  • YUP!! i, myself, have two deaf foster kids! they too in the beginning, did not have any signs and lack of communication!! i still have both of them after ten years ..... ohh boy BIG difference in communication that they have today! yep it is very true LANGUAGE IS KEY, THAT IS ASL ... lately, i've been bubbling w an idea to meet w local rep to write down a bill!!! ... I m very glad that you will be foster parents to deaf kids!!! especially DEAF parents for DEAF foster kids!! kudos to you!

  • Great vid and awesome info!!! Thanks DR. G for helping spread the word about opposing AB 2072!!!!

  • WOW! Dr. G! Thanks for the wonderful video! I totally agree with you. ASL is the best method for Deaf children because though speech may work for some, it doesn't work for most. And once the children get behind, it may be too difficult to catch up! Why is it so necessary for everyone to be the same? Why must people think Deaf have to be like hearing? Why not just teach them with what we have-ASL! It's so SIMPLE! Anyway! Good video!

  • @brianaott EXACTLY, Brianna -- oralism is a gamble, and when the gamble doesn't work, the kids suffer, most for their entire lives. ASL IS so "simple"!

  • Wow, DrDonG, I agreed with you all the way!!

  • While the only issue was really communication barrier. Luckily I already had my language strongly developed at a young age so I could look at different sources. Now I work as a counsellor with the Deaf child, youth and families and I'm sadden to say that too many Deaf people fall through the cracks! It takes for the Deaf community to come together and WORK together to change that and it's not going to happen if we continue fight/act against eachother like this.

    Good vlog !

  • Jesus... What's going on with the negative comments?? I'm a canadian and DrDonGCSUS I have to tell you that I totally agree with your vlog! I grew up in the system myself and I have experienced endless communication barrier in foster homes, grouphomes, etc. I've moved 54 times in 12 years because of the communication barriers, when I was acting out as a young kid, they felt I was just problematic and they couldn't handle me so they just shift me to one place to another and another.

  • Shel, not quite. Read what he said to me. I am after all more culturally deaf than him, why should I trust him? I'd trust me more. Anyway, the bottom line isn't about all that either! It's about parental right and parents right to choice. I am done here. I was done a long time ago but I keep getting comments directed at me. I've said it and I'll say it again, we see things differently and that is ok. But, trust me, you guys are hurting the deaf community.

  • @gamaswanderings Candy/Gamas/Gina -- Being born into a Deaf family may have given you the foundation to be culturally Deaf, but this does not necessarily mean that YOU are culturally Deaf. When YOU have rejected those values of your Deaf forebears, you have lost the right to claim you are culturally Deaf -- instead, you have attempted to remake yourself as "culturally Hearing". Being culturally Deaf is a frame of mind, not an inherited condition, per se.

  • @DrDonGCSUS lol, you've really lost it. It doesn't matter what you say. Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am culturally deaf. I don't have to agree with you on certain issues. That's BS and you know it. Wow. Is that some scare tactic of yours and your friends into convincing people to agree with your views? All culturally deaf people have different stance on various issues related to deaf issues. Opposing some has no bearing on membership in deaf culture.

  • DonG, have you noticed that the bill was amended and the new wording is: American Sign Language (ASL), Total Communication, Cued Speech, and Listening and Spoken Language communication options

That's in place of "all communication options." Now you have ASL. How generous of them! Hope it's to your liking.

  • The world needs more people like you, you'll be an amazing role model for any child lucky enough to get you.

  • another clarification -- we must NOT confuse the old and failed "communication options" with NATURAL LANGUAGE ACQUISITION. We can't allow ourselves to fall into the age-old political trap of allowing ASL be "optional"... its inhumane and criminal to deprive any kid of a natural language -- the key to the world learning, to critical thinking, to basic personal success.... hearing people need Deaf people to realize how valuable language is.. They ar taking it for granted! Hope Im clear.

  • @ASLElla I think you're crystal clear, Ella!

  • excellent vlog, DrDonGCSUS! Thanks.

was reading some comments here. Clarification here -- AVT (auditory verbal therapy) is NOT "everyday conversation"! It's abnormal, weird, ridiculous method of forcing kids to use whatever residual hearing they have WITHOUT using their eyes or hands to express themselves. AGBell Academy certificates AVT specialists.

