  • I am not a dSLR owner yet, but since the 550D has no autofocus, you have to constantly adjust the lens manually for focusing, correct? I am looking to get a video capable SLR but starting out I'd have a lot of problems w/out an autofocus during video.

  • I use my sony a55 for filming with no problem :D Its how you work around its limitation -_-

  • I see jealous Canon fanboys come here (possibly using multiple accounts per person), and pretend their Canon is soooo much better.

But the fact remains, that the Sony does video with auto focus. Canon fanboys are so jealous of that. They can't stand it.

Plus picture quality of the Canon isn't earth shattering compared to the Sony at all.

Sony has the upper hand, clearly.

  • SO If I get a different lens for the canon I can turn on auto focus?

  • @Madblaster89 no.

  • I bought the a33, Im new at filming so the auto focus sounded nice, how ever is there any way I can turn it off? and also, what settings is the best for recording, is it Auto or can I experiment in som way?

pleas help me some one :)

  • After a year using the Sony A33.... Don't buy it! The 550D is faaar superior...

  • Canon is by far the superior choice when it comes to both video and photographic aspirations. Also, you can usually judge a camera by its resale value...Sony doesn't get nearly what a Canon will get..(% of original cost)..

  • great comparison man. very informative video

  • Verry good versus Andy. Thank you for your effort.

  • Canon t2i is better all the way i know I havehave one

  • equal on video quality?what the hell....Im sure he's having a hard time trying to focus on his desired subject using his CANON 550d...i think SONY deserved to WIN.....

  • i think SONY wins on this matched...video image quality SONY rocks.....check the video on 9:25 ....

  • Comment removed

  • Is there a time limit when recording videos on the t2i and if so what is it? If there is can i record one one card and keep switching to different cards to record longer?

  • When it comes to lenses - how is it that you didn't even mention the A-Mount lenses made for Minolta? You can use all of them with A33. The choice is broader for A33, so why "WIN" for Canon?

  • canon rocks

  • FAAAAACK should have bought the 550d...... fuck me, the slow mo is really bad on the a33...

  • @rillesnille yeah but the screen obviosly murdered the t2i - but then i would still have the t2i

  • @MegaLimera1n How? Its a nice full size.

  • @rillesnille Ha, I bought the 550D

  • Excellent review, thank you so much, you answered all my questions and freed my mind. Again, Thank you.

  • A33 sucked on 9:18

  • I bought Sony A33 Camera because its way to easy to shoot video with AF. Canon must so terrible to AF all the time because it has MF. Sony A33 also small handy and it has variable angle LCD. Canon is better for photo but not for video. I dont understand how Canon users MF all the time when they shoot a video. Sony A33 if you are gonna shoot video, Canon if you are gonna take photos.

  • @Lucip11 Your "Canon must be so terrible at shooting video because it has MF" is ludicrous, unless you mean general purpose video. If for stuff like film making, ALL FOCUS IS MANUAL TO ENSURE PERFECT FOCUS. What self respecting filmmaker would use auto focus when shooting a film, seriously. Just as no filmmaker would use full auto on their camera.

  • @DeathKnight725 I agree with you all the way. Nobody I know in film making uses autofocus when recording video, its retarded, and it hardly ever works properly, the lens we constantly lose and regain focus. MF is the only way to ensure perfect focus, and the idiots like him who don't like MF just don't know how to use it, or they are too lazy and fat to pick up there left hand to turn the focus ring. I own A Canon Rebel T2I, and I couldn't be happier with it. Nothing competes for the price range

  • @Lucip11 I don't know a single person who doesn't use MF when shooting in video, the fact that you picked the Sony for that reason, is just plain stupid. AF is completely useless and unreliable in video mode, the only way to achieve perfect focus is MF, and with af you won't be able to get the proper depth of field in any situation. I guess AF would be ok if your shooting mediocre home videos, but any professional videographer will tell you they never use AF only MF.

