  • I respect your choice not to eat animals, but in ANY survival situation, both rural, urban, or even in a self reliant style of living... you have to eat meat to survive!!! Be them bugs, or not, you have to take life to live life in any survival situation.

  • I checked out the site for this book and it is pretty nice. I really appreciate what you're doing to teach children to love animals. I wish I had became vegan a lot earlier in life.

  • OMG, terrillcase, you're full of shit! Humans cannot digest meat properly, because our stomach acid is 20 times weaker than that of a carnivore and true omnivore. We have intestinal tract 10-11 times body length, because, unlike meat, plant foods decay slowly, so they can take their time to pass through the body. Meat rots inside your stomach and stays there for days. We are natural frugivores / herbivores. Our body is NOT anatomically designed to eat meat.

  • You, silly people, addicted to stinky meat, brainwashed by Governments and meat producing companies... Go do some real research - meat and other animal products will kill you before alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. I hate to see so much ignorance in this world! Billions of innocent animals are unnecessarily and sadistically tortured and slaughtered, so some ignorant and selfish humans can eat their dead corpse and secretions. Open your eyes and go vegan before you completely ruin this planet!

  • delicious animals!

  • how do you suggest getting all the other people to be vegan? like Mongolian herdsmen, the Maasi. any African tribe.

is it "safe" to call them horrible racist names? if vegans can call wesreners lazy, barbaric, savage corpse eaters the clearly we can bring back all those words. the vegans say no human should eat meat, no human can digest it. and people in general are not meat eaters. it is 2011, nobody should eat animals. not even Eskimos. they can grow cabbage in a green house right? or not?

  • @kuwaizair lol we are meant to eat meat and can digest it just fine.

  • @terrillcase according to vegan "science" we can't. and even dog and cat do wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better without it.

anyone who tells them it is not true, is a troll.

  • @kuwaizair ROFL meat is awesome. Nothing wrong with meat!

  • @kuwaizair Screw vegan biased science.

  • Great book. I wanted to stop eating meat at age 6. However, it was discouraged. It wasn't until I was 18 that I became vegan. If only we could all trust that compassionate instinct inside of us.

  • JESUS PROBALLY HATE MEAT YOU TERRORISTS!!! These damn people are another thing killing america exposing children to this shit if they ever did this to a kid of mine and turned them vegan i would be killing some dam vegans ... if i have a kid there getting a full steak dinner on there first day yeh thatll make em a super hero

  • factory farming is bad, I only consume animals that I raise my self.

  • Too early for kids NOT to eat meat. Let them develop their bodies first especially their brains because it requires a huge amount of nutrients and their young bodies aren't as efficient in obtaining essential body building nutrients as we adults have. If you are bothered on how animals are treated there are some meat dealers who are more "humane" if you prefer. Anyway meat has more nutrients per pound than veggies and kids can't eat much so don't force them... -peace

  • Children are so simple and beautiful. They haven't been perverted yet by our culture to think one way or the other. Most kids don't want to eat meat anymore once they know what happens to get it on their plate.

  • @justpeachiex I knew what meat was as a child and I still loved it. My kid will be a full meat eater!!! Bribery works :)

  • I find it hard to believe you don't eat animals, because you're full of bull.

  • @NinjaGhostScorpion I haven't eaten meat in almost 3 years & I'm perfectly healthy while my meat eating sister & mom r overweight. When I still ate meat I had high blood pressure. I WAS 15 & ON BLOOD PRESSURE MEDS! When I cut the crap out of my diet I no longer woke up w/ bp (blood pressure) headaches. I'm 21 now & feel better then I did when I was 14.

Heart disease & many cancers run in my family. I'm taking steps while I'm still young 2 avoid health problems.

  • STEAK 4 LIFE.

  • this is so beautiful.

  • **meat

    fail

  • u dont see meh making a book saying reasons why u should eat me do u? i think not.

  • @ShyIsBoyCrazy because there are no good reasons.

  • @bleedblue83 its part of the foodchain. unforunately.

  • From a moral perspective, vegetarianism is far too arbitrary a subject to be taught in schools. Most people do not think eating meat is wrong - fact. So why should we preach the opposite message to our kids at such a young age. And I don't buy that bullshit about kids choosing for themselves. Up until they hit double figures, they'll believe anything you tell them.

  • She's a teacher? Gosh. Seriously, I'd estimate her by her look to be younger than 16!

