You don't have to point a lightbeam in an exact angle to those to get the light back. Just the same with the reflectors on the Moon. They are not just flat mirrors. @jhhwingnut If You also get the "trouble" to take a look at some sites describing Hubble, You'll find that it is actually impossible to get any reasonably high ressolution pictures of the lunar landers on the Moon. One reason is it doesn't magnify enough. Another is, at the comparatively short distance between the Moon and Hubble, the Hubbles speed will make it impossible for the very long exposure time needed for the most magnifying camera. It would just be blurry.

The engine was throttled back, the exhausts very quickly spread out in the vacuum (not much hit the ground with any considerably force), and the engine was completely shut off several feet above the ground to prevent "bouncing up" again. Therefore not ALL dust was blown away.

You know, it wasn't designed primary for that shot, but to send moving pictures of the landscape and the astronaut's work...

By 1969, Russians had their own satellites in space and were observing the whole program.
