Sorry, ben e. king wasn't the original lead singer for the drifters. i distinctly clyde mcphatter when i was tiny. true love,( maybe), sixty minute man, and white christmas. the drifters, coasters (formerly the robins) had changing lead singers according to the politics of royalties and contract disputes of which there were many back in the day. groups used to get all mashed up and it was hard to know who was singing with whom. i think there was also a johnny moore that sang lead.

This was the first song Ben E. King recorded AFTER he left the Drifters in 1960. 1961 was a GREAT year for King. He also recorded Stand By Me which made him a household name. But the music industry was hearing foot steps behind them. THE MOTOWN SOUND was starting to make its bid as a driving force in R&B.