  • @Lucip11 omg ur so stupid. the autofocus sucks. canon is better thats why alot of filmmakers on youtube use canon and i think um zero use sony dslrs for filming

  • @ConnorSelby Yeah you right but u must understand how difficult for normal people ( not professional like you ). Older people, kids, housewife how can they MF all the time? You are only thinking about professional photographer who would use this camera but they lot more people use who is not professional. Its easy, handy, light and it has brand new mirror system. Sony just announced New A77 and i know many photographers want to change their gear from Canon to Sony.

  • @Lucip11 in that case yeah the sony rocks but this argument is about filmmaking. and im not even in the slightest bit iggnorant nor imature.

  • Also Sony A33 is not professional camera remember that. You are maybe so smart guy i don't know but you seem really immature and ignorant. This camera works good for me probably not for you. Actually did not even touch this camera and how do you its sucks?

  • @Lucip11 Sorry about my bad English.

  • great review, now I've made my decision ! thanks ! ;)

  • @maddoxkiddo which one you have chosen? i'm still not sure

  • @MrDasjoerd I've chosen the Canon because I want a good camera for photos but I also want the good video features, and that means the manual control and focus of canon's. I thnik both have great features but I thnik the Canon let you be more involved with what you are creating.

My doubts were in the features in the video mode of the Sony, and I think I prefer the canon controls and audio quality over the speed, effects and autofocus of Sony.

    :D

  • I've been using the A33 for like half a year and I'm satisfied with its allround capacities, BUT the lack of frames when shooting video gets pretty frustrating. At the question about lenses Sony is actually catching up and if you search you'll find lenses that cover your needs, even thoug it's easier to find lenses to 550d at this point.. Anyhow, great review, you cover pretty much everything a newbie would like to know. If someone would like some A33 footage, check out my channel!

  • Nice review! Thank you!

  • Thank you. Excellent review. I will have to shoot tango dancers in quite low level conditions. Do you think the A33 could follow these dancers without jumping from one couple to another. I tried with Canon but it is almost impossible to keep focus.

  • i still cant choose!! argggg

  • Perfect review! Thanks

  • Very nicely done review!

  • I must say this is a very orginal review.

Can You please give me the name of the music by the end ?

  • The background noises while capturing sound really bad. They are much more annoying than the hearable AF, I think. I do want this camera, but that loud and disturbing static noise keeps me away from buying the A33. What's the sense of gorgeous Full HD filming when the audio quality is that bad?

I currently have a Panasonic TZ-7, compact camera, and its audio track is free of any background noise...

  • Dammit I meant IS...

  • Correction: the T2i's stock lenses have af buillt in

  • @BoxxyFan IS is built in on the Canon T2i and also it will last a lot longer because it doesn't use a 'like.no.other' SLT system. The SLT mirror will last about 2 and a half years at the most and cause your images to be grainy. I am not a huge Canon fan myself and am thinking of buying a Nikon over the t2i. Photography is my passion and I want my camera to last me a lot longer than 2 and a half years. Don't you?

  • @unir00 bear in mind the a33/a55 is a slt camera NOT a DSLR. Slts don't last that long if you don't believe me google it

  • I'm a Canon user for many years, but this «test» is a joke.

I just tested both cameras (A55 Vs EOS 550D) and the Sony is far better in many aspect (pro like). Total control through the EVF: WB in °Kelvins w/wo bracketing, AdobeRGB, superb colour, in-body stabilization, HDR, 3D, extended flash feat. such as: High Speed Sync, Rear Curtain, Fill-in, Wireless, 10 fp/s..

So I don't want to switch because I don't want to sell all my lenses.

But WOW, I will confirm that Sony is on top, now.

    Mitch

  • @unir00 You do realize this is not a test of the A55, but the A33? Slight difference there.

  • @NightsirK Except 7 fp/sec VS 10 fp/sec, no noticable difference between A33 VS A55.

@ nidschki, you have mini-jack for external microphones like a pro camera (of course not symetric but for that price...), so what is a problem? You can use dedicated microphones for video and plugin-it on top of camera using the flash grip.

@ reddragon9918 well, the only difference is -1/3 of IL due to the translucent mirror, what else? The A33/A55 can feet every need, not problem of that.

