  • It's a member of the agave family I believe.

  • It would help if ...

We were told how the plant-name is spelled, as Ray's accent leaves me clueless. ...

It would also help if ...

We were told WHICH desert and the range/locations where this (mystery) plant grows ... hmmm ? ...

As it stands, All I know is that there is a plant that looks like an Agave or a century plant or like a Yucca or any of several other (American) desert plants. So glad that Ray has a clue but ... his little "show-and-tell" really showed me little and told me ?

  • @phrankus2009 Ray is in Southern AZ near the Dragoon Mts - Cochise Stronghold (near where I live). This is an excerpt from the video series Arizona Desert, which can be found on RitchiePowell's page. The Sotol plant is similar to an agave or yucca plant, but I don't believe it is classified in either family.

  • @phrankus2009 this plant is called Sotol and it grows in Mexico and Texas

  • i thinky he was smoking weed !!!

  • Great Now All i Need is Patients

  • this is not desert this is florest

  • incredible, smoke from the 3rd set of spins, 10 spins and his coal is ready...

  • 0:49 i´d say we found dracula , or he´s a wild rodent himself look at his teeth

call discovery we found the missing link

  • What a tossa gloves? Why not just book a hotel room if your that soft!

  • @ac6murray Book a hotel room... in the desert?

Are you actually that idiotic, please say no

  • If you're gonna carry a knife, a glove, why not bring a match too?

  • "When you find yourself in an unexpected desert survival situation, its a good idea to carry gloves."

    lol

  • @hempheadfor20 Sounds like we'd better carry gloves even if we don't think an unexpected survival situation might occur! I know it's inane to say this, but Micheal Jackson had this aspect of wilderness survival DOWN! ;D

  • Ray was very young...

  • Now you start burning those forest and run for your life.

  • That was great to watch !

    Thanks ! :o)

  • few seconds my ass that was like 15....

  • Les Stroud is a survivor not this Ray Mears or Bear Grylls!

    check it out on youtube!

  • Did anyone else notice his HUGE uni brow?

  • Stop comparing ray to the likes of Bear Grylls. Aswell as having a stupid name. it was reported in a newspaper that bear flies back to a 5 star hotel every night after filming, yet claims in his show that he slept in the wild.

  • @eat4peace

Yeah because that is so plausible. Being able to fly out every night, with endless amounts of cash, in the middle of some rain forest, desert, or outback which doesn't even have houses, let alone hotels. Yet you believe the newspapers when they say he stays in a hotel? You must be incredibly gullible and believe absolutely anything the newspapers say. Fact is, all of this fake stuff about Bear was because he used a SAFE lava bridge to use as an example rather than a real one. Fk off.

  • has any one else noticed hes huge ass monobrowl?

  • 4 people are fat kids plaiyng PC all day long ..

  • Which are the best woods to use in the uk?

  • Dude... Teeth. Seriously. Get those choppers fixed.

  • Hello there, want you clips on TV? Send us you funny, hillarious, scary, dangerous, stunts, or crazy clips. We'll pitch them to the TV networks and if they see what they like, you get paid. Its Free and fun!

  • beast mode

  • Ray is sooooooo pale.

  • @solobackpacking Typical englishman, we dont get much sun.

  • @DreamsCatcher101

Good to hear, I thought perhaps he is suffering from chronic illness.

  • If I was to try that, and I'm in the Northeast of America, would I need to use "dead standing" wood ?

  • wouldn't it be a better tip than carrying a pair of gloves, to carry a lighter?

  • Once I got snake bitten, but then I chopped the head off the snake, gutted it and ate it. I won.

  • @EcoFascist the snake probably wasnt in his prime or else he woulve ruin your shiiiet

  • Is he using the same wood for the drill and for the board?

  • Oldschool

  • Nice video Ray...good info. And as for you nighterjay. We can do watever we want with our language...you may have brought it here but when we kicked you colonials out we took the rights of the language too. Oh yea and your welcome for us braindead xenophobic morons saving your sorry ass from having to speak German. It is so amazing how ungrateful some people are. Are you sure your not French???

  • @donm7514

OOOOOOOHHHH!!! Burn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But remember the word Frenchman is a contradiction in terms.

  • Why do english guy always say resources like rezources :)

  • @ArtisanTony Thats the way english is- thats why.

  • @ArtisanTony Why do Americans make their own fucking words out of the Oxford ENGLISH dictionary.. Centre is the word you have bastardised into center. it's our language and you braindead xenophobic morons should respect that... That is why Ray Mears pronounces is words Has He does..

