  • The music and lyrics, by Rodgers and Hammerstein, are exquisite; Mandy sings with passion, drama and beauty. I first heard his rendition of this song 25 years ago and it has lived with me ever since. This is what dreams are made of.....

  • its funny how i spaz out whenever i watch this video even on mute...thats how awesome and expressive mandy is when he sings <3 <3 <3

  • Mandy Patinkin is amazing. Absolutely amazing. It doesn't matter what he does - Criminal minds, Chicago Hope or just doing what he does best - singing. I love this man.

  • Gives me chills each time I listen...and watch. I love how he gets into the music!

  • Lovely singing. TY r for posting.

  • HIGHLY PRETENTIOUS ....WHAT'S WITH THE SQUATTING MANDYBUBBULA??

NICE VOICE... SHAOUDA HAVE BEEN A KANTOR... KIDDING. YOU'RE EXTRAORDINARY AND YOU DO, YES YOU DO MOVE TO TEARS ...

  • thank you tube for recommending this video to my list of videos i might like to watch ,you tube you got it just right David. WHAT A WONDERFUL VOICE

  • most beautiful version of this song even Mario Lanzo did not sing it like this

  • We had this beautiful song played at our wedding 25 years ago...........ty so much...xxxxxxxxxxx

  • I just sent this to a friend on her birthday. It was the first song I saved on my new computer in 2008 when I got it. Obviously still have it. I am a rock on guy. But this . . . was beautiful.

  • If I remember correctly this was a special made for tv. Along with Kiri Takanawa? from NZ. Just people singing the songs from the show in their various parts. I had never heard Mandy sing before. I have never heard this song sung so beautifully!, with so much feeling, & so easily. The man loved the song, felt the song, & it shows!! I was, & still am, amazed & in awe of the talent on show here. You may have gathered that I love this version, sung live without any tricks. Brilliant, class.

  • South Pacific is my favorite musical. There is one song that says children have to be taught to hate by 6 or 7 or 8. This is so true

  • He has one of the most beautiful voices in the world -- but LOL he looks like such a baby here, so very young!

  • This beautiful voice is younger than springtime!..

  • Zack galifanakis can sing amazingly. Win.

  • He went to South Shore High School in Chicago, my high school. Although he went there the same time I did, I did not know him. However, I did see him as Tony in an amateur production of West Side Story at the community center on the South Side and he was wonderful.

  • His voice is a miracle. Gotta love it.

  • there cannot be a better version. i am in love...

i play emile, enjoy singing some enchanted evening and this nearly was mine, and seeing this...

  • For a very long time, I thought Mandy P. was only an actor... boy, was I wrong. He has a beautiful voice & does a lovely job w/this song.

  • Totally not a musical theater advocate, but this is just sung so well. I love it. @_@

  • This was so beautifully done -- wow I think I starting crying almost two seconds into this one

  • Wow. If he sings this, then the next sound you'll hear is her lingerie dropping.

  • This must be Mandy, 25-30 years ago?

  • @itsmegp46 The album was recorded in 1986. So, you are quite right!

  • I have a lover, soon to be my husband, who is 25 years my junior. We see eye to eye so well, we almost can't believe it. But, we do. We truly are the man/girl of our dreams. There are so many songs that represent us, but this one really touches my heart. Even though we don't need any songs to rep us. It's nice to find one. Lovely.

  • Chills. This makes me want to rush to the theatre. Oh no, but wait, I know what is out there now, and I do not want to see it. I will just keep watching this Youtube video clip to remind me of what can be out there.

Instead of rushing to the theatre, I find myself rushing away. Some, not all, theatre has become as painful as watching Act II of City Ballet's Nutcracker. I feel like I have been on a plane too long.

  • Josh Radnor anyone?

  • Agree with everyone who says this is the most moving rendition of this song. So beautiful.

  • R&H and Mr. Patinkin is the American Musical Theatre at its best.

  • I lOVE this song. And him. But the only thing that I don't like about it is sometimes he has really awkward strange body language... other than that, flawless performance :).

  • @35jad

Yes, but he is not on the stage here as Cable. He is in the recording studio with a terrific orchestra and an intuitive conductor. He is "feeling it." In this day and age of theatrical excrement being a perfectly acceptable expectation of many, be thankful for Mr. Patinkin's heavenly gift to us.

  • @35jad Yea I've noticed that too. Sometimes it's as if he's uncomfortable in hie own skin.

  • @Loejyrrab that's what i felt from it

  • he is amazing. I love his yiddish cd "mamaloshen". he is simply an amazing artist. and I agree this is the best rendition of this song i have ever heard.

  • It is hard to believe this video has had only 80,000 hits! This is the best I have ever seen and heard. I'm 66 years old, I'm keeping this as long as I'm sucking air.

