The only defense I can agree with when it comes to us defending ourselves is...well actually I can't agree with any type of defense coming from ourself but all coming from Christ. But the only one I see Him using through us is us fleeing to the next city(Matthew 10:23) as Paul did. But when face to face with the adversary, we do not flee, we are as bold as lions even while being attacked.

(Ephesians 6:17) So if Jesus told them to bring a sword. Matthew 26:52 shows that Jesus did not mean the physical sword, for why would he want us to perish by the sword? He meant for them to bring the Word of God, which He also came to bring. They just had a lack of understanding at the time.

While I sympathize with you two gentlemen, I think we should not rush to judgment. From the sound of it I would think the man that attacked you was mentally unstable. It isn't necessarily that he attacked you because of the gospel or anything like that. And we don't know his background or what may have transpired in his life that would make him snap. Rejoice says peter if you are a part taker of this, because says 1Peter 2:20 "For what glory is it , if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it , ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth"
I do admire your efforts, but be very careful how you interpret "turn the other cheek" passage. If we suffer for righteousness sake, that's one thing. But when unjust aggressors attack us, we do have the right to defend ourselves. That's DEFEND ourselves, not attack. God gave Israel the right to defend themselves in Esther 8. God does not want us to essentially commit suicide by allowing people to kill us. Also, look at Luke 22:36. The sword was for protection. So be very careful.
TRD, you are free to disagree. But disagreement must have a firm and holistic basis in Scripture. It is clear that God in Esther 8 providentially opened the door for Israel to defend themselves. In Luke 22:36, Jesus clearly was speaking of getting a sword for protection in dangerous times. You might want to slow down and learn a little something from someone who knows Christ and has walked with Him for over 20 years. All I'm saying is, be very careful with how you read "turn the other cheek."
And the reason is simply this. Too many people take that passage to mean that we stand by and let folks beat the crap out of us, no matter the reason and at any time. If you were just walking to the store minding your own business, and some guy started attacking you, it is not Christlike to let him beat you up. That is nonsense. God gave you life, and you have the right to defend that life, as Esther clearly teaches.

Christ didn't defend Himself because He had a mission to SAVE us. We are not Him and we don't save by our sacrifice. Yes He did give us wisdom. He gave us His Spirit. We are to walk in the Spirit. Paul knew that when he went to Jerusalem he would be killed there. The prophet Agabus told him. Though the people tried to stop him, he knew it was the will of God. Jesus knew He had to go to Jerusalem to be offered as the Sacrificial Lamb...Peter tried to stop Him, but He knew that was the will of God. Did they not have wisdom for doing these things? But the only one I see Him using through us is us fleeing to the next city(Matthew 10:23) as Paul did. Jesus also said that He did not come to bring peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34) So what sword was He speaking about? I can only agree with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:17) So if Jesus told them to bring a sword. Matthew 26:52 shows that Jesus did not mean the physical sword, for why would he want us to perish by the sword? He meant for them to bring the Word of God, which He also came to bring. They just had a lack of understanding at the time.

While I sympathize with you two gentlemen, I think we should not rush to judgment. From the sound of it I would think the man that attacked you was mentally unstable. It isn't necessarily that he attacked you because of the gospel or anything like that. And we don't know his background or what may have transpired in his life that would make him snap. That's all I'm saying.

Well we can rationalize the reasons why we were attacked with psychological theories, or we can grasp the apparent reality that we were attacked while preaching the gospel.
It is the gospel of Jesus Christ that rebukes and reproves a person to make them want to either accept Him or reject Him harshly.
We were not attacked, but He was attacked once again through us.
He was mentally unstable in all of his ways, because he doesn't know the Way. Mentally unstable is to be used by Satan.

double minded is something totally different from being mentally unstable. There are many who are sick in mental health institutions. It is not because they didn't accept the gospel. With all due respect you are making a judgment that only Yahweh could truly know. All you know is what you were doing while you were attacked. The rest is your perception of what that means.

