They are in the ring of fire, one of the most volcano and earthquake prone regions on the entire PLANET. Japan is RIGHT ON THE RIM. Earthquakes are natural, and while I'm sure man may be able to cause them, this one has been a long time coming.

@Thakrulll ... I heard one report saying the captain had been drinking. Don't know if that's true or not. It certainly was a navigation failure, as the reef is marked on nautical charts. That reef top must be very close to sea level, as I could see it being exposed as the waves washed over it. Perhaps NZ ought to also put a light station on it to mark it and warn mariners to try to prevent this from happening again if possible.

@Thakrulll ... They're supposed to. But either they didn't, or they incorrectly determined their position? But in these days of GPS accuracy, how could you be so off? There will be an inquest.