  • Oh, one more. I need to mention that I OPPOSE AB 2072. I have sent my letter. The bill need to be rewritten differently for a win-win situation.

  • A visual language such as ASL is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED and the rest shall follow is what I would like to see on the bill. We cannot say ASL is a requirement. This is not the way how our country works unfortunately. But we can play on words and mention something like "ASL is strongly recommended especially for newborns up to age 5."

  • From experience, when ASL is laid out on the table as one of the options, parents naturally gravitate towards the others in thinking they would normalize their child.

  • @drdongcsus...

What I would like to see is a statement that says a visual language is strongly encouraged and the rest shall follow. Parents would almost NEVER pick ASL or any visual mode of communication when they are shown oral education brochures of deaf kids talking.

  • @aslnikki The bill should not be biased in any way. Government should not be in the business of encouraging one method. All communication option is more balanced. Make sure information included in "all written communication option" includes ASL and why it is recommended.

  • @gamaswanderings Gamas/Candy.... the "options" system has NOT worked for Deaf kids. Why not make ASL more strongly encouraged and promoted, and see how that works? The Oralists and orally-inclined have had their turn and failed.... maybe it's time for a change and go to a method that is almost guaranteed to work! Whaddya say?

  • @DrDonGCSUS But that is not up to you guys to decide what works and what doesn't. The bill should be unbiased but includes ALL information. Options is just a list of all available resources which also includes ASL. I am seeing that you guys are playing with words here. All communication options includes ASL as well! What makes you think it doesn't? We don't have the right to make it a law where we say ASL works and the rest doesn't. It works but even CI w/ AVT works too.

  • @gamaswanderings The problem is, "communication" is not LANGUAGE. My dog can communicate with me, but she doesn't have language. English is a language. ASL is a language. With language, we have a foundation for communication. Signed English, Cued Speech, Oral, etc., are not languages. They are simply modalities, and these modalities, for the most part, have not worked.... why? Because the LANGUAGE FOUNDATION is not there! It call comes back to LANGUAGE FIRST! ASL does that!

  • @DrDonGCSUS Communication is not possible without language, although there are other lesser forms of communcations via gestures, etc. All in all, true communication is through language. Again, clearly we see differently and I still stand by what I say. You can believe what you like. As for Shel, this blame game is old. We are in control of OUR own destiny, we can control what we can the same goes for the hearings in controling their own destiny. System on the other hand...keep educating.

  • @DrDonGCSUS Anyway, I've said my piece and as much as I've tried to understand you guys, I just can't. Maybe because I don't work in the educational system and nor do I work with deaf people. The language in the bill is sufficient and is unbiased and that is the most important thing, in my opinion. Thank you for letting me contribute, albeit, differences in opinions.

  • @gamaswanderings Candy -- I think you've just hit the nail on the head -- you don't work in the educational system, and you don't work with Deaf people -- I do, on both counts. I, and others like me, have seen what happens as a result of bills like this, and we have to clean up the "mess". We have studied language acquisition, child development, etc. Why can't you trust us to know what is truly best for Deaf children, instead of opposing us at every turn?

  • @DrDonGCSUS And that makes you an expert? ;) You really don't get it do you? Don't use your experience as a benchmark. There are kids exposed to only ASL that are not doing well, same can be said for those that do well too. Same can be said for every options out there. Options means more than one. Options includes ASL but you guys don't want that. You guys want to dictate to the parents that they have to pick ASL first. That is where you're all wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • @gamaswanderings Candy -- I'm amazed. When some of us play the "not Deaf enough" card, you're one of the first to cry foul. But here you are, playing the same card? You may have been born into a Deaf family, but I suspect you have lost touch with your Deaf values. I would bet your parents value ASL more than you seem to. And again, just because the law SEEMS "unbiased" doesn't mean that it will be put into PrACTICE in an unbiased way. Like you say, THINK!

  • @gamaswanderings You're kidding, right, Candy? Playing the divisive Deaf card a week after accusing US of dividing the Deaf community? WOW. I'm sorry, but the hypocrisy of what you said boggles the mind.

  • @shelpotma1 , really that gamaswanderings is Candy!!! thank you for telling me that!!!

