  • Sacre Coeur medieval??????

  • The point the guy was making was silly. I actually thought he was secular until the end of the argument. We don't have to believe in the greek gods to appreciate the works of art made in their honor any more than we have to believe in the christian god to appreciate Vivaldi. Those things are part of our culture forever, and we can appreciate them on their own right, without needing to believe in their mitology

  • Hitchslapped...

  • "Now we're just bickering."

...about how you brought up a point that does not actually support your claim?

  • haha, HITCHSLAP!

    =3

  • Hitchins knows everything about fucking everything, he's like some verbal Batman.

I bet that dude was like "oh fuck, he knows more about what I just said than I do..."

  • Comment removed

  • a bitchslap of biblical proportions. its not even fair to have these twats "debate" Hitch.

  • I don't have any dynamite so I'm off to repudiate my nearest cathedral. That'll bring it down.

  • It was indeed a silly point that Kirsch made. Kirsch is comparing criticism of ideas with vandalism. By this standard, criticism of the president is tantamount to vandalizing the White House. Very silly point, and absurd analogy to compare criticism of ideas with physical vandalism. Religion cannot tolerate criticism, because the ideas of religion are so obviously ridiculous--therefore no one must be allowed to say the emperor has no clothes.

  • The preceding comments where made by my gf, whom sometimes forgets to switch to her account. While I am atheist myself, keep the comments at iamyou86, as I am mainly concerned with bass guitar.

  • @originalmo07 Well if "she" wants to finish our conversation, you can get back to me. I am just here to show the silly, false assumptions and set them right. Cheers.

  • Go Hitch!!

I love the way this guy never pulls punches but goes after a dumb ass all the way without giving him an inch.

  • @TRUNDLETHOR Or! It could be a smoke machine creating a fog in which lies are told to try and discredit truth and enforce idiocy.

  • @TRUNDLETHOR Very foolish observation.

  • @TRUNDLETHOR Silly point.very,very silly point,extremely silly point,jolly silly point,very foolish observation.

  • @TRUNDLETHOR When you have not seen anything pointing towards something existing, it doesn't mean saying it doesn't exist, is an assumption

If you say lepracauns doesn't exits, would it be an assumption or would it be something based on a lack of evidence? If you think it's an assumption, and you child asked you if they were real, you would say what?

  • I'm gonna go to a church, and listen to the sermon and go 'Silly point'.

  • @videogamenostalgia Brilliant idea! You've inspired me to go to a church, wait for the right moment, and say "very foolish observation".

  • @videogamenostalgia

    hahhahaha

  • 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b] 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

  • @luke2thab If you want fantasy stories and fairy tales, read Harry Potter.

  • @IamYou86 You do realize how ridiculous your response is right? We are talking about God here, not fairly tales. This is the question that everyman in the world asks himself "Is there a God". You are not earnestly seeking this though. You are seeking hurt and crush the religious people of the world...For what reason? You are free from religious persecution. Be free. You are hindering our freedom by being so cruel to us.

  • @luke2thab No, I am merely trying to get you to be free as well. You are a slave and happy to have your shackles and it is backwards to me.

  • @luke2thab No...you are shackled by religion and you are quite obviously happy with it. If I was a christian I would kill my family and then myself to get to paradise that is super awesome and amazing and all that. But wait! God says murder and suicide is a sin! Gah! So theres this uber awesome place that we can all get to but we have to do it purely on Gods terms. Oh and If I didn't believe in "him" when I was alive I can't die then see him and change my mind, I go to hell for that. FREEEEEEDOM

  • @IamYou86 I am not shackled by anything, only my own response to what is around me and my moral obligation to humanity. You are shackled by your own arrogance and are not actually seeking for truth, buy your time will come when you look face to face with the TRUE desire to know God and the meaning of life. For those who seek this right now, you are spitting in their face and obviously quite happy with doing so. Also, your understanding of Christianity is horrible!

