no improv requires thinking on the spot with next to no time at all. which requires highly efficent understanding of the fingerboard and extremely fast thinking in terms of ideas or musical devices to use.

writing your own music can take anywhere from a period of 5 minutes to however many years. I would doubt thinking of something in a period of however many years or months or whatever, is half as impressive as improvising right on the spot, right there.
