always going on about how many great sprinters that Australia produces. I agree with that 110%. But take a look at some of these 2 mile Melbourne Cup races. Looks to me like Australia is loaded up with some pretty damn good distance horses, too. JMO.
@robinaboy at the time when Miles said that you would notice that Efficient was being badly held up for a run, which could quite easily have been interpreted as "feeling the pinch".
I wouldn't want to listen to anybody else than Greg Miles call a race, he is the best we have and probably the best we ever will.
@theplancabinet So you think wont last 2 miles , it'll be shocking, precedence, or one of the Loyd williams stayers that'll be victorious. Great Horse but maybe next year when he matures abit more. @BNESuperHeavyweiGHT Rush now because he'll get 61 kilos next year, he's well weighted compared to the rest of the field and he's in the form of his life. why not?
It's a pity that Efficient missed last years cup! But in my opinion, they brought him back much too late for his prep. He had 1 run and I think it was in like August (I could be wrong) at like 1200M. He finished really well and it was a great sign! But that was pretty much the only run he had before the lead up to the cup. He had no race fitness, and I think that might be why he got injured.
I followed this horse for so long, it was so fitting he won this race. I watched him at caulfield the year before where he got 4th in the cup, to see him take this was fantastic.
what a run by efficient! similar to the way he came back from the 06 victorian derby when he was stuck on the rails and then came out of nowhere to storm home! shame he was injured for last year's cup
Ipca, efficient ran a final 600m split in the 06 vrc derby faster than dance hero's 600m split in the 1200m sallinger the same day. name any foreign nag that can finish a staying event in the low 33's as a 3yo. Do to this as a 4yo was most impressive. Yes I was there, yes i backed efficient, but it was a huge win. Not rating this above the diva's three peat, but the individual win was more impressive than any of her single victories.
tiggerish no idea. Efficient was trying to keep up Rodd held him up so he could get right to the outside. These horses didnt go past him because he wasnt travelling well. Smart race tactics by Rodd and Lloyd Williams and it worked
Without mentioning the 03 Irish Champion Stakes won by High Chaparral in a thrilling race where the top 5 finishers were Groupe 1 winners and were separeted by only 3 lengths.
I thought Dolhin Joe had a great run too. Considering the $44 chance was pretty much 3rd or 4th the whole way, and ended up finishing 5th ahead of many horses at shorter odds. Saying that though, there are no favourites in the Melbourne cup, you have to take into account there are 24 horses with a legitimate chance at winning. GO EFFICIENT. BTW, yates has a massive chance this year.
I still cant believe Purple Moon got chinned. The fucking rain they got a few days previous lost it for him. As for the fuckin ass that came from the next parish to beat him....Cuuuuuunt
I love this race!! Purple Moon did run a fantastic race, no doubt and actually Mahler did a great job of holding third. But that late run by Efficient was just extraordinary. Out of so many horses with a good chance............it does suck to have the second best. I feel your pain. Been there many times.
Ah sure I cant complain,I won a lot on Purple Moon twice over the summer. I won €1900 when he won a Goodwood over the Summer & over €5,000 when he won the Ebor Handicap @ York. Hopefully there will be other days with him. It probably hurt more coz I talked a lot of people in to backing him for the Melbourne Cup. He would have pissed up if they didnt get the deluge a few days previous. Anyway tanx for the response.
That's a lot of scratch my friend!! Great handicapping! On page three of my favorites you'll see the 2005 breeders cup distaff. My best pic ever.....Pleasant Home. I won $8,000 American dollars that day. I wish I had that day over again. I almost drained my account for that horse, settled for a great day but it could have been so much better. Cheers!!
Jesus he was a lucky winner!!!!! How sweet was that. I only bet on American racing @ the breeders cup. Ouija Board did me 2 nice turns over there. I had 1 bet over there last year...English Channel. They wouldnt hear of defeat for Dylan Thomas but I knew he wouldn't act on a tight track & when the ground went soft. I was on @ 7/1 e/w. What do u fancy in the Kentuckey Derby?