  • @luke2thab I am sure you are a decent and loving human being. I just want you to also understand that you can be decent and kind without a religion. Religion is like a toy. you are free to play with that toy but you must keep your toy to yourself. I do not want to play with that toy nor do I want my children playing with it. keep it in the privacy of your own home. The reason why I don't give much respect is because I get none when I say I am an atheist. I am told I will burn in hell forever.

  • @IamYou86 When you have a childish understanding of religion, it is very easy to see it as a toy, but it is an existencial longing that all humans have and Christ fulfills that longing by NOT making us do a certain thing, but by accepting that God loves us and that he made us to be in communion with him. By not choosing this you are choosing hell. You are choosing not to be with God. "If I was a christian I would kill my family and then myself to get to paradise" You do not Christianity at all.

  • @IamYou86 Also, you first completely, dishonestly misrepresent Islamic fundamentalism with weird martyrdom non truths. Then you confuse christianity and islam. Coming away from your response I realize that your knowledge of religion is so elementary that it is no wonder you hate it so much. I hate calculus because I have a really hard time understanding it. But it goes deeper than that. You hate it so much that you aren't even willing to pay those who are religious one ounce of respect. Strange!

  • @luke2thab No dearheart, I have quite extensively studied the psychology of religion dating back to Ancient Egypt and before. It is merely a scam to control large populations of people. It works too!. You try to tell me that you know the unknowable and try and pass it off as fact. It is absolutely incredible. You have a being that tells you how to live your life down to how you may have sex and with whom you may have it with. Masturbation without the threat of eternal punishment is boring.

  • @IamYou86 Why would the early Christians write the New Testament to control people? There is no indication of this in the Bible. You are confusing the corrupt early catholic church with the apostles of Christ. Get your facts strait man. Also, stop treating me like a baby. I am just as experienced in life as you are. I just accept the fact that God created us for a reason. You on the other hand do not want to accept God because you want to masturbate, and God doesn't see this as meaningful.

  • @luke2thab Exactly, God gives man all sorts of temptations and then tells you that you may not partake in any of them. My mother is Catholic, I have been to church many a time. My father is Jewish and I have been to Temple many a time. I was raised as both you see. And one day I realized that there was no way I could believe both. So I quit both. I had the epiphany that it was all bullshit. All religion. I love how you think you can pick and choose what parts of Christianity you like the best.

  • @originalmo07 As far as Job is concerned. God is a good, but he also lets us choose our own way. I have done it and you have done it. We are human. Have you finished the story of Job? This is one of the first things written by the ancient Jews and the message still holds true to the message of Christ. Though we may live horrible lives here on earth and feel completely abandoned by God. He is still faithful to us. We have to be willing to give all of our earthly goods to have Christ.

  • @luke2thab Take the story of Job...He was nothing but the utmost faithful and committed of all gods followers and he allows Satan to screw with him in agonizing ways. Why would he do that?!!? Is that what you get when you are so devout? Please explain to me why anybody would want any part of that. What lesson is there to learn from that? God loves us all you say? By the mere chance that you were born in a christian household you believe in Jesus. If you are in India you would believe in Ganesh.

  • @originalmo07 I do not pick and chose what I like the best. I believe that Christ has freed us from the law of the Old Testament laws (which provide us with a history of the Jewish people) and that I am saved through faith by believing that God made himself a man to save humanity for the problem of death. I know 5 Indians who are converts to Christianity. Christianity is growing in every middle eastern country. Why? Because people genuinely believe that is true.

  • @luke2thab People also once genuinely believed that the earth revolved round the sun (one of many untruthful assertions foisted upon humanity by the mountebanks of Christianity). Your appeals to authority and to widespread belief do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to bolster your argument, which is, in any event, a very well-negated one.

  • @uscjd2004 The earth does revolve around the sun, son.

  • @CobinRain LOL! So it does. I hate it when that happens.