  • *Oh*. ~Wow~

    * What a beautiful man *

I had no idea! Mandy Patinkin ~~ as in, "you killed my father, prepare to die!" ~~ Right? Princess Bride?

I had no idea how beautiful this man was, 'til just this moment.

    *mmmm*.

  • He just draws you into the song, he loves it, means it, acts it. You have to watch this man sing this to get the full power of his rendition.

  • you know what the other day I was listening to "South Pacific" and wondering, what would this sound like if Patinkin was singing...and now I know :) Beautiful <3

  • I love his voice and interpretation for this master classic of the American Musical Theatre. Why is it that so many other fine voices cannot do Musical Theatre. I look forward to seeing more of his work.

  • I always HATED this song but Mandy Patinkin just made me LOVE it...the touch of a true singer!!!

  • Lovely.

  • I was in a production of South Pacific and I really wanted to be Cable just so I could sing this song, sadly I didn't get that part but I absolutely love this song and this is the best rendition I have heard. Brilliant.

  • Patinkin is absolutely brilliant. In the "made for TV version" of South Pacific with Glenn Close and Harry Connick, Jr., Connick's version of this is spectacular ... the ONLY thing about that movie that was worth seeing. However, Pantinkin simply blows away everyone who has ever taken the stage with Younger Than Springtime!

  • Luscious.

I wonder if the Broadway singers today are looking at performances like this. This is not to suggest that someone should copy; every artist must be unique.

  • @owlet450 Check him out as Che in Evita, it's a musical theatre religious experience! One of the best musical theater performances of the 20th century, and he's also BRILLIANT in Sunday in The Park with George

  • @owlet450

you should listen to the sondheim musical "sundays in the park with george" ... he OWNS that musical... at least the male part!

  • I saw it in May. I sat there for three hours and cried my eyes out. The guy playing Lt. Cable was Andrew Samonsky. I thought he was damn good.

  • Patinkin is a genius. I just showed him to my friends and they didn't get it, but there's something about him that I just can't understand. He's beyond words, really. He has something that no one else does.

  • @thetubkins I've had the same exact experience as you...adore him, others don't get it, etc. G

  • @thetubkins I've had the same exact experience as you...adore him, others don't get it, etc. Glad to know I'm not alone!

  • Ay Iñigo Montoya... Cantas tan hermoso.

  • loved it.did`nt know he could sing so beautyfully xx

  • this guy is jason gideon on criminal minds. so weird to see this :) he's really good

  • I saw the revival, I really like it. But this guy is really good

  • I only knew Mandy from Princess Bride, so I was really happy to find he was a great singer as well. Bravo on this performance! I've loved this song since first hearing it on the original album from my childhood. I think Mr Patinkin does a much better job of it here.

  • what a voice he has

  • In answer to Coachproc below. It was recorded in 1986 and was a studio cast recording of South Pacific. It had Jose Carreras singing the part of Emile De Becque and Kiri Te Kanawa singing the part of Nellie Forbush. Mandy was singing the part of Joe Cable.

  • Another beautiful voice!! Thanks for this video.

  • Beautiful performance, and does anyone write lyrics like this today?

  • Does anyone know what year this was recorded?

  • This is simply wonderful.

  • I love his voice!!! Great classic song.

  • @nancyfloressantos Excellent version. Audiences in New York City seem to

    love his singing.

  • Gosh, he is fantastic.

  • simply lovely!

  • what a master of musical theatre...wow

  • This is singing with the heart.

  • wow Mandy has a Great voice!!

  • Of course it's the same man from Criminal Minds.

  • effin amazin.

  • can't be the same one from criminal minds

  • Multi facted dude from Criminal Minds?

  • I wasn't a huge fan of this song until I heard him sing it. O_O He's amazing. He's so ridiculously multi-talanted. My hat's off to you Mandy

  • Holy *.

Mandy, I thought i knew ya.....

  • Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You gave me a song. Prepare to hear my serenade ^^

  • Wow! This may just be the best version of this song I ever heard.

  • Mandy is a brilliant singer. Love this song

  • One of the greatest Tenors..Mandy is the man

  • masterclass. masterclass.

can't WAIT for him and patti in toronto!

  • @Samarastube Mandy Patinkin is coming to Toronto? For what?

  • clcpclcplcpcpclcpcpclcplclapping!! clapping

  • I fell in love with Mandy in Yentle. It warms my heart to hear such a wonderful singing voice. It was almost like he was singing it to me... sigh. :)

  • I saw him for the first time on Criminal Minds. I had no idea he was such a wonderful singer

    Frank N

  • binkie, yeah, it looks like he's conducting himself. That arm movement almost looks like he thinks he's performing a number from "Guys and Dolls" (Come on Nathan, throw the dice! haha)

  • I'm probably one of the few people who didn't know Mandy Patinkin could sing. Yeah, I know he was in Evita, but... Good heavens, he CAN sing. This song he gave such a tender touch to that it almost made me cry, it was so beautiful and earnest. Thanks, Mandy.

