I grew up with Simple Minds, and not until recently I realize how influenced I have been by Derek's bass playing... it's just there in the subconscious lodged there by listening to their albums over and over...
At their most creative peak. Yes you can pick up the Can and Eno influences and maybe Kraftwerk still."Sons And Fascination" is the finest early 80's rock lp of all time.
I was looking for this track because this and Sound in 70 Cities was not included on the CD of Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call which I had.
I reckon that this track sounds more 'Empires and Dancish'. I like it, especially that baseline. The bass playing on this album and New Gold Dream is sublime.
Ye its the bass line, shamanic in the purest form, heard a couple of tracks from there forth coming album on a scottish radio show, couple of cover songs..they shouldnt release it, its terrible, Rockin in the free world, was paining to listen to a band you loved murder a great song.Obviously not creative anymore so its safe to do covers, the cover cd is a bonus cd right enough, even the song they played of the cd was that bad i cant even remember the track,Sry Lads..Sad but true.
Yeah johnnyblunder you are right to be sad that those brilliant musicians left the band even before I was born :D I know I am :D
I am looking forward to buying their new album, Grafitti Soul. I won't buy the covers CD. They didn't learn from the last cover album being pointless. The album itself will be brill though. I've listened to all the samples and they sound just like Simple Minds should!
What a great track! Nifty 2/4 bars tucked in all through the melody bits, but it all sounds fantastically natural and hypnotically draws you in. In general, hypnotic early Minds makes you realize how underexploited time-signatures are in most dance music.
This was an awesome period for the Simple Minds. I really like the new wave/new romantic/experimental/funk of the early days.
Life In A Day. Real to Reel Cacophony. Empires and Dance. Sister Feeling Call. Sons and Fascinations. New Gold Dream. Sparkle In the Rain. These all are awesome albums.
I have a live audio recording of this song that has more lyrics and, IMO, a better overall arrangement. I got it from Napster roughly seven years ago. I don't know its origin. Maybe it was on the B side of a single. I'll share it once I take the time to learn how to post content to YouTube.
rsp196607 what you have is the b side of the sweat in bullet 12". The B side also featured a live recording of in trance as mission & both songs were taken from a concert at the hammersmith odeon in 1981
when I bought the THEME box in which this song is featured (must be the first one) I listened to this song like 20 times in a row...completely hypnotized...what a bass line...
Aaah, the great trance sounds of Derek Forbes! He should have had a hell of a career with that talent, and yet he faded into oblivion. Why? Unfair!