  • @uscjd2004 One of the biggest fails i have ever seen. I have a screenshot of this and will post it on facebook.

  • @MultiSamism LOL! I have to admit, it was a pretty awe inspiring typo. Go ahead if it gives you a jolly. I don't have a problem with having a little fun made at my expense. Schadenfreude does not discriminate.

  • @luke2thab If you had been born in the middle east you would be Muslim. Stop acting so righteous when everything you believe happened by CHANCE. If you lived in Ancient Rome you would believe in Thor. If you lived in Africa you would believe in the great JuJu at the bottom of the sea. This is why religion is so faulty in my eyes. That all the other humans who happened to not be born in the same place as you will never be "saved". So demeaning in so many ways.

  • @originalmo07 If you were born in the Middle East you would be a muslim too? Or would you still be much wiser than we inferior religious people? You are digging yourself in a whole. The Bible specifically says that people are subject to the knowledge they are available too. So..you, living in America have the full capability of seeking truth. You are quoting Dawkins and it fails in this discussion. Don't make false assumptions, it shows. I do not hold to a chance philosophy. I hold to a purpose.

  • @TRUNDLETHOR Actually, Atheism is not "disbelief in God." It is "non-belief in God." Minor difference you might think, but an important distinction nonetheless. Let's not presuppose anything.

  • so funny

  • the Pantheon is in Rome not Paris... i think... eehh i'll just put it out there the intrawebs will correct me

  • @bennygzor "...is a building in the Latin Quarter in Paris."

    Wiki.

  • @ShawnsterVideos There is one in Rome also its a church.. i visited it once but forgot

  • @bennygzor There's a pantheon in Paris also but no one goes there.

  • All that American breeding came to that.

    Your ignorance and ad hominem?

  • don't fuck with Hitchens

  • The foundation stone of the Basilique Sacré-Coeur was laid in 1875. It was consecrated in 1891, fully completed in 1914, and elevated to the status of a basilica in 1919, after the end of the First World War.

    Jonathan you Fail.

  • Hitchen's misses the point. His opponent was saying that to deny the influence of religion on culture is to be as crazy and intolerant as the Taliban. And he's right. Think of all the glorious art and architecture and music and poetry inspired by religion. Religion is part of the human experience. Much of it is good and true--and much of it is a load of bigoted nonsense. We need to be discerning, but Hitchen's chucks it all out, and I think that's rigid and narrow minded. And intolerant.

  • @mightymissk No he doesn't want it all chucked out. He just wants the bigoted nonsense gone. Don't believe me? Watch the Four Horsemen, they discuss that very topic.

  • @mightymissk Jonathon was not a true "opponent" of Hitchens he didn't know what he was talking about. Hitchens also discusses this topic of art in his intelligence squared debate where he was teamed up with Richard Dawkins and a.c. Grayling.

  • @jagexisthedevil But Jonathon DID know what he was talking about. Hitchens is being ahistoric. Religion informs our culture & much of it is good & beautiful. Think of Handel's Messiah. Hitchens should be railing against ALL rigid belief systems. The most vicious & destructive "ism" currently, is neo-conservatism, the idolatrous worship of corporate power -an ism practiced by both secular & religious right wing nuts. These people will destroy us. So why doesn't Hitchens attack the neo-cons?

  • Secularists have nothing against the aesthetic achievements of religion; Cathedrals and statues are very beautiful indeed. As Hitchens says in The Four Horsemen, we share with Sophocles a disdain for desecration of these masterpieces. It's the same as a Christian marveling at a statue of Zeus without wishing its destruction.

We are nothing like the Taliban bombing the Buddhist Statues. It was a very silly point of that gentleman to make and he was rightfully Hitchslapped.

  • Once again, he outwits them all.

  • @tpstrat14 I can confidently say, you don't listen to anything.

  • @tpstrat14 You obviously don't know anything about hitchens.