  • @unir00 Yeah thats what i was thinking. Canon is just terrible for shooting video.

  • are there full manual options on the sony a55?

  • Well it's clear that Sony is better.

  • @BoxxyFan Yeah, it lacks progressive full HD, slow motion in 720p, as wide a selection of lenses, mic input, manual video controls. That makes it so much better right? Oh wait, no it doesn't.

  • @editedbyfailure Sorry mate. Canon is for amateur/beginners only. Don't get me wrong, the canon is an okay choice, but Sony has more advanced features such as an EVF (live histogram) and actual in body stabilization (not the more restricted in lens stabilization).

  • @BoxxyFan An EVF is a step backwards. They are terrible, and I know because I have used an a33/a55. A fucking passenger information display on a train has more pixels than it. In body stabilisation is great but it means if you're shooting a telephoto through an optical viewfinder then it's all shaky and oh no you can't actually compose. Of course, you could come back and say "oh but it's not optical it's electronic" well yes, but I actually enjoy being able to see what i'm taking photos of.

  • @editedbyfailure EVF's will always be better than an OVF. They will only improve as technology gets better, OVF's fail because you can't have live histograms or data overlaid on them. Name a Canon prime lens which has image stabilization. Oh wait, there are none. Sony has a 20/2.8, 28/2.8, 30/2.8 Macro, 35/1.8, 50/1.8, 85/2.8 plus Carl Zeiss 24/2, 85/1.4, 135/2 plus Minolta 100/2, 35/2, 135/2.8 and 135/2.8 STF. Canon = None lol. Sucks to be a prime shooter if you're with Canon!

  • @BoxxyFan How are they better? Do you enjoy looking at a tiny, colour shifted LCD? I don't. With an OVF, the battery isn't drained by looking through it. So that's a +1 to them. None of those lenses have IS you tool. The cameras they are attached to have sensor shift, but the lenses don't.

    On the topic of primes with IS, canon have the 300mm f/4, 300mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, 400mm f/4 DO, 500mm f/4, 600mm f/4, 800mm f/5.6, 200mm f/2, 100mm f/2.8 Macro.

    Canon = 9 Sony = none lol.

  • @editedbyfailure Aw, poor baby cant afford extra $10 batteries? Yep, but shooting with Sony I can get image stabilized stills and videos with actual handy ultrawide/wide/normal/portrait primes. With Canon, you can't. But phew, good thing Canons shortest prime that can shoot with IS is a 300mm f/4. That'll be really handy when taking a video at your kids bday party... if you're standing several blocks away lol. Must weigh a tonne too. Sony lens selection is better for actual real world use!

  • @BoxxyFan Don't you mean 100mm? But yeah, they also have a shitload of normal zooms with IS... 24-105 f/4L, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS (kit lens), 18-135mm IS, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 55-250mm IS, 70-200 f/4 IS etc etc

  • @editedbyfailure Zooms are crap. They're too slow. You're limited to f/2.8 as the fastest and most of them are like f/4. Have you ever shot video with an image stabilized Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 or 135mm f/2. The shallow DOF with IS is something Canon can never give you. Sony > Canon. Only get a Canon if you want less options.

  • @BoxxyFan hahahahahahahaahahahahahahahhahaahahahaha you said canon and less options in the same sentence. Maybe I like to plug a mic in? Oh yeah, 550D has a mic socket. f/2.8 is more than enough, you don't shoot f/1.4 or f/2 primes wide open. Also, name an image stabilised prime they use on ARRIFLEX cameras. I'll give you all the time you need to google what that is before you get back to me.

  • @editedbyfailure You don't shoot f/1.4 or f/2 wide open? Okay, you clearly don't know anything about cameras LOL. I guess you don't know how amazingly razor sharp the Carl Zeiss 24/2, 85/1.4 and 135/2 are. I feel sorry for you. Enjoy your Canon with IS lenses but slow maximum aperatures. If you're limited to f/4 you might as well just get a shitty micro four third camera! It'll give the same DOF BAHAHAHAAA

  • @BoxxyFan You probably don't either. 24mm f/2 Distagon T* = $1250. I could buy Zeiss glass for Canon EOS mount easily. I could also get a PL=EOS adapter and fit fucking Zeiss cine lenses onto my 550D (if I had cash flowing from every orifice). You're acting like Carl Zeiss glass is sony-exclusive, which it is not.