  • @nighterjay all I can say is LOL to that nonsense. It is our language now :)

  • @ArtisanTony Ok fair enough you can have our language. Please can we keep our oil off the north coast though? Please dont invent a reason to invade us to take our oil like you did in IRAQ...lol

  • @nighterjay and where on earth did the word 'centre' originate? Surely not Old French from Latin 'centrum'. No! And the English language. Was it not innundated with at least 10,000 new words at the point of the Norman conquest? Did you know that the Normans were Vikings? Fascinating. The ancient Britons, according to emperor Claudius , in the second Roman invasion of these fair isles, were dark-haired, dark-looking peoples. That would make them Indo-European through Iberia. The road is long.

  • the old way is the hard way.

  • skillzz

  • lol, he almost stabbed himself

  • Curious to see what he would do if there was no dry wood around

  • He says its critical to always carry a pair of gloves with you..? How about carrying a Bic lighter? I bought several packs of the five pack Bic lighters and i keep two in all my back packs and cars and trucks. Don't be tempted to save a few cents and buy the cheapo disposable lighters with the clear plastic butane containers. They leak and if you store them for very long, especially in hot conditions like a auto glove box they will be empty when you need them. Spring for the quality Bic lighter!

  • how do you make a fire at home?

can you make fire with just any random ordinary sticks?

  • @XxSnowAngel not exactly, unless you are using the bow drill which doesnt take perfect combonation of wood. But with the hand drill method it takes perfect wood in order to make an ember.

  • Skip the adds!!!!!! 0:01

  • @buttayhahahaahahah

Bear Grylls probably doesnt wear them because thats what the tv executives at discovery channel told him to do, since it adds some kind of tension or looks cool. If he had a choice he'd probably wear them.

Having gloves when handling thorny plants isn't a matter of being brave or manly, it's about being smart.

  • finaly, he did it.... but how many minuts it tool to fire?

  • haha when he was spinning it it went well with the music it sounded ilke some dj scratch

  • @mw2pro79 this show isn't about what to do if you get parachuted into the wilderness with nothing, it's about being prepared, which btw is how you survive in these places. but mostly it's about the art of bushcraft

  • schools should teach kids how to make fires just in case they do get lost in the wilderness in the future.

  • @cafcwebbluke yea

  • and why did i not learn this in school?

  • lol thats boss!

  • wats up with the huge ass knife if anyone gets lossed they arent randomly going to carry a huge knife and gloves you should stop using suplies so your showsmake sense

  • @mw2pro79 actually, alot of peoplke carry knives especially if camping or soemthing

  • notice as he starts to drill he starts on an angle great man.

    @Razorx53

if you use the same type of wood as him and practice it is as eassy as 123!

  • wow thats awesome, but i bet it isnt as easy as mr mears makes it look

  • One of my life goals: start a fire with only wood.

  • if he has a pair of gloves why he does not have any lighter? LOL RAY MEAR!!!! SHIT SMEAR in pants~!!! LOL

  • if u had gloves and a knife im sure u would have some means of making fire xD

  • @Dakatt1 Wells said

  • Flame on!

  • wow thats pretty cool

  • None of the wood around where i live is dry enough to do this D:

  • dry it yourself! :)

  • then u dont live in the desert

  • fire with magnifying glass is easier

  • Rule number 9: Always carry a knife!

  • thats rule number 1

  • Wow! No more to say!

  • Nominate Ray for Prime Minister

  • he'll just knap some flint

  • Alot of Rays knowledge is learnt from tribal peoples who actually live in these conditions (and yes, a knife or machete is essential to their survival). Rays show is modelled on hunter/gatherer techniques is better suited to real bushmen and /or hunters.

Bears program is not so much about living in the wild, its about getting out of it as quickly as possible. Thats where these 2 differ. With Ray you could actually live in the bush. With Bear its about getting out as quickly as possible.

  • Never noticed before! Thanks for the info! Btw! I'm just messing around on here!

    Bye!

  • accually it would be retarded to go in the wild without a knife

and you can make "knives" from broken pieces of flint or other rocks

  • if your dumb enough to go into the bush without a knife would be a problem but everyone does take a knife so stop bitching about it.

  • Comment removed

  • What would Ray do without a knife? Well this ... watch?v=vPk28DiIWPU. Flint is by no means rare. It is formed from quartz, the second most abundant mineral on Earth. If he can't find flint then most types of chert will do the same job to a greater or lesser degree.