I'm going to have to get with you on that. LOL!! I've been in Europe for the past three months but going home next week. I have been looking at the field though. I have to say I'm intrigued by Court Vision. Much studying to do yet though. Big Brown is quite a horse but gate to wire is nearly impossible in the derby. I will make a point to let you know who I like though. Oh yeah, I won on Ouiji Board too,..........good racing my man......Dog
Right now I'm thinking way off the pace for the derby. That's why Court Vision is so intriguing for me. He stands at 20-1 so I've read right now, and he can only go lower I think. So anything above 10-1 might be a great bet come derby day. I'll keep you posted as we draw near race day. You can watch his races on you tube just by punching in his name with horse racing. I sure like him.
Well I think the race might just set up that way. If Big Brown runs on Derby day that is. Right now I'm thinking the speed, (which is quality speed) will make the serious mistake of just going too quick. There will be a positioning battle and they'll go a bit too quick. Anything below :48 will be quick in the Derby and I think they'll go :46 and change. This will be great for Court Vision, If his jockey can just not run outside the whole race that is. He's gonna blow up down the stretch!!
Another thing. If he can manage some sort of cool inside trip, even while passing a few down the backstretch.......keep it cool around the final turn while accelerating then somehow find his gap at the top of the stretch,......LOOK OUT!! This horse is capable of extreme acceleration. It's going to take some luck, and some real good riding to win this race. But Court Vision is capable of all these things to set him up just right. I can't wait 'till Derby day!!
Any horse with an extraordinarily long sustained sprint, has greater lung capacity and heart.
For such horses, the longer the race, the more obvious the sprint, the more obvious the stamina.
And Efficient really lifts its legs when others are plodding.
I actually think he can win the next two Melbourne Cups, and quickly equal Makybe Diva's record. A record we thought may never be broken, might go much quicker than we think.
as for reading tips and sure things for the 2008 cup . i can see why there are no poor bookies !!!!! but good luck with all your tips and punting for next year's cup everyone
I have just watched the replay several times, needless to say I selected efficient and backed him . After reading all the comments you all have valid points, greg miles did give a wrong opinion but efficient did seem to be struggling around the home turn until he got to the outside. If you all remember he won the derby in a similar fashion .I would say that M Rodd rode him to perfection and followed williams and rogersons instructions to the letter . what a ride!!!!!! come on 2008 .
As much as I love Greg Miles (he is the best caller going around, and he is the best to call the Cup since the late and great Bill Collins) I would LOVE to see some international callers come down and call the race for their respective countries.
Imagine Jim McGrath, Tom Durkin, Darren Flindell and Darren Tyquin, as well as racecallers for other languages, calling the Melbourne Cup. That would be phenomenal.
Right from the back he came from.He didnt do too well in the 2006 Melbourne Cup because he ad the blinkers on.Off they came and he won like a champion.
If you look at the 2005 Melbourne Cup, you'll see he got 3rd, on an unsuitable track.
If you type in "Sir James Fletcher Stakes" you'll see him beating some of the best horses in NZ after only racing once in 2 years and coming back from serious tendon injuries and a pulled shoulder.
If he gets into the Cup next year with a track thats Dead or better, you'll see a true superstar in action :D
No I didnt and I had no reason too, the horse had done nothing since the Derby and he ran poorly in the Turnbull Stk. I backed Purple Moon, he had form and I got my money back because my account allowed for 2nd place refund, so Im not talking thru my pocket. Efficient had the worse form of any winner going into the race since Tawriffic won in '89. If you backed him, it was all ass and thats it, the horse showed no signs of improvement during the spring. You were lucky, stupid.
you are right that he showed no form but i just thought he was set for the cup and if he showed anywher near as much form as he did a season ago he would win. i thought you may have had the second horse
Im not fussed about not getting the winner, Im used to it! haha! Im just sick of hearing how everyone thinks the horse was a sure thing, he wasnt. And all 22 of these horses were set for this race, its a crock when ppl used that as a reason for it winning. Having said that, if he goes around next year and barring inj he will, you wont get even half that price no matter what form he's in.
