He smartly chose to show the "wtf hand motion" in its highest possible hand position in use, so that he could play with the misunderstanding with the Indian meaning. I've been to India and don't recall that but, instead, a lot of nodding or swinging of the head (mix of the western nodding for "yes" and for "no") to mean kind of "yes"