  • @editedbyfailure Ah, but you see, Carl Zeiss glass with image stabilization for handheld videos is Sony exclusive. Oh wait, are you going to magically take the IS out of your Canon kit lens and stick it on a Carl Zeiss cine lens? haha, good luck with that. Canon FAIL!

  • @BoxxyFan ARRI fail! fucking idiot.

  • @BoxxyFan I suppose we should just agree to disagree. I'm gonna relax with my HQ video and audio. And when you google DSLR video, you don't see a single Sony DSLR.

Yeah, i'm going to sit down knowing i'm correct and you've got your head so far up your own arsehole you can't realise you're wrong.

  • @editedbyfailure And I'm going to sit back and relax with my a55 and Carl Zeiss 85/1.4 with IS knowing that I can shoot some very creative portrait videos handheld in a VERY compact body through my EVF with an actual live histogram. Enjoy you're shitty entry level Canon with you're very slow low quality glass kit lens with IS stuck inside your lens. Bahahahahahaha! Oh yeah and don't get me started on still photos (a55 can do 10fps, 550D can only do.... like 3fps LOL) Y u so mad bro?

  • @BoxxyFan Pellicle mirror. Been around since late 80s on the old Canon 1N camera. Your a55 is still entry level by the way. AND THE 85MM F/1.4 IS NOT FUCKING KIT GLASS! ARE YOU SAYING WE AREN'T GOING TO BUY MORE GLASS? FUCKING IDIOT. I doubt you use a $1400 lens on your camera. I bet you don't even use an a55.

Anyway, off to shoot a film using two 550Ds, bye

  • @editedbyfailure Can Canon even make a digital pellicle mirror? Good thing Sony did it first ;) Oh right, sorry I forgot to take into account you can buy more glass. Because you're going to buy some image stabilized primes for your Canon? LOL SHAME YOU CANT DO THAT. Now you're not even making sense. Are all Canon users such idiots? haha

  • @BoxxyFan Now you also mention histograms. The 550D actually has a live histogram on the LCD when in live view. Saying it's for "amateur/beginners only" when the A33 has gimmicky autofocus is dead rich.

  • @editedbyfailure only on the LCD? lol, fail!

  • @BoxxyFan you're acting like people film on DSLRs using the viewfinder.

  • @editedbyfailure Well that is how professionals film video. See: img825.imageshack.us/img825/1373/janbdo.jpg Wait, can you even record videos through the viewfinder with the Canon? You can't! Haha, thats hilarious! Another reason why the Sony is the better choice.

  • @BoxxyFan 404 not found. Actual professionals (not idiots with DVCAM camcorders) who make movies use external LCD monitors. On shoulder mount cameras, there is no option but to use viewfinders (viewfinder attachments are available for the 550D) but if you're serious about DSLR video you will be using a rig of some sort with a follow focus, decent primes and external LCD.

  • @editedbyfailure Um no, professionals also use EVFs. Google video cameraman you moron. Also the Sony has a 5" external LCD (CLM-V55 look it up) specifically for their DSLRs that you can hook up. Does Canon even have anything like that? LOL. Plus actually image stabilized primes that can be used for still/videos which aren't limited to 300/4 being the shortest LOL.

  • @BoxxyFan Yes, they do and there are adapters. Google DSLR rig you fucking cretin. lx470.ru/img/2a/2a9/DSLR_Rig_Gear_for_Video_Production_Filmmaking.jpg there you go.

    And your primes aren't IS!