What I think could be the most complicated thing in explaining children Why We Don't Eat Animals is: Why DO so many people eat animals? THIS is something I find really hard to explain. "Almost everybody is evil and/or stupid." wouldn't be right, even though true to some degree...

  • @itekisan That's because vegans don't age as fast as meat eaters. I believe this because I've met several vegans who i thought were 22 and we're 40. I'd post pictures and you'd be surprised. This teacher who looks 16 is just icing on the cake to my theory.

  • How serious do the girls at 0:14 look? It's like a CSI: Pre School interigation

  • Amazing!! Great book, and a great message. My 8 year old has never had meat, and doesn't want to.

  • I've just ordered this book! I cant wait to get it. I'm a fairly new vegan. But not new to Vegetarianism.

My sister's kids are always asking why I don't eat meat. I never really want to tell them the horrors of animal cruelty because its hard to tell kids that there is suffering in the world, and even harder to tell them that they are contributing to it by eating it [even though it is not their fault].

But I think a book like this would help me explain to them better.

    Thanks!

  • I don't plan on having children anytime soon (I'm only 16!), but I need this book. ^_^

Little kids are always asking me why I don't eat anything in the kingdom animalia (though not in those words. xD), and I'm usually hesitant to say much, in case their parents through a fit. (Like some of the people on these comments...) It looks absolutely wonderful, well-written, drawn, and just great overall.

  • Beautiful book. Please download a vegan starter kit from our myspace page - myspace[DOT]com/veganfuture

  • @kababayan... what!?! lol... Tigers and Lions and Bears don't live in our cities and urban areas you know, there fine in their natural habits. PETA concern is for animals by their nature, thats their goal, but I don't see any evidence that they put "animals above humans"

  • These animals dont have souls or articulit thoughts. Eat them. God put them here to eat.

  • What utter rubbish, and definitely not what the Bible (I assume your a Christian) teaches. Also have you ever considered the paradox of believing in an ideology such as "God" but not that animals have souls.

  • Actually; YOU failed a long long time ago...

    pitty...

  • You don't seem too "articulit" [sic] yourself, dude.

  • What are your thoughts regarding the potential of synthetic meat? I.e. Meat cells, probably derived from cloned stock, grown in an artificial environment.

If the ethical well being of animals is removed as a problem does the consumption of meat become viable?

  • I don't see any problems with "lab meat" ethically, but it doesn't solve the health problems that meat is a huge contributor to e.g. heart conditions, blood pressure, links to cancer etc. If they could somehow solve those problems as well, then maybe I would have bacon once in a while ^_^

But it doesn't seem too natural :S

  • Thanks for your thoughts. :)

Especially as in the intervening time since I posed the question 'lab meat' is now consumer ready. First sales in scandinavia are due this year.

On the health problems. I'm sure that they can be fixed. after all, we could tailor grow the stuff to avoid the saturated fats and grow only lean meat if we desired. Although, this would naturally affect taste and texture.

on Natural, between adv hybrids and all out GM. What is?

    Take Care and RAmen!

  • Non organic farms use fertilizer as well. It's part of growing crops. If you are worried about harmful bacteria, you should stay away from meat. It is the easiest way to ingest toxic microorganisms, get "food poisoning," salmonella, bioaccumulated toxins, and e.coli just to name a few harmful things. It is reported that the majority of cows on American farms have leukemia. Think about what you're drinking and eating then!

  • sooooo... what about all these "tainted" vegtables going around. like the peanuts lettuce spinish tomatos i've seen rolling around the news.

And the majority of cows with leukemia are disgaurded opon inspection. The cows themselves are rather healthy. most often its the production plants that introduce the bacteria..typically from a lack of production linesatatization (same goes for the tainted veg's). Besides there are more "bugs" on your skin at this moment then are in a typical burger

  • Kabab., you are sadly mistaken and your arguments are juvenile and not thought out. You sound paranoid and ignorant.

    1. The organic food industry is booming, not being eaten away by insects ( they've "miraculously" found ways to grow vegetables the old-fashioned way. There wasn't ALWAYS pesticides, you know).

    2. If you want to talk about overpopulation, check out how many chickens live in an average factory-farm shed...about 30,000 to 100,000 and they are drugged to lay more and more eggs.

  • kff: Would you consider it much better that we lie to kids and pretend that animals are incapable of suffering, or that we should eat them because we always have?