Sure mate I also got the trifecta straight out for $100 to make over a million. I also picked all 10 winners on the day.
I love the comment with 600 to go efficient feels the pinch. Greg miles you dick stick to describing the race and not giving your opinion on what is happening, your opinion means nothing.
Dickhead, efficient was hard ridden along way out and responded. Greg Miles is one of the best callers around and his opinion means alot more than yours, stupid.
Walking my ass, the rider was niggling him from the 800 and it took him 400 to start making ground and if you think that was the worst call ever, then you havent seen much.
I didn't say my opinion means anything but correct me if I'm wrong a race caller is suppost to describe what he sees in the race and not to make predictions, that's what the form experts are for so your boyfriend greg miles stuffed up
He didnt stuff up you idiot nr did he make a prediction, he saw a horse being urged along, along way from home and called it correctly. Even the jockey said he had to push the horse along to get into the race. Open your eyes and watch the race properly you dill
you are full of shit. the horse wasn't pushed along it was never under any pressure nor was it feeling the pinch it pulled out and away it went the caller got it wrong he should feel embarrassed
You dummy, watch and listen to the race properly and you might learn something. Black Tom and On A Jeune were both behind Efficient the entire race. When he called Efficient "feeling the pinch" both those horses had gone past him you dummy. The horse had to ridden along just to keep up at that stage. The caller didnt get it wrong, you didnt take any notice of how the horse or the others around it were going. Think I know whos full of shit
You're right! If you have a look, Efficient is the widest runner on the track when they hit the straight, he had to come from 2 wide, to about 10 wide. Sounds like something you would have to do when you're feeling a bit of pinch.
Listen to the call from 2.00 you dope, you'll hear the call has several runners behind Efficient, the next call at the 1000m the same horses had gone past him. You did notice the shot at the top of the straight? The horse is in front of about 4 runners, now check where the horse was at the 1200m. The horse went backwards for sometime before picking himself up again. Open your eyes stupid
Dude? Are you talking to me? Cause I'm pretty sure I just AGREED with you! Don't call me stupid mate. I simply said that he had to go from the inside of the track to the very outside to make it home. AGREEING with the fact that you said he WAS under the pinch.
Aiden O'Brien, who trained Mahler, said he was definitely coming back next year for another crack. He called this the greatest race in the world because of the incredible atmosphere.
And when the (arguably)greatest trainer in the world says something like that about a race, its definitely something special.
Sat outside the leader ( Tungsten Strike ) who ended up finishing last and battled on well for 3rd. Hes a talented little horse and if hes ridden well in next years cup , he'll be the one to beat
Thank god for Youtube. In the UK you don't always see the big foreign races such as the US triple crown or the Melbourne Cup except perhaps the last couple of furlongs on Channel 4 racing program. I knew the result and that Purple Moon was going to get beat, but what a race and what a finish by Efficient. Great stuff.
I live in Ohio and I go to Louisville for our Derby every year. I caught this race late last night on TVG, around midnight local. Knowing little to nothing before it started, as a huge race fan and punter, I absolutely loved the spectacle that this race was .... one word ... Efficient ... a beauty.

as for reading tips and sure things for the 2008 cup . i can see why there are no poor bookies !!!!! but good luck with all your tips and punting for next year's cup everyone

My favourite qoute "He's mowing them down!"
You go Efficient!
Right from the back he came from.He didnt do too well in the 2006 Melbourne Cup because he ad the blinkers on.Off they came and he won like a champion.
howzathumdinger 4 years ago
Didnt run in the 2006 Melbourne Cup lol.