What the hell do you smoke, i need some of that shit. And as said before, shit loads of normal fast zooms etc

  • @editedbyfailure f/2.8 is slow as hell and will not give you as much DOF as a f/1.4. If you want the best control for shallow DOF with IS for all the creative possibilities, Sony is your best choice. Yes, Sony's primes can shoot with IS enabled because it's built into the body. With Canon's primes YOU CANT DO THAT. EVER. LOL. There is simply no option. Unless you stick that shitty Canon lens on a Sony a55 ;)

  • @BoxxyFan Oh you just dissed canon glass. That's why all the canon shooters are flocking over to Sony.

    OH WAIT, THEY'RE NOT.

  • Can you manually focus while filming using the A33?

  • @TheBierwas Yeah it's really easy to just set it to manual mode.

  • @TheBierwas

im pretty sure you can, theres a manual focus option on the lens

  • Wonderfull review!!!

  • VERY good but canon ...

  • This is the best review I have ever seen! Thank you so much for your information and advice! I really appreciate it!

  • Very nice review !

  • thanks that was helpful

  • So with the Sony A33 you can not do slow motion?

  • And thats a bit strange because we have normal size hands. xD

  • I do not agree with 'camera grip and size' and 'lenses'.

Sony is definitely better to my hands. I have small hands, I'm a girl, I prefer a lighter camera. In my opinion it shouldn't be taken into account during the test. This is a very subjective feeling.

Variety of Sony lenses is as big as Canon. You can choose between Sony and Minolta, which gives a wide range of lenses.

  • @notursweetie Anyway, thanks for the review! I'm thinking about Sony A33 or A580. I have the A900, which I use for fashion photoshoots. I need a small camera with HD movies... Just for holidays, trips and personal videos. Your review is really helpful.

  • What an accent... :)

  • would a33 be good to film skating?

  • @craigers459 it would be much much better than the canon 550d since the sony has autofocus, and you wont be able to manually focus fast skaters..

  • @kemenyadi Very true im thinkin of getting it, my mom has older minolta lenses so that safe me a lot of money on lenses then and its cheaper to.

  • @craigers459 I say go for it :)

  • Thank you very very much for your video. It's an excellent review ;) I'm having the a33 already haha.

    God bless.

  • Th mic on th a33 sucks compared to the t2i...

  • @XxHardcorexxGamerxX yahh but who uses the onboard mic anyways

  • @XxHardcorexxGamerxX they both suck

  • Excellent demonstration!

  • That's your opinion still! most people enjoy 24fps for movies and 60i/p for home video. And that doesn't give Sony an advantage anyway.

  • @jotkeycom I really miss the pure liquid silky smooth action of 60p from the camcorder.

Anything large moving around or panning looks terrible both on 24 or 30.

At least the Canon had 720/60p, *and* that digital crop zoom thing which was really great.

Really too bad about the missing AF, just didn't like the idea of never being able to pass the camera to someone else so that *I* would appear in any home videos. All that manual focus too away way too much concentration.

  • THANX!! thiis video was veryvery helpfull!!

    Great video!!

  • Alpha or EOS, it doesn't matter, what matter is how can you manage the focus, which I prefer MF because it has more focus advantages than AF, for an example; focus at something YOU want to focus on, despite the need to 100% focus on something, & more realistic when you MF while shaking the camera a liiiiiiiiittle bet in lots of cases.

AF on Video mode is recommended when you want to shoot on something that moves only.

  • the grip are for asians..lol

  • Denne reviewen hjalp meg mye, fordi jeg lurte på hvem kamera jeg skulle kjøpe.

    Takk! :)

  • I have seen videos on here of some using the Sony a55 with a 200mm to 300mm zoom lens and the the pictures and videos they capture is amazing! I first was thinking of getting the D7000 from nikon but now after seeing what the Sony a55 can do I just might get the Sony a55 instead for my first digital camera.

  • Hello everybody.............perfect review. Anyway, I am decide to buy one of those two cameras for video shooting weddings and probably I will buy SONY. A reason is because SONY has AF and CANON no ! This a big advantage for cameraman ! And SONY had better colors than CANON. Its true that SONY had worse sound, but anyway I wanna buy ext. mic. IN SONY I see a big disadvantage that if you shoot video and you have stabilization on, than you can only 9 min shoot in lenght, but I speak about A55.