  • I would rather have them consider that eating meat and causing suffering do not go hand in hand. What is going on here is lying to kids. Farmed animals live longer and better than they would in the wild. They are medicated well fed. They never want for anything. Animal welfare means alot to me because I eat meat.

  • It's terrifically telling that McDonalds would target kids with their vacuous crap. And that the milk industry is starting to target African Americans, a population mostly lactose intolerant. And that the food pyramid is created by food lobbyists. And also that you're favorite YouTube videos are violent and about video games.

Try to rent the movie "Earthlings" directed by Shaun Monsen. Its a great way to start to remove the veil from your eyes.

  • @wedonteatanimals vegan nazis like to tell you "all humans are lactose intollerant, aside from mother's milk". wow. how do those other cheese eaters do it and not die?

  • Comment removed

  • @kff That's just it kff. We vegans don't consider it "vacuous crap." Being vegan isn't some hobby for us. We consider it a very important lifestyle. We believe it would be very beneficial to society, environmentally and healthily, if everyone was vegan. We believe those, like you, are the ones who are ignorant of the benefits of such an important movement.

  • @kff I assume by your statement you don't think people should target kids with Christianity or any other religion either.

  • the little girl at the end is precious! is she yours?

  • no duh. But really I don't support PETA, I don't think they use the money well. I realize that cows don't live in the wild, but who says they can't just send them to good farms to live the rest of their happy lives???

  • well think about supply and demand. For instance, if no one wanted beef, there would be no reason to breed cows. If they want beef, then of course they'll kill the cows, and they will always stay overpopulated because they'll just stick another cow in there to replace the one that was eaten. Besides, think about how many soybeans are bred to give to cows - WAY more than are needed - and these could be given to other places that are really needed, like africa where people are starving. >:( wow.

  • and why is that??? I'm sure this is some stupid joke.

  • wow, what a wonderful creation :D This will influence people forever.

  • It's so simple. A balanced vegetarian diet is fine for people of all ages.

So, isn't eating meat is killing animals for your personal pleasure and convenience?

I don't know why it took me so long to realize this. I always knew a person could be healthy and strong as a vegetarian, I've seen it myself.

I don't blame anyone who eats meat, because that's how I was, I just hope they take the time to think about it rationally, without bias or silly arguments. 'Food chain'? What about free will?

  • This is an amazing clip!

I'm going to research where i can get the book. I work with kids myself =)

It's hard to be vegan in our violent world, and i respect and admire vegans who take action to spread our ideals and way of life. Thank you for your good work Ruby! Thank you =)

    Love and peace,

    Alex

  • Vegans do not use anything with animal products or by products in them. There are all animal free soaps toothpastes makeup etc...

  • You're obviously not a kid. :) Don't eat animals - the message is clear and simple. It's really not difficult unless we make it so. You are choosing to make it so. No one would be vegan if every made it so.

  • Obama must implement a tax on this immediately.

    Call its the "Greens tax"

    *runs*

  • Um, duh, that's all stuff vegans don't use. Good list.

  • <3 :]

  • Thank you! I think the best way to share (in a situation in which you think the guardians might be upset) is just to talk about why YOU choose veganism. No need for gory details...you can just stick to your love of animals, health, and the planet. Thanks!!!

  • This is beautiful. The images are amazing and so are the stories.

I always want to share Veganism with Children, but don't know how too approach them. (especially if parent's don't agree).

I wonder how you approach this without offending the guardians? :)

  • sooo buying this book for myself...i want to get it for my niece and nephew this summer, they'll be turning 1! but they have meat eating parents : (

  • do it anyway...a little info never hurt anyone. :) thank you for the support. enjoy!!!

  • where can i get this book?

  • Hi Angela! Thank you so much for your interest! You can order from Amazon, or RandomHouse, or NorthAtlantic Books. And after May 26, it will be in bookstores!

    Thanks!!!

    Ruby

  • This is so amazing... I babysit all the time and I am never able to convey my reasons for being vegan to the kids in the way that this book would. I can't wait to get a copy!! Rock on Ruby, your artwork is beautiful and your story is inspirational :)

  • This is awesome, I can't wait to get this book, I'm telling all my veggie moms.

  • Thank you Ruby! Love what you're doing.

  • So cool! I want this book!

  • I especially like what she says at 2:15 about how children often follow their moral instincts more easily than adults.

  • whoops, I meant at 1:20

  • Yeah!!! :)