He won the VRC Derby a few days previous to it and was an early nominated favorite, but the connections decided not to risk running him.
That looks to have been one of the best decisions they've ever made.
Oh, and props to Claire Lindop and Lisa Cropp. First ever Female riders to ride in a Melbourne Cup and they both did well.
Mogsthamisfit101 4 years ago
Oh?I thought he did!Lol..dunno hey.Thanks for the update!haha
I know! They did really good for the first females hey!!
Thanks for correcting me!haha
howzathumdinger 4 years ago
Haha no worries mate.
Yupp.
And Efficient, Mahler and Sculptor are all looking to have another go next year.
Not too sure about the others....
Mogsthamisfit101 4 years ago
Effients great and all but I dont think he could win it again. What about you?
howzathumdinger 4 years ago
Yeah, he probably wont.
Although with his pedigree you never know.
Well if he starts, Xcellent, a NZer.
Mogsthamisfit101 4 years ago
I didnt have any money on efficient , though i had him in my trifecta.
Was kicking myself after the race.
I still think he would be a 3 times better horse with a better trainer.
He has the potential to be a very very very good horse.
sdahowr 4 years ago
Mr Racecaller should not make comments, just call it as is,just like "Kingston Town can't win." re Cox plate call by the 'accurate One'.
Tallimbatom 4 years ago
Oh it's funny how ppl are now saying how they backed Effcient and won alot of money.
hellinco 4 years ago
so you never backed it
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
efficient you beauty, been with you all the way mate, first the derby, now the cup, $23. Muahahahaha.
cussernaut 4 years ago
i had the winner i faught he was home from the 1200
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
Of course you did, you and 10 million other people who backed a horse in the race
tigerrish 4 years ago
you could see he was home he was walking the whole way. then when let down came down the outside with a wet sail
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
You idiot, there were 22 horses in the race, how you can say he was home so far out is the stupidest thing Ive heard
But then again you bagged Greg Miles, that says enough about you and your intelligence level.
tigerrish 4 years ago
your a fucking idiot you did`nt back it i did so shut the fuck up you fucking moron. he was not feeling the pinch at the 600 there is noway
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
No I didnt and I had no reason too, the horse had done nothing since the Derby and he ran poorly in the Turnbull Stk. I backed Purple Moon, he had form and I got my money back because my account allowed for 2nd place refund, so Im not talking thru my pocket. Efficient had the worse form of any winner going into the race since Tawriffic won in '89. If you backed him, it was all ass and thats it, the horse showed no signs of improvement during the spring. You were lucky, stupid.
tigerrish 4 years ago
you are right that he showed no form but i just thought he was set for the cup and if he showed anywher near as much form as he did a season ago he would win. i thought you may have had the second horse
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
Im not fussed about not getting the winner, Im used to it! haha! Im just sick of hearing how everyone thinks the horse was a sure thing, he wasnt. And all 22 of these horses were set for this race, its a crock when ppl used that as a reason for it winning. Having said that, if he goes around next year and barring inj he will, you wont get even half that price no matter what form he's in.
tigerrish 4 years ago
yeah thats true. good luck next year
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
And if he was such a certainty, why was he a 6/1 fav a year ago, but started at 20/1?
Since when has poor form been the guide to finding certainties?
tigerrish 4 years ago
GO EFFICINT
iLOVEzahida 4 years ago
i betted efficent
$5 to $112 is very nice!!!
spending money soon
jimmyl93 4 years ago
Sure mate I also got the trifecta straight out for $100 to make over a million. I also picked all 10 winners on the day.
