If you want to target your chest most you should do it like it's done on the video here. If you want to target your lats you should place urself parrallel to the bench and put ur ass lower than your chest, now you can use your lats more.
If you feel burning and slightly pain, it meens its working and tearing muscle as you want it to be doing, also eat properly, 5a day, streaks, eggs, vegs, beans etc

if you're smaller than the average, I wouldn't try and get a wide back/shoulders. You'd just look like a dwarf.. good proportions are always better than blunt big proportions. But plain pushups should give you a good help if you're just looking for width. vary the distance between hands too. Trough years I barely did more than that and it always kept me with a wide (not monstruous) back. (perfect on the eyes of many ladies, and U know they're always right about that stuff... lol)

Wide grip (barbell) is more for back, close grip (dumbell) is more for chest.
