I'm gonna stock up on a bunch of these for the zombie apocalypse. They are creepy as fuck but I'll own all the electric companies when the grid goes down and I'll have the cheapest workers around! ELECTRIC EELS! >:]
If that tank were properly decorated that eel would be quite happy in there... you need foregrounad and background plants to block the glass so he feels he's in a stream. you should get a larger tank
@Coeyzorz They have a type of nerve ending that charges and stores electricty. All fish have the ability to use their electromagnetic field to hunt and to feel other things in the water. However, the Electric eel lives in murky waters in South America where there is almost no visibility so the fish have very poor eyesight, but use their electromagnetic field to find their way, catch food, and shock predators. Electric eels have killed ppl, but mainly their electricty is used to stun caimans
If that tank were properly decorated that eel would be quite happy in there... you need foregrounad and background plants to block the glass so he feels he's in a stream. I believe these guys are used to being in narrow places...
@SpitRhyma For a lot of fish you would be right, but some like electric eels and lungfish don't care if they have rocks or plants. In the wild they live in dark muddy water and have very bad eyesight. They can realy only see light and dark with almost no detail. As for plants, most would root them-up or eat them. They really are not skiddish and don't hide. And yea, they are used to being in water that is either flooding or drying up, so being in a small undecorated tank really don't matter much
@ginko27 that's completely incorrect. it may not be the difference between life and death but the eel ESPECIALLY (more so than most fish) would prefer a thin place to stick itself for cover. you can argue your oppinion when the argument is over a matter of oppinion... this is a matter of evolution. that's not oppinion that's fact. sorry you don't win a prize for your bizarre guess.
@SpitRhyma Well, my oppinion is my 25yrs of research on the EVOLUTION of the electric eel, African, South American Lungfish. I have kept these fish for years in planted XXL aquaruims and the fish had trouble eating. In smaller less ornimintal tanks they thrived, as a matter of fact I own the oldest African lungfish in captivity (30+yrs now). I think you may be correct assuming these fish came from the wild recently, but in captivity they simply do not care what's in the tank unless it's food
@ginko27 Lastly, if I came off rude I do appoligise, but every time I watch a vid of a fish there is always someone complaining about the size of the tank. Some ppl would only be happy if the tank was the size of a lake. I do understand why most ppl think this way. I used to untill I worked with them for so long and gave them a choice of a well planted large tank on one side or a small slim unplanted tank on the other side, most fish chose the big side but some (eels and lugfish) did not.
I was touched by a "Temblador" (electric fresh water eel) in a amazonian river..... that is not funny, you feel dizzy and for a few seconds... you cant even see, cant figure out what happened... that is an awful sensation, thanks god it was not in the deep part of that river, was in the shore.
omazinger, electric eels could end the discussions about cruelty of death penalty in the US. These animals are well known, being masters in the high art of painless electrocution: Just place a condammned inmate in an aquarium with 5 (or so) domesticized electric eels and they will do a smart job when the warden gives them the command. However lovers of the electric chair's spark-and-smoke scene must be disappointed: The animals leave out this part of the performance - to save energy.
If an electric eel decided to to kill you, I don't think, you will realize what happens to you. Remember, eels use 25...30Hz - instead of 60Hz used by the electric chair. That lower frequency is much more efficient to cause unconciousness and stop the heart; what means, 0.8...1 amps @ 600...850 volts are enough (4...12 amps @ 1750...2000 volts are used in the chair). However, if an eel just wants you to chase away, then it can become a rather painfull experience, since it uses low current.
You take the battery out of the eel (If you can), put it in your MP3 or whatever and listen to music while you clean it... (be sure to take the water out first.
you buy a top of the line cansister filter top of the line live rock live sand and the best bottom feeder you can get your hand on and pray you dont have to clean it. Our the normal people take it out of the tank and put it into another one until cleaning finished
its not a water cat at all - it actually is infact an electric eel - these fish can produce up to 500V of electricity to stun fish/prey within range and eat them whilst they're unconcious - lovely fish, wouldnt want one on the end of my line though!
