Break opens do have an advantage. About 4 inches of reduced length for the same length barrels and better handling. Flechette's in shotguns have not been that successful and not the best choice at closer ranges. Double slugs don't really add much to the capability of the gun.

I'd envision the perfect HD shotgun as being a double barrell with no auto safety, and ejectors... ultra quick reloads this way.

Why don't you care for over and unders? There are some things they are better than anything else at. There are some activities where the side by side has the advantage. There are times where a repeater has the advantage. It just depends. The over and under is sound and not obsolete and has some advantages.

Not sure I get the usefulness. Yes it's compact but 2 shots then your fumbleing to reload. I'd personally preffer a 5-8 shot pump gun woth a folding stock if length was an issue.

The gun patterns link most 18inch barreled shotguns. @ 25 yards using most 9-pellet, 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot you get about 5 + pellets on a regular Silhouette. Up to 15 yards the pattern is sweet for defense.

18 Inch, min barrel length in the U.S. for a shotgun. Best to cut at least .25 inch over. If you class 3 the gun you can go as short as you want!
