The music and lyrics, by Rodgers and Hammerstein, are exquisite; Mandy sings with passion, drama and beauty. I first heard his rendition of this song 25 years ago and it has lived with me ever since. This is what dreams are made of.....
Mandy Patinkin is amazing. Absolutely amazing. It doesn't matter what he does - Criminal minds, Chicago Hope or just doing what he does best - singing. I love this man.
I just sent this to a friend on her birthday. It was the first song I saved on my new computer in 2008 when I got it. Obviously still have it. I am a rock on guy. But this . . . was beautiful.
If I remember correctly this was a special made for tv. Along with Kiri Takanawa? from NZ. Just people singing the songs from the show in their various parts. I had never heard Mandy sing before. I have never heard this song sung so beautifully!, with so much feeling, & so easily. The man loved the song, felt the song, & it shows!! I was, & still am, amazed & in awe of the talent on show here. You may have gathered that I love this version, sung live without any tricks. Brilliant, class.
He went to South Shore High School in Chicago, my high school. Although he went there the same time I did, I did not know him. However, I did see him as Tony in an amateur production of West Side Story at the community center on the South Side and he was wonderful.
I have a lover, soon to be my husband, who is 25 years my junior. We see eye to eye so well, we almost can't believe it. But, we do. We truly are the man/girl of our dreams. There are so many songs that represent us, but this one really touches my heart. Even though we don't need any songs to rep us. It's nice to find one. Lovely.
Chills. This makes me want to rush to the theatre. Oh no, but wait, I know what is out there now, and I do not want to see it. I will just keep watching this Youtube video clip to remind me of what can be out there.
Instead of rushing to the theatre, I find myself rushing away. Some, not all, theatre has become as painful as watching Act II of City Ballet's Nutcracker. I feel like I have been on a plane too long.
I lOVE this song. And him. But the only thing that I don't like about it is sometimes he has really awkward strange body language... other than that, flawless performance :).
Yes, but he is not on the stage here as Cable. He is in the recording studio with a terrific orchestra and an intuitive conductor. He is "feeling it." In this day and age of theatrical excrement being a perfectly acceptable expectation of many, be thankful for Mr. Patinkin's heavenly gift to us.
he is amazing. I love his yiddish cd "mamaloshen". he is simply an amazing artist. and I agree this is the best rendition of this song i have ever heard.
It is hard to believe this video has had only 80,000 hits! This is the best I have ever seen and heard. I'm 66 years old, I'm keeping this as long as I'm sucking air.
you know what the other day I was listening to "South Pacific" and wondering, what would this sound like if Patinkin was singing...and now I know :) Beautiful <3
I love his voice and interpretation for this master classic of the American Musical Theatre. Why is it that so many other fine voices cannot do Musical Theatre. I look forward to seeing more of his work.
I was in a production of South Pacific and I really wanted to be Cable just so I could sing this song, sadly I didn't get that part but I absolutely love this song and this is the best rendition I have heard. Brilliant.
Patinkin is absolutely brilliant. In the "made for TV version" of South Pacific with Glenn Close and Harry Connick, Jr., Connick's version of this is spectacular ... the ONLY thing about that movie that was worth seeing. However, Pantinkin simply blows away everyone who has ever taken the stage with Younger Than Springtime!
I wonder if the Broadway singers today are looking at performances like this. This is not to suggest that someone should copy; every artist must be unique.
@owlet450 Check him out as Che in Evita, it's a musical theatre religious experience! One of the best musical theater performances of the 20th century, and he's also BRILLIANT in Sunday in The Park with George
Patinkin is a genius. I just showed him to my friends and they didn't get it, but there's something about him that I just can't understand. He's beyond words, really. He has something that no one else does.
I only knew Mandy from Princess Bride, so I was really happy to find he was a great singer as well. Bravo on this performance! I've loved this song since first hearing it on the original album from my childhood. I think Mr Patinkin does a much better job of it here.
In answer to Coachproc below. It was recorded in 1986 and was a studio cast recording of South Pacific. It had Jose Carreras singing the part of Emile De Becque and Kiri Te Kanawa singing the part of Nellie Forbush. Mandy was singing the part of Joe Cable.
binkie, yeah, it looks like he's conducting himself. That arm movement almost looks like he thinks he's performing a number from "Guys and Dolls" (Come on Nathan, throw the dice! haha)
I'm probably one of the few people who didn't know Mandy Patinkin could sing. Yeah, I know he was in Evita, but... Good heavens, he CAN sing. This song he gave such a tender touch to that it almost made me cry, it was so beautiful and earnest. Thanks, Mandy.
She is my Springtime soft loves embrace, and I miss her when shes not with me and always yearn for the time she can be with me again..She makes me live and find joy in who I am now. Thank you and I am very much in love with you.
This is, hands down, the most moving rendition I have ever heard. Anyone see the revival at Lincoln Center? I was stunned, absolutely stunned, at the guy currently playing Cable. An absolute stoneface who sang this song as though he couldn't wait for it to be over. No emotion or warmth whatsoever...how is that possible???
@prelasser Agreed. The guy playing Cable wasn't the best. Then again, he had some big shoes to fill...Matthew Morrison had played Cable before him. As far as singing the song as though he couldn't wait for it to be over...given what happens after that song is over, can you blame him? :)
Luckily, the rest of the cast more than made up for him, especially Paulo Szot and Loretta Ables Sayre.
I've found that to be true at battlefields and memorials for those who died so young. There is a quiet, majestic stillness in the air honoring the sacrifice of those who fought on that ground when there were explosions and gunfire. All the more reason to appreciate the beauty of songs like this.
Just visited Gettysburg again May 9. New Visitor Center, for the first time. For some reason, thinking of those so very young who died there and elsewhere, this song seems so very appropriate. Wish they could have heard it.
Acting, good acting is total involvement, you are right ca2Ks, however, I have seen singers perform with a fraction of the emotion that Mandy displays. They have to compensate with pyrotechnics and brain blasting sound. Gosh, Mandy sings lovely songs accompanied with lovely music. What happened to that America?
Nice hair. ;) I love Mandy Patkin. Especially in The Princess Bride, when he had wicked. And I watch Dead Like Me only for the sake of watching him. Patkin=Brilliance.