You can't knock Ray, he could survive in your world quite easily, I doubt you'd last very long in his

  • that is defanitly not the only way u could get caught in the wild

u could get lost on a hike (it happens all the time)

ur atv could break down in the deasert.

if ur rafting ur boat could flip

there is are endless possibilities of ways to get caught in the wild.

i strongly disagree with u "catalyst"

  • Under all these other circumstances you would be allowed to take a knife and matches and usually do. But there are controlled environments like getting on a plane. I was just curious. I like the idea of surviving in the wild, but lets just recognise that if we get lost hiking and have not taken a knife and flint, what is the solution....if there is one.

  • @Catalyst2 Depends on what you know and what you have to work with. A knife for cutting meat and veggies can be made from Elm or White Oak bark. Shape it with stones, soak it in water, rub it against a smooth rock to compress the fibers and dry it and give it another rub. For cutting wood a simple dischoidal flake of flint or chert works. I admit it's not as good as a steel knife but beats heck out of nothing.

  • @Catalyst2 You're obviously not from America, because here we are actually granted the freedom to carry knives. I'm not trying to say America is the best or anything, I'm just mentioning that because this is where Ray is at in this program. And there are many other circumstances where you could get caught in the wild. And of course if you didn't have a knife you could use a rock. What do you think the Natives did? You sir are a fucking moron.

  • @Dakatt1 dude u can buy it anywhere and its not rare it one of the most abundant things int he world u fucking dumbass

  • @buttayhahahaahahah You make no sense. Who said it was rare? Who said about buying it? And who's the dumbass?

  • @Catalyst2 You are so fucking stupid. First learn how to do this stuff with a knife and then learn to do it without one. Doesn't matter though, because you know nothing about survival techniques apart from sitting on your ass and posting bullshit comments.

  • @Catalyst2 He'd use flint.

  • I can make fire by getting someone I think is a twat, asking them to hold some dried twigs and pissing them off. Only takes a few words and they're fuming. Ah! I can feel the heat from here!!

  • i can make a fire with a magnifying glass flint and steel ferocerum hand drill bow drill fire saw ice condom

  • As far as the Mears/Grylls debate goes, if I was syuck in the middle of nowhere I would rather have Ray by my side. The Mears technique is slower but infinitely more comfortable. Grylls is a grab and run merchant!

  • wot kind of animal is plant?

  • well the plant is one of the most still animals in the wild!

studies show that most plants eat only water and food made by their cells. some plants don't move their whole lives! they are a truly reserved animal!

  • secondo me è facile farlo nel deserto.... con l'aria asciutta!!! nel bosco dopo una pioggia, con il legno che puoi trovare in giro, mmm..... voglio vederti... Bel video comunque....

  • What? We don't like anything but English on here please.

  • @Catalyst2

I think it's easy to do in the desert .... with the dry air! in the forest after a rain, with wood you can find around, mmm ..... I want to see ... Nice video anyway ....

  • I can make fire with a magninefine glass ^_^

Thats sorta good i guess eh ahhahaah?

    Its a start ;)

  • Never heard of this guy but I like him. Cool vids

  • you heard of Bear Grylls? Well Ray Mears was around before Bear was, Ray Mears is very popular on British TV, unlike Bear Ray talks about the place hes in and the tribes and culture etc... where as Bear is extreme and just wants to get out, so quite opposite both of them, i used to watch Ray Mears a lot but since Bear Grylls came out i was hooked on his show, still Ray is just as good, but not as extreme as Bear. Check out Bear if you aint heard of him, hes great.

  • I find the information that they give in these survival videos more important than whether or not they are being followed by some crew.

  • that plant probably makes an eccelent atlatl dart

  • you should have more tiner to start

  • bear grylls is an absolute fake. Ray mears, although a big fat panda, knows infinitely more about survival than that idiot.

  • survival man takes like 20 minutes

this guy takes like 30 seconds

    anybody know which is fake

  • desert climates are dry and wood contains less moisture. It would be easier to light a fire in arid regions, and sotol, as Ray says, is one of the easiest materials for friction fire in the world. Ray has an ideal situation here.

  • This does work, it did for me. You are correct in that it took much longer than he implied, but that said, I did this in Scotland with some random wood from some coniferous tree and lichen for tinder, rather than a specific wood in the desert and dry grass.

  • OK that was some cool ass shit right there!

That's about the fastest light I have ever seen from wood drills.

