It is more affordable these days. And by the next 5-years it would be more affordable and more efficient. Hopefully a lot of people will be building their own homemade solar panels and can easily generate free alternative energy. Solar power for homes, I believe is the key for cleaner and greener future. tee element is known as thorium, and currently there are 3 times as much thorium than currently known uranium "stocks".

What I've learned having installed a system is:

- it's expensive

- it generates more than 4000 watts(enough to power many microwaves)

- it saves us more than $95 per month

- it reduces the CO2 given off by our family by 7 tons annually

- it will pay for itself in under 12 years...

Now in order to get oil, you must have (1) very complicated machinery to drill, then (2) transport the crude oil to a (3) processing plant. The refined oil must be (4) transported to large distribution areas, then (5) broken down into smaller amounts to be delivered to gasoline stations.

There are maps you can find on the net that show how much sun your area gets and will help you figure out how effective it will be where you are. Out East has more solar than the Southwest where there's more sun!! go figure.... Our system is still tied to the grid. A plus is we can sell back to our local utility at the going rate. Energy rates have gone up by 30% in our area in the last two years so our system is saving us much more than when we put it in.....

Photovoltaic implementation displaces peak power generation, i.e. natural gas turbines & diesel generators (dependent on localized grid peak generation technologies). Photovoltaics do not displace coal as coal combustion exclusivly used with baseload thermal power generation. To suggest that solar panels displace coal is somewhat irresponsible.

You are correct insofar as solar grid-tie systems without batteries are concerned. However, with grid-tie systems that have battery backup, some or all grid produced electricity can be forfeited. It all depends on one's system. A completely independant, non-grid-tie system completely eliminates the use of coal, nuclear, natural gas etc. etc.