I don't mean this rudely so please don't take it the wrong way buuuuut... that's what acting is isn't it? aka mandy patinkin is a God! sorry i just had to give you crap for that
One cannot ignore Patinkin. He is always so deeply involved with whatever material he's doing, he's always compelling. This is an incredibly delicate and beautiful and touching rendition. I wish some opera singers would adopt his method of not pushing for the big sound but illuminating the lyrics. Wonderful.
@marlylovesjewels I agree with the opera thing, but do keep in mind that the opera singers are not miced, and they have to fill up the entire opera house with their voice. I did not intend to critisize you about your comment, but you just seemed slightly misinformed; my brother is studying opera singing.
@bridget117-No, my dear Bridget, I am not misinformed. I am an opera singer and currently mentoring a world-class tenor whom I trust will be the next big thing in the opera world. The only way to fill an opera house with your sound is to have a properly-trained voice. Smaller voices that have correct technique soar above the orchestra. Not everyone is a Giacomini; if more singers would simply express the lyrics and not try to shell-shock the audience with their huge sound, ah, happiness.
PERFECT! Better than the movie version, even better than Mario Lanza's notable version. I adore Lanza, but Patinkin has the very light and lyrical tenor voice that's really good for this song.
Mandy is an actor who can sing--he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for "EVITA", and also appeared on broadway in such shows as "Sunday in the Park With George", "The Secret Garden", and many more.
I believe Barbra Streisand was the only person in Yentl to sings and I think it was kinda cause Streisand directed it and wanted to be the only one to sing.
This has always been one of my favorite songs, and it just couldn't get any better. My daughter bought his CD and put just this song on another CD as many times as she could, so I can hear this jewel, over and over. Need I say, I have a jewel of a daughter.
Can't believe Mandy sings. He was great in "The Princess Bride"and even better in the series Criminal Minds. He not only can sing, he is superb. This version is as good as it gets !
I think it is because he feels the song needs to drive more there and he is encouraging the conductor to move the song along. He is taking charge of the tempo instead of letting the orchestra direct him.
I had forgotten about this performance - saw it ages ago, and was flabbergasted then - even more flabbergasted now - perfect technique - real emotion - wonderful!
I hoped that someone would post this. I had the record when I was younger. Thanks so much for posting. Mandy Patinkin is a very talented actor and singer. He can reach the high notes in this song with ease.
I discovered this recording in college, and I have NEVER heard a more soul-stirring rendition of this piece! His voice really does go straight to the heart!
The music and lyrics, by Rodgers and Hammerstein, are exquisite; Mandy sings with passion, drama and beauty. I first heard his rendition of this song 25 years ago and it has lived with me ever since. This is what dreams are made of.....

@marlyharris I apologize. I didn't know. And I believe it was I who was misinformed in jumping to conclusions. I'm sorry.

Bridget-You've proved that you're a class act. Apology gratefully accepted.

I didn't know he could sing so beautifully.

great! oved it!

PERFECT! Better than the movie version, even better than Mario Lanza's notable version. I adore Lanza, but Patinkin has the very light and lyrical tenor voice that's really good for this song.

fully agree :)

What? He can sing too? Did I know this before?
leah1959 3 years ago
Mandy is an actor who can sing--he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for "EVITA", and also appeared on broadway in such shows as "Sunday in the Park With George", "The Secret Garden", and many more.

Well, ditto the below comment, it doesn't make any sense why he didn't sing in Yentyl.
leah1959 3 years ago
I believe Barbra Streisand was the only person in Yentl to sings and I think it was kinda cause Streisand directed it and wanted to be the only one to sing.

What a truly great singer

I will never understand why they didn't wrote a singing part for him in "Yentl". Same wondering About Amy Irving.

This version is as good as it gets !
mickyblue247 3 years ago
any thoughts about the pumping of his fist and why he does it; is it so he can focus on that and not the notes?
jaxx189 3 years ago
He's probably counting, akin to a metronome.
naoussa2you2 3 years ago 2
I agree, cause I've seen a lot of videos of Mandy doing that, but not on stage, so I think he is keeping time.
blackpython 3 years ago
Exactly! He doesn't do that on stage. He wants it perfect for a recording, and it's perfectly legit.
klickenpod 3 years ago
I think it is because he feels the song needs to drive more there and he is encouraging the conductor to move the song along. He is taking charge of the tempo instead of letting the orchestra direct him.

Mandy OWNS this song....I love the way he sings it.