  • @gamaswanderings, whooopppeeeeeee!!! Now I found out who the heck you are!!!! Candy the one from blogger???? OMG! So what and who CARES that you think that you are MORE culturally Deaf than DonG !!!! Wow, that is so true color of you, CANDY from the blogger!!! I don't give a sh*t if you are more SMARTER than me! It is you that you are laughing hearing abused me! That means YOU DON'T CARE abt Deaf children who are LEFT BEHIND! You go talk to BERLIN WALL & worship hearing abuse us!

  • @gamaswanderings Candy, being Culturally Deaf isn't inherited, it is ingrained within your fiber and how you life your life.

  • @DBadvocate Exactly! It is ingrained within my fiber and it is HOW I LIVE my life. Thank you!

  • @DrDonGCSUS, I know this is an old argument, but Ella Mae Lentz made a similar point in her letter about AB 2072 and I thought it profound. What if hearing parents with hearing children were given the options of morse code, a bee dance, and flag signals, alongside spoken English. Wouldn't that be an insult to English? So it is with cued speech, etc. Real language is hardwired in the brain. All people deserve a real natural language from birth.

  • @gamaswanderings "It's not up to you guys to decide what works and what doesn't." Historically, It has NEVER been up to us Deaf because all the decisions have been made by Hearing people in power who thought, and still think, they know what is best for Deaf children. ASL, although already "included" in communications options, is often NOT actively encouraged,...to be continued...

  • @gamaswanderings... and there is a HEAVY bias in the medical and educational profession towards hearing and speaking . Hearing people are making decisions about Deaf people WITHOUT Deaf people's input. Black people during the Civil Rights movement have declared "Not about us without us." THAT is the whole point about fighting this bill, as well as ensuring that ASL is guaranteed to be provided to Deaf children.

  • @DrDonGCSUS I AGREE!

  • But what they do not know is that there ARE kids who do not thrive in oral education even with cochlear implants. I have seen successes (not mentioning socio-emotional issues here) and I have seen kids who are more visually oriented even though they were implanted at a such young age.

Options? Optimize ASL WITH options, sure! Thank you, DonG, for mentioning ASL as first and foremost and then the other methods can follow.

  • @aslnikki Exactly right, Nikki, in all your comments above.

  • Oh, crapola! My messages are reversed..... Well Start with "What I would like...." and then "From experience.." and finally "But what.."

  • My goodness, this certainly brought me back to when I was little where I always was told, "Oh, dear. It's nothing. Go on and play."

  • Excellent vlog but at the same time, it breaks my heart seeing how these Deaf children are not being nurtured in a language rich environment.

Congrats in becoming a foster parent! I know you will make a big difference in their lives that they will finally be immersed in an ASL environment.

ASL as a last resort for Deaf babies/children calls for crippling their language developmental stages. The window of opportunity occurs between ages 0-5 imposing a challenge to "catch up".

  • *standing ovation* *hands wave* ASL is NOT a fix it all after all the communicative options have failed, I agree. ASL should have been given to Deaf children from birth. It is NOT an option. It should be a requirement for ALL Deaf children from newborns on up.

    Well-said, Don!

  • @shelpotma1

    Agreed.

  • Yes... Very important, honset and good vlog! ASL is a must for the deaf children, they truly need to be taught the first thing ASAP. ASL is the key to a better education future for the Deaf children. Period! Again, Good vlog!

  • GOD VLOG! I was touched and cursed!

  • Do you have any petition to stop AB 2072?

  • I agree with you . ASL is very important because ASL help them to understand clear than oral.

  • i m with you all the way. That is very outrageous for hearing supermacists who thinks they know it all before us, Former Deaf children and our being deaf who knows more than them. This is a real big issue for all of Deaf babies/children's lives that are full of hate crime because we did not asking for having their Audism 's barrier communication. ASL is the answer before we can follow up to learn how to speak. It has nothing to do with our ears that they think we understand.. What a big joke!

  • What is AVT?

  • @podsaich

AVT <-- Auditory Verbal Therapy (Audiologists)

  • @allisonpeace no...not audiologist. AVT is a method used in every day conversation to improve listening and speaking skill. Nothing like speech therapy. It is NOT speech therapy that most of us experienced back then. Parents utilize AVT in their daily conversation and kids don't realize that AVT is in progress. It's very natural.

  • I agree 100% and this vlog really brings it home. It should be ASL first, and *anything else* is a backup. The reason it is reversed is audism. It is not understanding that ASL is a perfect, whole, natural language--something every child needs from the minute they are born.
