I did a little maths, using information obtained from elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/ and found out that War Axes apparently do most damage, followed closely by Swords, and last and clearly least Maces. I had to use the Oblivion speeds, and I used the skyrim damages. I couldn't use base damage, as they were all too similar, so I used them from the images above the base damage.

just saying you are doin it wrong - particularly wit your skills. you need to upgrade your one hand damage more. i got it at 40% increase right now doing over 30 damage a hit (with a 1h mace)

You're right, the trade off is maneuvering and staggering.

Heavy weapons make you move slower when they are drawn, so the sword lets you be more agile and dodge things.

Light weapons don't do as much damage per hit, which results in fewer staggers(knockback animations) Use maces to force your enemies to the ground for a few seconds.

Axes are the middle road.

Hey darnoc on your question I was thinking the same thing but I was wrong the war axes are the weakest weapon category because they do little damage and take a long time to swing. The best weapon that you could have is the daedric sword because it swings the fastest out of all the weapons in the game except daggers and does the most damage.hoped this help if anyone needs more advise just message me.

idk about u darnoc but i personally prefer swords for the faster speed because my way of thinking is more hits = higher chance to deal a critical but then again a mace ignores def with ur perk and thats more solid damage as opposed to a chance at a critical guess it really all comes down to preference

I do not consider the following a cheating play style. I cleared out a dwarf dungeon of all the dewemer metal and made dewemer ingots. Got 400+ ingots. I mined a bunch of iron and bought the rest to make over 200 Dewemer Bows. The process got me to level 100 in smithing. Then I enchanted all of those bows with the cheap soul gems. Got my enchantment up to 85. Sold everything and made dragon armor. When I started this process I was level 22 end was level 36. Now I am a rich man 20,000+ gold.

Darnoc the Questy altar you saw is actually kind of cool. the masks the guys that are sometimes protecting word walls are wearing are actually placed on that altar and ther is another mask(wooden) which changes the area. and i havnt done it yet but i believe it may hav something eextremly awsome about it

Yeah Darnoc that area at the start is for the college of Winterhold questline. (Sort of spoilers next so if you dont want to have the quest spoiled slightly do not read on) inside the ruins there is the dragon presit Morekei or some thing like that and his mask lets you regenerate magika 100% faster and where you said " this area looks questy" the wooden mask is in there next to the skeleton which is for once you have all the dragon preist masks because it telleports you to a certain area.

Even though the mage in the tavern says that the Black Azura Star can only hold black souls, a glitch allows all souls to be able to enter. Personally, I would choose to have only black souls anyway if it was only black souls and go ahead and kill some bandits. Black souls are also grand souls and are awesome for enchantments.