  • @tpstrat14 hitchens doesn't know about religion? bah, i am almost certain that you are lying about being atheist because atheist usually know more about religion then the religious and can see that hitchens has a great knowlege of religion and we all know why people beleive these things, fear and egotism, its that simple, there is no evidence, no reason, no logic, NOTHING but fear of hell and egotism saying that we are the center of the universe

  • LOL Look at that guy on the far left of the table. Carrot top LOL

  • @xn117 No, he looks more like Dr Zayus from Planet Of The Apes to me!!!

  • Thane Rosenbaum is literally an idiot, "Monty Python-esque" just made me want to hit him. And he's always articulate, what is he on about. He's got a stupid face has Thane.

  • without religion what will fill the space? What will people gravitate towards? what will give people the consolation and ideals that religion dictate? The unenlighten require cruches, require beliefs, require answeres, require doctrine, require dogma etc. why? simply because that is how the ego operates. Stop doing ego (as it is an activity and not an entity, and relalize that Place that is Unconditional and Untainted. Realize Real God, that State that isn't owned by anyone. be realized

  • Little axes should now be called Hitchets

  • Hitchens is an intellectual brute, and I love him for it. Sometimes, though, he displays a somewhat unhealthy fondness of bickering. I assume his ego has its own gravity field, an assumption he substantiates often by forgoing a debate's current topic entirely in favor of a tirade directed at his adversary.

In other words, his agenda sometimes becomes personal satisfaction, when it ought to be the promotion of atheism and anti-theism as hallmarks of the intelligent, altruistic and educated.

  • Oh god, this video is so classic. one of the funniest moments of Hitchens EVER!

  • I really haven't seen anyone who is capable of arguing with Hitchens. It seems so unfair at times. However, Hitchens is not that great of philosopher, makes really good points but still not that great of a philosopher.

  • @Achilles9924 He is a historian. You don't have to be a philosopher to be an atheist.

  • @dhjn4214 Its not about having anything to lose. It's not about what happens in death and beyond. It's about what we're doing, here, right now and in the future, as a human race. If you believe whatever it is you believe, personally, then by all means, enjoy yourself. I'm happy for you. The problem comes when it protrudes outward from personal belief to political statements and the like, which influence other people's lives.

Hate him or not, he knows his shit. Can't hate a man for being smart.

  • Note, as always, he uses ridicule and plays to his audience. But I wouldn’t go as far to say that he's a good vaudevillian.

  • @SenorZorrozzz

Hitchens is smarter and more knowledgeable than 5 generations of your family combined .... if we could find someone in your family that could actually add.

  • @MISTERWHITE111 LOL! Not too bright...

  • Hitchens: It’s an act. The sloppy, Scotch soaked intellectual writer…please! He's a wannabe!

He's just a rebellious, immature dolt who plays to college audiences and meetings like this; where such views make you their darling! Oh how easy....

  • Hey I'm not righteous by any means nor am I a great christian unfortunately. But, I have to say people that you have nothing to lose if you accept jesus christ as a savior. I sometimes doubt just like any of you. But, I know that whenever I struggle, God always penetrates my soul and gives me this joy in my heart. Just one step at a time...my friend you could do this. Your life is not yours. Don't be fooled by what the media says or this world says. Jesus is the king of all kings. I promise you.

  • @dhjn4214 sooo..... my life is mine, or is it jesus´?

  • @dhjn4214

Ow...that is a very couragous statement that my life is not mine. Very interesting, do you have any evidence for that?

  • @dhjn4214 Time, money, freedom, and hope.. four kinda important things that the clergy, church, and prayer steals from you with lies and false promises.

Donate if you will, but know that pedophiles are being paid elsewhere by your generosity in church. Spend your time there if you will, but know you could be helping with making progress in the world instead. Pray all you want, but know that even the most often and widely-prayed-for is void and absent ; peace on this earth.

  • Damn he is badass.

  • Saint Thomas Aquinas is the reincarnation of Aristotle.