  • So, I had a Canon EOS550D and last week I buoght a Sony SLT A33. My experience is worse with SonyA33 , the quick AF sometimes unnecessary, always f3,5 at video mode is a wrong solution ( sometimes need any depth of field ) and the interlaced video at 1920x1080. Much more better Canon's progressiv video.

  • wow this comparison is completely useless. This would be more accurate if they compared the a55 intead of its little brother the a33. The canon is priced about 1200.00 and the sony a33 is priced at 699.00 almost half. You need to compare a better model to the cannon. Such a weird comparison.

  • Comment removed

  • @jotkeycom sony website 650.00 cannon website (per you) 900.00 a 250.00 difference. I can buy a PLAYSTATION 3 with that difference. A huge difference in competition. Again completly wrong comparisons. Compare apples to apples.

  • @raygreene the sony website says 799.99 for the t2i with kit lens. And you can get them way cheaper on other retail outlets. I got mine for $718.00 with kit lens and with tax and shipping included.

  • @jotkeycom Where did you buy it?

  • @ee95ee I got mine from a place called Central Digital online. I don't know if that place is still around, but you can still find these cameras for less than $800.00. Just do a froogle search.

  • @jotkeycom Thanks;)

  • Fantastisk "review"!

  • What a nice review! You did that very well. I'm glad I bought the Canon 550D :D

  • Only thing you didn't realize is that if you turn off AF on the Sony you have full manual control back if I'm not mistaken

  • t3i is the winner

  • I wouldn't quite say video quality is equal. On a few of the indoor tests they where equal, but most others I enjoyed the A33 video much more. Colors seemed more vibrant and the white balance with the cigarette lighter was amazing.

  • Thanks for the awesome detailed review. I would imagine that now the GH2 beats them both.

  • you are an amazing reviewer...well done

  • I'll go with Canon. I definitely think that Sony is putting up competition though. Great Review.

  • I really like the home-made tests you put in there, some of them more useful than you can find in other professional reviewers.

    Cool dad, too.

  • the sony looks good and so does the t2i...for action shots i think sony wins but cannon may have better manual control of shooting....could be wrong....it also seems that although canon is the standard along with nikons....sony is rising and so are pannys....i'll take the sony a55, but also considering the panny gh2 for its video quality.

  • Awesome review.. I enjoyed watch this.

I'm not into the DSLRs, i have a HD camcorder and now wants to try making videos with an awesome depth of field.

  • I really enjoyed this, Thanks

  • superb review, kudos

  • what about the articulated screen on the sony

  • I don't care what anyone says, the T2i rules.

  • @ThisDudeThatGuy I don't care what Canon fanboys say, I know better.

  • @ThisDudeThatGuy if you don't care what anyone says, you are a fool. is cannon your company or are you going to inherit the company? so why the hooliganism. 550d is a good camera but very far from "ruling" so is slt a33. Rather buy a 100$ camera and make pictures, no need for these camera's. People who should spend their money on more expensive camera's are aspiring amateur photographers. There are no bad camera's these days, all make nice pics ( 200-300$ is more than enough for that)

  • @webeskimo um....no...you obviously don't know anything. Shoot a video on $100 camera...it sucks. Don't believe me watch one of my first videos...I shot it on a $100 camera. Take a picture with a $100 camera and compare it to one of mine...mine will blow it away. But keep telling yourself that a $100 camera is fine...you'll be a fool but hey do what makes you happy...fool.

  • Very nicely done,

  • 09:48 Jeg lo syyykt høyt :D

  • Thank you! The best review/comparison I ever watched.

  • awesome review....

  • 9:46 win. Heheh. Great review, thank you! :)

  • I use magic lantern hack on Eos 550D. It makes the camera alot better then before. Cause it has more functions now

  • Well done. Perfect review ever watched.

  • Excellent comparison review of these two cameras. Keep up the good work.

  • His last comment about number of lense options did not consider that the Sony camera takes all the superb Minolta, and related after-market lenses for minolta camera, that were produced prior to Minolta selling out to Sony. He said Canon has been in the camera business longer and thus has more lenses to chose from. Fabulous review. Really let's you be able to consider the camera that meets your need.

