OMG! I watch the video and it was just out of nowhere. He seems perfectly fine, then all of the sudden, he just fell to the floor. Unfortuantly, things like this happens a lot in basketball.
for one they were emotional, and you do regrettable things when you're emotional. but he didn't stop taking his medication, he just had it drastically reduced. I think they prescribed him 240mg dosage of Endural. The thing was it made him sluggish on the court. So he kept talking the doctors into lowering his dosages. I think when he died, he was down to 40mg. I think the doctors and Hank should have put his health first and kept taking the prescribed dosage.
@DonRonter well...supposedly a defibulator was put on campus for him and it was supposed to be courtside at all times but at that game it wasnt and was just outside the doors.... but I do agree he didnt take his meds he took a big risk and sadly paid the price =\
give them rights to use the audio its a tribute to a great young man and ball player it might even help you sell more of the song but to disable it is childish and stupid IMO
the guy could play and may have been the next Michael Cage-but putting a man eating fish in your roomates room-roid-rage. I'm guessing his nuts looked liked raisenettes-hope I'm wromg but doubt I am
I remember when Michael Cage put up 48 pts against Shaq and LSU. Oh wait he never did that pretty sad career. Pretty much like your comment and your life.
RIP Hank... You didn't have much of a game and wouldn't have made it in the NBA you still played hard.. all be it in the WCC a minor league conference with players that can't play in the High level of competion it is still tragic...
Youre a complete JACKASS!!! You have no idea how good he would have been. He led the nation in scoring and rebounding. You cant judge him based on how he played in college. Oh yeah...and youre a complete idiot for making the comments you did!
RIP tvtechwonV you sat in front of a television, watched other players play, and had opinions. You probably didnt make your eighth grade basketball squad and then cut from your high school cheer squad. Its ok your life is still tragic...
I,ll never forget the day that Hank Gathers died. As tough as it was to watch how it happened, at least it happened on his canvas! I grew up on the playgrounds of northeast Philly and played in the Sonny Hill league. Seen some great players! Never seen anyone like Hank! L-Train, Randy Woods, Brian Shorter. All great. Only one Hank. R.I.P.!
Cant believe there are no LMU 1990 NCAA TOURNAMENT GAMES or clips. Put em up!!! They scored like 150 ppg per game and shot tons of 3's-extremely exciting to watch!!
I was a UNLV fan in 1988-90, but when the story about the LMU games came to me, I got interested immediately. When the story about Hank broke, I broke down. And then I read the book that recounted his life...and it made me laugh and think at the same time. All out at all times! That's how it should be...in sports and in life
That Loyola team was something to watch. I still remember that game against Oklahoma in December 1989. That is the way basketball should be played: up and down the floor, pressing defense, helter skeleter.
I was an 8th grader in that 1989-1990 season and I and all my friends wrote "Hank 44" on the back of our basketball shoes as a tribute.
I'll never forget Hank Gathers and I think about him every now and then and wish like heck he coulda lived through that and received better treatment for his heart condition.... Hank affected alot of people and I feel very sure his death opened alot of eyes toward cardio problems and young athletes... I just wish he coulda lived and enjoyed his life more.... god bless you Hank
Hank, Bo, Jeff, Tom, and the LMU Lions Basketball team made a wonderful impact on me as a student and as an Alum... the memories are so vivid as if it happened yesterday.. March 4, 1990 will be etched in my mind forever. Hank RIP... Bo, live on my friend..
Hank Gathers and Loyola Marymount basketball with coach Paul Westhead have been one of my all-time college basketball stories; the death of Hank, plus the incredible run to the Elite Eight in 1990 was something I'll never forget. The 1989-90 team set an NCAA record by scoring 122.4 points per game, and I loved their helter-skelter style. Hank, save us a game on Heaven's playground!
Hank died from a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Blood flow out of the heart is disrupted by an enlarged septum (divides the right heart from the left heart), and fatal irregular heart rhythms can result during strenous activity because the heart doesn't get enough blood. Beta blockers (Inderal the medication Hank was on) are used to treat this condition, but they make a person tired and intolerant to physical activity.
Thanks for the Vid. Was there at school when it happened, but not at the game. I believe he went off the meds because it slowed him down. A good man and an excellent ball player. Thanks agian for the footage...over 6,000 people attended his funeral. Matt '92 LMU Baseball
Myocardial something. An inflamed/weakened heart. Some people are born with it...basically, he was on meds to regulate his heart but they made him sluggish. Either he reduced his dosage, or the team doctor told him it was OK. I can't remember. He collapsed during a game in the WCC tournament just before the NCAAs and died right there on the floor
The LMU teams with Gathers and Kimble have remained my favorite college basketball team ever, and I still remember waking up to the news that Hand had died, quite literally on the court. No matter how good a team is, no matter how many players gte to the NBA, I will always refer to the LMU teams of 1988-1990 as something incredibly special.
I grew up watching Loyola Marymount, and I remember the night he died. The way that team responded and played is something I'll never forget. Thanks for posting this!

Why did his parents sue LMU when he's the one who stopped taking his medication? That's why he died.