  • great voice

  • Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She is my Springtime soft loves embrace, and I miss her when shes not with me and always yearn for the time she can be with me again..She makes me live and find joy in who I am now. Thank you and I am very much in love with you.

  • I have always loved his singing This is great

  • I'm in love! He's conducting himself! SIgh .... I wonder if a guy EVER felt that way about me? ;)

  • absolutely fantastic. Amazing voice.

  • Mandy Patinkin is amazing!!!! I love this song and I love him singing it. It amazing!!

  • maybe the greatest voice ever to grace the Broadway stage..

  • I only wanted to hear some South Pacific and found this gem.

This is a very touching rendition. Better than the 58 movie.

  • This is so beautiful and enchanting, i've listened numerous times this evening, 1st day of spring in the south of the world, an apt tune!!

  • bravo!

  • The very best. Lovely.

  • this is the most beautiful song ive ever heard especially when mandy sings it .one day ide love to sing a duet with him when i grow up !

  • holy crap

    amazing

    absolutely beautiful

  • This is, hands down, the most moving rendition I have ever heard. Anyone see the revival at Lincoln Center? I was stunned, absolutely stunned, at the guy currently playing Cable. An absolute stoneface who sang this song as though he couldn't wait for it to be over. No emotion or warmth whatsoever...how is that possible???

  • @prelasser Absolutely - this belonged on stage with Paulo Szot and Kelli O'Hara!

    I'd pay to see that.

  • @prelasser Agreed. The guy playing Cable wasn't the best. Then again, he had some big shoes to fill...Matthew Morrison had played Cable before him. As far as singing the song as though he couldn't wait for it to be over...given what happens after that song is over, can you blame him? :)

Luckily, the rest of the cast more than made up for him, especially Paulo Szot and Loretta Ables Sayre.

  • @prelasser bad casting

  • @prelasser

John Kerr played the part in the movie --another stone face--Bill Lee did the actual vocal--passable but not as good as Patinkin.

  • when you look at the tape..he told that he was so nervous..you can see that..He have a wonderful voice..

  • God damn..

That's a great man, right there.

  • Beautiful

  • Wow ... Listen up, all you future Lt. Cables! This is the way it should be done.

  • Hear, hear!

  • he has such a beuautiful voice

  • Could be the best from South Pcific ..easily.

    Patinkin ,is superb !

    Thanks for this wonderful offering.

  • This is the only recording of this song I've heard that I would call perfect.

    Patinkin.

    Wow.

Unreal recording. Emotion, beautiful, soaring vocals.

Far and away the best recording ever of this song.

  • Oh my gosh!!!! I've never heard him sing before and he is spectacular!!!!!!!!! :D

  • Put my 17 year old kitty to sleep today, and thought of this, and visited it with tears. Beat that.

  • My condolences on the passing of your little angel.

  • I've found that to be true at battlefields and memorials for those who died so young. There is a quiet, majestic stillness in the air honoring the sacrifice of those who fought on that ground when there were explosions and gunfire. All the more reason to appreciate the beauty of songs like this.

  • Just visited Gettysburg again May 9. New Visitor Center, for the first time. For some reason, thinking of those so very young who died there and elsewhere, this song seems so very appropriate. Wish they could have heard it.

  • Too bad right at the end the synch is off with vid and audio. Otherwise a memorable video.

  • Acting, good acting is total involvement, you are right ca2Ks, however, I have seen singers perform with a fraction of the emotion that Mandy displays. They have to compensate with pyrotechnics and brain blasting sound. Gosh, Mandy sings lovely songs accompanied with lovely music. What happened to that America?

  • Beautiful.

  • Nice hair. ;) I love Mandy Patkin. Especially in The Princess Bride, when he had wicked. And I watch Dead Like Me only for the sake of watching him. Patkin=Brilliance.

  • *wicked hair

  • *Patinkin... wow, typos

  • Who cares? He is still performing with a beautiful voice. I t.hank heaven for the people who have these precious clips. I didn't know he could sing when he was in the movie "Yentyl" with Streisand. She must not have wanted the competition.

  • I cannot believe how young he looks. Where did they find this? Was this a college performance? It must be. He hasn't seen those years in decades.

  • It's from 1986 and was part of a soundtrack recording that also featured Kiri Te Kanawa, Sarah Vaugn and Jose Carreras

  • I love the way his emotion and song are one. Mandy is not a passive observer. He is totally involved.