  • Great review ...Thanks Andyax

  • Tip for video using the Sony. Hang the camera on your neck using the strap. Swivel out the screen out 90 degrees. Push the camera down, 20 cm forward from your body, with the strap tight. Look down to the screen to see what you're recording.

The idea is that the camera is tightly coupled to the stability of your body, instead of (always a little shaky) hands.

Extremely simple and works wonder and it's a great and convenient alternative to steadycams and monopods.

  • I can hear you're norwegian by the way you struggle to pronounce "33". But don't worry, I have the same problem.

  • /watch?v=8sQS3eNUL0I

  • Get Magic Lantern firmware on your 550D and it will become an awsome movie camera.

  • EXCELLENT JOB ON THE VIDEO

  • im sorry but "we did not notice any difference between them" is bull shit and doesnt wash with me

for a start the canon handles iso far better

sony should stick to tv and over priced gaming consoles

  • no contest.... canon are miles ahead of sony

  • @RidingMad125 That is not true at all. I've spend time with both. Each has their advantages. The Canon is *not* an automatic hands down winner. The Sony does a number of things better than the Canon.

The Canon does a few things better than the Sony as well.

Both are very formidable and neither is a loser.

The lack of auto focus for video was a deal breaker for me. Others might be ok with it.

The Sony is a lot lighter and you don't compromise on image quality (photo) at all.

  • @a1mint ofcourse you compromise on image quality.... the picture taken has a lot to do with the type of lens.... sony has nowhere near the range of lenses canon has nor does it have the same quality,

having used both canon and sony i wouldnt touch sony with a barge poll

  • 3:10 what lens you use at that ? its looks very filmmik i tried and tried but cant get results like that..it looks like 5k film

  • You only miss that with Sony A33 you can also focus manually to give smooth foucusing, the autofocus can be disactivated obiovously. With A33 you can also decide all features before shot video put it in manual mode, the only difference between the two cameras is in-video footage changes. With Sony you can use all Minolta lenses, so you have a big quality choice like Canon.

    Thanks for this beautiful review!

  • You are my new favorite person for making this.

  • can you focus manually with the standard kit lens for canon eos 550d ? :P

  • Well, you actually have manual controls, WB, aperture, exposure compensation on sony A33, you just have to shoot in manual focus =)

  • @cantrkdgn WB is available on either MF/AF I believe on the A's. Aparture control is off limits on either MF or AF. Exposure comp available on both MF / AF.

  • @a1mint You can also control the Aperture at A mode, I can shoot at f1.7 with my minolta 50mm lens as well as f4 and so on

  • I just watched this video again, and it is by far the most useful type of comparisons I have ever seen. I don't 100% agree with everything said here (and I may be wrong), but it comes very close.

And completely unrelated, but if this is a father and son, I can feel the love, congrats. I love how they both take a breath of fresh wintery cold air the same way...

  • GREAT REVIEW~! could you do a review on the same cameras but on the camera side of the two models.... quality of photo's etc :)

  • great video.!! i've been struggling myself for like 2 months thinking which one to choose between those two.! i think that i might go for the canon.! the true is i'm more interesting in filming, and i've got no much experience, but i think i got more choices to improve in knowledge if i chose canon 55od......???????? i'm still indecided.!!

  • How about A55 VS canon 550d vs Nokon D3100??

    in picture and movie side?

    thanks

  • @boakedo I believe that both the a55 (and a33) and the 550d (t2i) are almost the same in picture quality, with the Canon every so slightly on top (at higher isos - but not always).

I can't speak for the Nikon, but I *think* I remember dpreview mentioning that they're slightly behind. Of course, Nikon fanboys will lash out soon.

  • @a1mint

thank you so much, now I am realize and I have decided my choice, Canon 550D seem more vauable and saving more my mone, I can buy more lenses with this.

but I can't stop dreaming the special 10fps burst from A55, OMG....!! LOL

do you have any idea how much the max limit of Shutter Count from A55 and 550D?

    tq
