My question is what medications can someone take if they ever get pneumonia etc,....I appears that SS can occur with almost any type of drug. .

Took Lexapro for 2 yrs and back in June I started having heart palpitations. This progressed into vitreous detachments, muscle aches, chest pain, consistent migraines, tremors, irritability and a lot of other things. My doctor ran a lot of tests and everything came up clean. He took me off the Lexapro and it helped briefly but it seems like I'm just getting worse. He has referred me to a neurologist but I've read that SS is treated by more then just taking the patient off the med.

I am on zoloft 200mg, I was with a cousin, and stupidly took st. john's wart. I became almost catatonic, I couldn't breath, I was having terrible vibes and hallucinations. I felt as if my life was a television show that was ending, and I, in effect was dying. It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced, Even still it frightens me. We don't need SSRI's or any of those screwed up drugs that have worse side effects than the original problem. What the government needs to do is legalize some pot. Side effects from pot include Happy,Hungry, and Sleepy. That's it!

@milanovicful Cymbalta actually has a mild dopamine reuptake inhibitor much much less than the serotonin and norepinephrine. Why don't they have a dopamine reuptake inhibitor? DRI

I think it can if you overdose, but it definitely can if it's combined with certain other drugs like SSRIs, MAOIs, recreational doses of dextromethorphan and other drugs.

I had this and nearly died a week ago from a pain management doctor giving me a drug called Nucynta , My blood pressure went to 168 over 130, near stroke levels. I was unable to speak had dystonic type recations also, horrible. I had a similar effect from an antibiotic called Cipro could not talk right and could not sleep, seeing things. BOth times the ER would not give a diagnosis just said reaction to medication

I started taking LUVOX 5 days ago. I have a terrible morning sickness everyday, I lost my apetite, and I wake up in the middle of the night shaking with my hands sweating. So yesterday I only took half of the dosis I was taking and I feel so much better today. When My doctor prescribed me this medication he said side effects were normal and they could disappear in a couple of days, what do you think I should do? Coz I havent tell him I feel so bad.

@Khriztie87 All of those adverse reactions can be caused by Luvox. The side effects should lessen/go away over a couple of weeks. You should tell your physician's office what dose you are taking. The best way to start Luvox (or any antidepressent) is start with a low dose and slowly titrate up. You can even start taking a low dose every other day, then every day, then increase the dose. If you are taking more than 100mg -the dose needs to be taken in two divided doses. Hope this helps!

@Khriztie87  If only it were as innocuous as it seems. After being prescribed zoloft and then being changed over to paxil, I experienced serotonin syndrome. I would describe this occurrence as a descent into hell. The experience is simply indescribable. I was left maimed and disabled, and I am now afflicted with Guillain Barre syndrome as a direct result of antidepressants. Beware, the cure can be more insufferable than the original condition. I only wish I was just still depressed!!!

I got diagnosed with serotonin syndrome when I took an SSRI and my migraine medication (doctors never warned me). I remember after about an hour my muscles started twitching involuntarily and I started hallucinating loud noises like crashing and banging. After that my vision got replaced with what looks like the inside of a kaleidescope and I passed out and was told I was found having seizures. It took about two days before I felt fine again. Don't be stupid like I was and double check your meds

You know what NOBODY mentions... is how long this can take to occur. Can it happen the first time you take it? Does it happen after a few days of taking the mixed drugs... weeks? months? years? I, for the second time, just took 15mg of adderall xr on top of my 50mg of zoloft. I'm irritable but I almost think it's from the anxiety that comes with being worried about serotonin syndrome. When I get anxious, I get irritable. So... am I going to die? lol

Yes, it can happen the first time you take a new drug -or increase a strength of a drug. It usually presents within 6-24 hours from taking the new drug (or increasing strength). Adderall can cause aggitation, anxiety and irritability all on its own -so it is difficult to determine if it is SS. Look for signs of jitteriness, tremors, aggitation and belly issues. It doesn't hurt to call your physician, if you are concerned -SS is usually diagnosed by a quick physical exam and history.

@MickeyLWalker SS will usually present within 6 to 24 hours from change or starting new drug. It typically clears up within 24 hours of discontinuing inciting drugs. For mild cases, just stopping the drug will be enough. In more serious cases, stopping the drug and supportive care is necessary. Treatment can include IV fluids, serotonin antagonists, benzos, oxygen and general supportive care.

@GetPharmacyAdvice Great advice here. If your a rec drug user than having some Clonazepam or Valium would be best to treat seizures, muscle tremors and panic/anxiety. Otherwise hydrate yourself with water and keep cool, go outside etc.

@MickeyLWalker Hey mickey Im gonna have a different view from GetPharmacy. Psilocybin binds to the seratonin sub receptors 5HT2a, 5HT5a and others. It does not DIRECTLY affect seratonin levels like SSRIs or SERs. It only mimics 5HT(seratonin) thus it should have no serious risk of SS. However MAOIs can boost their affects by a five fold.

The biggest risk is not really combining SSRIs with SSRIs or releasers but combining SSRIs with MAOIs. MAOIs delay the amount of time for the seratonin to be oxidized (destroyed) and thus coupled with a SSRI/Releasing action can cause seratonin syndrome from increased levels. Naturally seratonin controls gut movement, hear rate, pupil dilation, tempreture and mood so if you have any of these things but very strong/high levels off and your pupils are very dilates its most likely SS. MAOIs boost

@1ukjunglednbraver You could of, most illegal or even legal drugs with SSRI actions also have some MAOI activity, and MAOI boosts seratonin by a lot.