I love the comment with 600 to go efficient feels the pinch. Greg miles you dick stick to describing the race and not giving your opinion on what is happening, your opinion means nothing.
allinjim123 4 years ago
sorry 2 dissapoint u but i did pick efficent and 2bh dont really see the point in lying about it
jimmyl93 4 years ago
Dickhead, efficient was hard ridden along way out and responded. Greg Miles is one of the best callers around and his opinion means alot more than yours, stupid.
tigerrish 4 years ago
how was he hard ridden idiot you could see he was walking ay 1200 the 600 he was home that was the worst call ever
imrightyourwrongok 4 years ago
Walking my ass, the rider was niggling him from the 800 and it took him 400 to start making ground and if you think that was the worst call ever, then you havent seen much.
tigerrish 4 years ago
I didn't say my opinion means anything but correct me if I'm wrong a race caller is suppost to describe what he sees in the race and not to make predictions, that's what the form experts are for so your boyfriend greg miles stuffed up
allinjim123 3 years ago
He didnt stuff up you idiot nr did he make a prediction, he saw a horse being urged along, along way from home and called it correctly. Even the jockey said he had to push the horse along to get into the race. Open your eyes and watch the race properly you dill
tigerrish 3 years ago
you are full of shit. the horse wasn't pushed along it was never under any pressure nor was it feeling the pinch it pulled out and away it went the caller got it wrong he should feel embarrassed
imrightyourwrongok 3 years ago
You dummy, watch and listen to the race properly and you might learn something. Black Tom and On A Jeune were both behind Efficient the entire race. When he called Efficient "feeling the pinch" both those horses had gone past him you dummy. The horse had to ridden along just to keep up at that stage. The caller didnt get it wrong, you didnt take any notice of how the horse or the others around it were going. Think I know whos full of shit
tigerrish 3 years ago
You're right! If you have a look, Efficient is the widest runner on the track when they hit the straight, he had to come from 2 wide, to about 10 wide. Sounds like something you would have to do when you're feeling a bit of pinch.
tyz16 3 years ago
he must have alot of stanima
to do that and would have to of had some speed too to over take all the horses he came from near last
all4pharlap 3 years ago
yeah.. because efficient is a stayer thats why he's got stamina!!!
kulaps0406 2 years ago
Listen to the call from 2.00 you dope, you'll hear the call has several runners behind Efficient, the next call at the 1000m the same horses had gone past him. You did notice the shot at the top of the straight? The horse is in front of about 4 runners, now check where the horse was at the 1200m. The horse went backwards for sometime before picking himself up again. Open your eyes stupid
tigerrish 3 years ago
Dude? Are you talking to me? Cause I'm pretty sure I just AGREED with you! Don't call me stupid mate. I simply said that he had to go from the inside of the track to the very outside to make it home. AGREEING with the fact that you said he WAS under the pinch.
tyz16 3 years ago
Apologies dude, thought you were saying the opposite.
tigerrish 3 years ago
that was intense!

Aiden O'Brien, who trained Mahler, said he was definitely coming back next year for another crack. He called this the greatest race in the world because of the incredible atmosphere.
And when the (arguably)greatest trainer in the world says something like that about a race, its definitely something special.
Mogsthamisfit101 4 years ago
I thought Mahlers run was incredible.
Sat outside the leader ( Tungsten Strike ) who ended up finishing last and battled on well for 3rd. Hes a talented little horse and if hes ridden well in next years cup , he'll be the one to beat
sdahowr 4 years ago
Agreed.
Man, if they manage to clear up EI next year, 2008 is gonna have one hell of a cup!
Mogsthamisfit101 4 years ago
Thank god for Youtube. In the UK you don't always see the big foreign races such as the US triple crown or the Melbourne Cup except perhaps the last couple of furlongs on Channel 4 racing program. I knew the result and that Purple Moon was going to get beat, but what a race and what a finish by Efficient. Great stuff.

$50 on Efficient ... what can i say!!?!?!? muhahahhaha

I live in Ohio and I go to Louisville for our Derby every year. I caught this race late last night on TVG, around midnight local. Knowing little to nothing before it started, as a huge race fan and punter, I absolutely loved the spectacle that this race was .... one word ... Efficient ... a beauty.