  • In response to Kirsch, I would agree that religion is indeed part of our culture. So is Santa Claus, but at least with Santa, we need not worry about him commanding his followers to intolerance or violent acts. I don't want to eradicate religion from our culture, or burn the churches down, but I would be happier if it were taken no more seriously than Santa Claus.

  • Hitch-pwn

  • 1:35

haha, you need to know your shit if you want to debate hitchens

  • Thanks for making a channel of Hitchen's work , love it

  • what difference that it makes? both are the same!!

  • which word came first, religion or myth ?

  • many, if not all, early mesoamerican civilizations used human sacrifice as offerings to their god(s), and it was a very intrinsic part of their "culture", but that damn sure doesn't mean it's was right.

  • "Jolly silly point"

    Made my day

  • We're in 100% agreement. Only thing is it needs to be done in a way people don't think it's just some joke. (Which it kinda would be)

I mean I have visual evidence, not just a book. I think God put those images in the head of the prophet George Lucus. No one can make that up by "acciedent and have so many fa~ errr, followers.

The Force always was and always will be, therefore it is the universe. I must be on as solid grounds as Mormans and scientologist to start.

  • lairdhiggins , That's a great quote, problem is, I like to tell people to qoute

    Lord of the Rings.

Can I have the Force and Yoda?

  • 'The Force' and the Jedi Order would be a great example to showcase the mockery that is religion especially when you consider that 'Jedi' (according to the 2001 UK census) 390,000 Britons (*) class their religious belief as Jedi causing it to become an officially recognised religion.

    * according to the BBC

  • Only if I can get a lightsaber.

  • I think it's truly laughable when 'theists' (as not to discriminate purely against Christians) try to quote scripture to prove a point. Scripture IS NOT fact that's why it's called 'faith'. You might as well quote Lord of the Rings.

  • Good word, brethren in Reason.

  • I see the inhabitants of hell had their little gafaw meeting.

"There will be weeping and knashing of teeth." Jesus Christ.

"Every knee will bow and ackowledge that Jesus Christ IS LORD to the Glory of God the Father."

That includes every atheist and all who attended this incredibly naive "meeting."

  • careful, everyone! people who wrote about jesus said that jesus predicted things that haven't happened yet! weird, too, that jesus is described as a peaceful guy and a forebear of "knashing (sic) of teeth" on the same board. seems contradictory to logic, but then, it's religion; sort of keeps with the theme, really.

also, if you're going to quote jesus, you'd think that you'd spell the goddamn words correctly. i mean, it's holy writ. you gave the people who think you're a moron more evidence.

  • Of COURSE God is the 'enemy of society!"

The world is at war with The Lord and I have news for you Who wins.

"Fear Him that has the power to cast into hell, yes I tell you, fear Him!" Jesus Christ.

    Bitter pill for atheists.

  • You the man Hitch

  • Awesome stuff.

That comment by the beardo was really stupid and deserved the verbal volley it received.

  • Wow, I very rarely laugh out loud, but this one was good.

It's almost gay how much I love this guy.

  • SAME here.

  • @asheradensein

This is the best comment on Youtube ever.

  • @asheradensein it's not gay. Society has just told you what is gay and what is not...

hahaha just fucking you.. but not in a gay way..

  • Brilliant!

Truly a smackdown as only Hitchens can deliver them!

  • Awesome.

    Thanks hitchenschannel.

  • Love the Hitch.

  • "Hitchens vast ignorance of religion. "

    This from a fucking Mormon?

A person has to be *insane* to believe that baloney. Smith was nothing more than a con-artist and you are the victim. Mormons are right along with Scientology in the crazy department.

  • This from a fool that believes in magic underwear? lol

Listen. Your religious choice is even more *nut case* than the rest. You are right up there with Scientology. Yours created by a con-artist and the later by a science fiction writer. Its comical the adult humans can believe this stuff. Laughable in the extreme.

  • Mormons don't believe in magic underwear. Only an idiot would believe that.