I used to live in the desert and those plants were everywhere.

Wish I had known back then cuz I'da been practising that game and amazing my friends all the time.

  • i like bear grylls better but you gotta admit this guys good !

  • Hmmm. Bear Grylls is no less than 5x cooler than this guy...maybe as much as 6 times...

  • fuck off

  • I want my mommy....

  • yes a zippo and by the way camp fire holds off wild animals most off em im not saying all

  • using matches would be easier though

  • wind can blow matches out then your screwed, bring a lighter

  • hahah saw that too

  • I just noticed that Ray Mears has some pretty vampire lookin teeth :/

  • 0:49 youre right! lol

  • @6NightStalker9 jjajajajajajajajajajajajajaa

  • Cool. I like the more efficient method of wrapping some string around the "drill bit" and having that string attached to a bow. You can move the "bow" back and forth and it turns the drill bit really fast, and it's easier to control

  • Ya it can go from +100 in the day to like 45 at night

  • it gets cold at night

  • really? i dont see how it would, guess that shows how much i know about deserts :P

  • to keep warm

  • Ray Mears! Please have my babies! lol :)

  • I have learnt so much from watching Ray on youtube, I wish I could thank him.

  • Where would he be without his trusty 21st 00 knife?

  • you obviously havent seen him make his own knife..

  • that's a nice beat

  • Don't forget to gather kindling and fuel before you start a fire, or you will look very silly making a fire and not having anything to build it up!

A cord of kindling and as many dry logs as you can drag will suffice. THEN you can prepare your fire.

  • Comment removed

  • The plant [called "desert spoon", "sotol" or "sereque"] can be used to make a spirit similar to the mezcal and tequila. =) pretty usefull!

  • aren't there any other types of plants which you can use to make fire or is that the only one?

  • really any deadwood mate. But some work a lot better than others.

  • theres hundreds, lots of the names i dont know how to spell. but yucka is a good one too.

  • guys the gloves thing was a tip. these plants grow like weeds where i live (arizona) and you can easily gather the stalks and strip them bare-handed

  • This is the best video I have ever seem on making fire using the drill method. But what is the name of the plant? Soto, Sota? Anyone who knows the name of the plant please post.

  • it's called a Sotol plant mate :)

  • how is he making it spin, simply with his hands?

  • yup

  • it is the hand drill method afterall.. But there's more to it then just rubbing your hands together, It's a rotational movement with your arms and wrists..

  • thanks allot mate for that advice.

  • Check out Cody Lundin's video here on youtube(abodudeman)

Cody is a Nationally acclaimed Survival Expert. Who specializes in the Arizona Desert.

  • omg...

    that was awesome

  • About the gloves thing, he said it was a tip due to them having thorns. If you were lost in the desert, you could do it without gloves, you would just get cut, or you could just use some fabric on you like you clothes, n well if you do not have clothes... I do not want to know why you got lost!

  • bear grills suck

    ray mears rules!

  • Bear is not too bad, but

    RAY MEARS IS THE BEST!!!

  • that guy is pro at that. really good video. thnxs taught me alot

  • that guy is fucking pro at handrilling.

  • good video thanks for other great tip ..

  • what knife is that?

  • it's he's own knife

  • A sharp one

  • yeah this makes sense because every survival kit has a pair of gloves, especially when your unprepared and lost in the deseret.

  • Gee guys, any bit of info you can pick up should be appreciated. Show some gratitude.

Better yet, join Boy Scouting and learn this stuff for real.

Get out from behind that computer and get some fresh air in the real world.

    I dare you!!!!

  • but when I am adviced to have gloves with me, I would also take a lighter and at least a magnifying glass, which would make things a lot easier.

  • lol, that is a good point! But again, Ray wouldn't only have "gloves" on his list when going into the desert!

Point being, he's saying almost all plants you touch may hurt you so protect them!

  • I wouldnt call this surviving in the desert it just misleads...you should give us tips of how to survive in the Sahara? thanks anyway Ray is great

  • the thing is ray tell you tips of when ure traveling thats why your gonna have your kit with u while as bear he teaches you how to survive if you get standard, they both teach the same thing but in different situations there both ace and interesting to watch

  • so basically what u are saying is, the one is smart, and the other one is stupid:)...I like Ray Mears because he seems very smart, and prepared..and smart people are normally prepared for the worst case scenario.

  • But when teaching others you should tell them how to be prepared, so what equipment to bring and whats best to use.