  • I don't mean this rudely so please don't take it the wrong way buuuuut... that's what acting is isn't it? aka mandy patinkin is a God! sorry i just had to give you crap for that

  • he's so amazing!!! mandy patinkin is the best lol

  • wonderful...although the hands are weird. i could NEVER get my voice as light as his is at the top, so gorgeous...

  • Fantastic rendition, wonderful, expressive and a great display of the art of mezzo voce!

  • One cannot ignore Patinkin. He is always so deeply involved with whatever material he's doing, he's always compelling. This is an incredibly delicate and beautiful and touching rendition. I wish some opera singers would adopt his method of not pushing for the big sound but illuminating the lyrics. Wonderful.

  • @marlylovesjewels I agree with the opera thing, but do keep in mind that the opera singers are not miced, and they have to fill up the entire opera house with their voice. I did not intend to critisize you about your comment, but you just seemed slightly misinformed; my brother is studying opera singing.

  • @bridget117-No, my dear Bridget, I am not misinformed. I am an opera singer and currently mentoring a world-class tenor whom I trust will be the next big thing in the opera world. The only way to fill an opera house with your sound is to have a properly-trained voice. Smaller voices that have correct technique soar above the orchestra. Not everyone is a Giacomini; if more singers would simply express the lyrics and not try to shell-shock the audience with their huge sound, ah, happiness.

  • @marlyharris I apologize. I didn't know. And I believe it was I who was misinformed in jumping to conclusions. I'm sorry.

  • Bridget-You've proved that you're a class act. Apology gratefully accepted.

  • I didn't know he could sing so beautifully.

  • Barbra should make ammends and sing a duet now with him.

  • One of the best videos on YouTube. Period.

  • Increadable just amazing tone and expression

  • great! oved it!

  • PERFECT! Better than the movie version, even better than Mario Lanza's notable version. I adore Lanza, but Patinkin has the very light and lyrical tenor voice that's really good for this song.

  • fully agree :)

  • me too

  • Exquisite :) The most beautiful rendition ever

  • What? He can sing too? Did I know this before?

  • Mandy is an actor who can sing--he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for "EVITA", and also appeared on broadway in such shows as "Sunday in the Park With George", "The Secret Garden", and many more.

  • Well, ditto the below comment, it doesn't make any sense why he didn't sing in Yentyl.

  • I believe Barbra Streisand was the only person in Yentl to sings and I think it was kinda cause Streisand directed it and wanted to be the only one to sing.

  • What a truly great singer

  • I will never understand why they didn't wrote a singing part for him in "Yentl". Same wondering About Amy Irving.

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs, and it just couldn't get any better. My daughter bought his CD and put just this song on another CD as many times as she could, so I can hear this jewel, over and over. Need I say, I have a jewel of a daughter.

  • Can't believe Mandy sings. He was great in "The Princess Bride"and even better in the series Criminal Minds. He not only can sing, he is superb. This version is as good as it gets !

  • any thoughts about the pumping of his fist and why he does it; is it so he can focus on that and not the notes?

  • He's probably counting, akin to a metronome.

  • I agree, cause I've seen a lot of videos of Mandy doing that, but not on stage, so I think he is keeping time.

  • Exactly! He doesn't do that on stage. He wants it perfect for a recording, and it's perfectly legit.

  • I think it is because he feels the song needs to drive more there and he is encouraging the conductor to move the song along. He is taking charge of the tempo instead of letting the orchestra direct him.

  • Mandy OWNS this song....I love the way he sings it.

  • Bravo, Bravo......

  • I love mandy patinkin since I saw Yentel. I love him. soy maria,

  • I had forgotten about this performance - saw it ages ago, and was flabbergasted then - even more flabbergasted now - perfect technique - real emotion - wonderful!

    Thanks for posting this gem.

  • Absolutely stunning! such technical virtuosity, particularly with those gorgeous high notes!!

  • I Agree! My favorite rendition of 'Younger Than Springtime."

  • I hoped that someone would post this. I had the record when I was younger. Thanks so much for posting. Mandy Patinkin is a very talented actor and singer. He can reach the high notes in this song with ease.

  • Truly magnificent!

  • Still can't stop watching this, over and over. He 'nailed it'.

  • Can't stop listening to this. Forgot how perfect he was as a young man.

  • From the ears directly to the heart. This performance is the essence of art.

  • His talent is ABSURD... I mean... HOW!?!?!?!

  • I discovered this recording in college, and I have NEVER heard a more soul-stirring rendition of this piece! His voice really does go straight to the heart!

  • Magnificent.

  • Perfect, Mandy,,,Beautiful.

  • This is a miracle. Im in tears too. I had the CD but I lost it. thank god for Youtube

  • Oh, thank you so much for this posting. I am bathed in tears. Wonderful