  • Its hard to tell what a Mormon might or might now believe. After all you believe Joseph Smith found some gold plates that later flew back up to heaven. If you could believe that you could believe *anything*. Did he really have spectacles made of two stones? LOL

  • sads,

Oh that hurt! I'm cut to the quick on that one! Keep trying though. If you actually educated yourself you might not make all these blunders. Three strikes again, and all in one small post. No wonder you like Hitchens so much. You don't get anything right about Mormons. That's okay, you're still young. There is a cure.

  • Jack

I Don't need to keep trying. You are a Mormon. That says it all. :-)

  • sads,

DING DING! You finally got one right! Well... half-right anyway. That first sentence needs some work, but at least that's an improvement.

  • Jack;

The last laugh is always best. You are a Mormon! :-)

  • Unfortunately, the "last laugh" will be tears.

  • are you wearing your magic underwear?

    BAHAHAHAHAHAHA... mormons are teh funneh

  • Mormons don't have magic underwear. No wonder you're a fan of Hitchens. You'll believe any nonsense and deny the truth.

  • im sorry, you may think its some poetic spiritual garment.

but to me its a pair of magic underwear worn by scared, gullible rubes.

  • So YOU believe it's magical but the Mormons don't. Got it.

Really, with that kind of thinking, who's the rube?

  • yeah, what kind of thinking. im not the rube by the way, i dont believe in supernatural underwear, you do. your the mormon remember.

that a pair of fucking underwear can protect you, jesus christ monkey balls. as the person before said, if you can believe that, you can believe anything.

imagine if joseph smith had stwitched fairy tales and told everyone that mystical socks should be worn by all followers, i think we both know what you would be wearing right now, rube.

  • Oh im sorry, i misunderstood. They arent magical, they just help ward off evil forces, how silly of me. For a moment there i thought you guys were plain crazy.

Now it makes perfect sense, so tell me how they work? something to do with the stitching? if you wear a tin foil hat at the same time will that give you extra protection against psychic mind rays?

  • so for the record, these undergarments are just for tradtion and are otherwise completely useless? is that what your saying?

  • Post a link or it didn't happen

  • Everyone gave me a thumbs down and didn't even look into it. That tells me you all aren't really looking for the truth.

Look it up yourself. It's a six-part video called "God and Mr. Hitchens".

LOL! That this guy is revered by you all doesn't say much for you.

  • Attacking someone without right of reply by listing the faults in other people with tenuous links is hardly brave.

  • @JackNimbleBrain61 - A phony like you who has no credibility, coming to this channel and posting nonsense garbage that emanates from your lack of understanding of the English language to begin with and ends with your total and utter ignorance (resulting in a few incoherent posts) deserves nothing but a thumbs down. You have made a total ass of yourself and you don't even realize it? What a chutzpah...

  • @siyengarputz - I'm not a phony. I just thought you might want to see just how ignorant your hero actually is. If you don't want to watch those videos and keep your head in the sand, you're more than welcome to remain willfully ignorant. You may go back to your hero-worship now. Thank you for playing.

  • Slaughter...

  • pretty twatty

  • It looks like Jonathan Kirsch made a straw man, or he feels that "faith" is faking knowledge. Religion and Christianity especially is more than just culture, especially when immaculate conceptions, virgin births, rising from the dead, talking to ghost are brought into the picture. The bible doesn't explicitly state that it's just a way to do things but isn't actually the 100% truth. The bible does not say it's metaphors and a good framework so long as you take the bad parts less seriously.

  • Hitchslapped

  • @rmeddy1 Hitchslapped. I love it. Yay rmeddy1. I hope you don't mind if I use it :)

  • I'd like to travel around with Hitchens and after he intellectually beats these people I'd like to physically slap the shit out of them.

  • ROFL! I love it when Hicthens brings home the reality!

  • Thane Rosenbaum is a twat.

  • yup he is

  • yep, twat.

  • twatlike
