I remember having to pull teeth to get this video. But videos for Foxboro 97 and Basel 93 came out because of it, and now I see anyone can watch all of them in full any time they want. I hope was the point... pry these things out of the hands of the elite to give them to the poor. Every once and a while I'll search "Dublin 90" to see if that one has made it out yet.
he started smoking to affect his voice. it was intentional. he liked the sound it gave him. But as he said, abuse of anything is dumb, so props to him for recognizing its potential to be a negative thing. its made his face age though, and i miss his face like it used to be.
This song is beautiful and Bono looks beautiful while singing it, he's one of the very very few who can make smoking look almost kind of sexy...I'd rather see him smoke a cigar though, for some reason I've decided that they are classier than cigarettes. Glad he cut back, never understood these singers and their smoking.
It definately stimulated U2 to create the intoxicating mood of this song, like smoking still does to so many great songs and their writers on this planet. ( Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Joe Jackson, Paul Weller, Manu Chao, The Artic Monkeys to name just a very few) Songs that will live forever, even if the composers have died of heart attacks or cancer (or not). So please, respect the value of tabacco in certain aspects of life, at least in this song.
I agree. Although there is an assault on smoking these days for some reason.....smoking does add a mystique, an ambiance if you will to music, food, life, etc....
it's not des best version of this song,but it's still one of my favourites.they should play a few songs on their 360 tour.I think it's 10 years ago when they played songs of the pop album.
i can keep listening this song for 10 times a day and never get tireod of it, I do not understand many of others fan who have stopped at the joshua tree album considering the best ever did.
This live song is Absolutely Fabulous!!!! but the live performence in the kuip in rotterdam 1997 is better!!
greetings from a u2 fan;-)

I wish Terry Lawless wasn't hidden during the rehearsal too. You can definitely hear the keyboards in this song, they're very pronounced.

@SEBBARU
Lawless didn't work with them this early.

He has smoked since the late 80's but says he has cut back a lot.

@popbonobuzzbaby Most of Bono's voice problems were caused by a dust allergy, as himself declares.