Question. Did you try casting the demon or demons out of that man? Did you ask the angels to protect you from his vicious onslaughts? Sometimes,Christians forget to ask the angels for protection,believe it or not. Did you try restraining him so at least one of you could lay hands on him? Restraining someone is not the same as attacking them. I have participated in restraining a violent and deranged man while the man of God laid hands on him and prayed the evil out of him. It worked!!

But how can one recognize the unfruitful works of darkness unless the discernment comes from The Father? Do you not know the description in 1 Corinthians 2:15 that reads, "But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man."?

Amen Brothers. If we preach 10,000 words to people and then display one fleshly reaction...all the good words go down the drain. Every time we are persecuted it is the best opportunity we will have to testify and demonstrate that we are new creatures; in the world but no longer of the world. Our actions speak louder than words. Well done is better than well said.

For example my brother, I know where I have to be is not where I am today... its simple.. the nature of Christ, Love, most be in all of us!! To understand better your point of you, what verse on the book are you refering to? Christ is our example, and "vengeance is mine said the Lord", so there is not much that we can do. If we ought to defend ourselves we are not loving as Christ, the only thing left will be depart and run. But Christ did not run, nor Esteban before they were killed!!

I do admire your efforts, but be very careful how you interpret "turn the other cheek" passage. If we suffer for righteousness sake, that's one thing. But when unjust aggressors attack us, we do have the right to defend ourselves. That's DEFEND ourselves, not attack. God gave Israel the right to defend themselves in Esther 8. God does not want us to essentially commit suicide by allowing people to kill us. Also, look at Luke 22:36. The sword was for protection. So be very careful.

TRD, you are free to disagree. But disagreement must have a firm and holistic basis in Scripture. It is clear that God in Esther 8 providentially opened the door for Israel to defend themselves. In Luke 22:36, Jesus clearly was speaking of getting a sword for protection in dangerous times. You might want to slow down and learn a little something from someone who knows Christ and has walked with Him for over 20 years. All I'm saying is, be very careful with how you read "turn the other cheek."

And the reason is simply this. Too many people take that passage to mean that we stand by and let folks beat the crap out of us, no matter the reason and at any time. If you were just walking to the store minding your own business, and some guy started attacking you, it is not Christlike to let him beat you up. That is nonsense. God gave you life, and you have the right to defend that life, as Esther clearly teaches.

Christfollower7day...I believe you misunderstand me. The WHOLE Bible is God's word and given to us for instruction. All of it teaches us. So Christ sent us the book of Esther. Christ didn't defend Himself because He had a mission to SAVE us. We are not Him and we don't save by our sacrifice. God does not call us to be doormats to be attacked for no reason by any unjust aggresor. That is the point.

LOL, my human nature with honesty, I would have defended myself... but I will have to disagree in the point that Paul and many others do teach us to not repay anger with anger, nor hate with hate, but to copy Christ actions, and bless those who do those things to us.

TRD, yes, it is a form of suicide if you allow someone to kill you when you are attacked. Jesus laid down His life on purpose for a purpose. That's JESUS doing what's necessary to give us salvation. We are not Him, and we don't save anyone. We do use the Sword of the Spirit, but this does not mean we become doormats for anyone at any time. Again, I applaud you in THAT situation, as it seems he was attacking you because you stood up for Christ...

I understand that in Biblical days some of these persecuted and murdered and tortured Christians did seek to hide from their enemies. So,in the face of aggression,I am thinking fleeing is an option for Christians. They do not just have to stand there and take it. I do not really understand that scripture because it seems to me that to lay down one's life for a stranger or an enemy would be greater loves. However, sacrificing one's life in order to save the life of another is not suicide,even if the life you save is that of your attacker. After all,if you fight back you could kill somebody and it is perfectly acceptable if a person would rather die than take the chance of killing someone
