Dude, where the HELL did you come up with this?? Very rare. This was a great cover from GD. heard plenty of live recordings, never a vid. Thanks a mill...
Final date Pigpen played w/ the "Boys" was 6/17/72 Hollywood Bowl[via DeadbaseV!***]
This was not a Pigpen song altho after listening to 4/25/71 sbd just now, i can only hear possible congas being played. Not sure if he even sang harmony on this Merle Haggart jagged number. According to DB,.. the Dead played it another 13X after Pig's last show. Its in the books***
You're right...they did Greyful. There is a killer version of this song on disc #2 of the "So Many Roads" box set. Both Jerry and Donna sound fantastic. I highly recommend that you give that one a listen.
Phil talks about this show in his book. in my best attempt to paraphrase - They were supposed to do a gig in France that got rained out. This place was just turned into a recording studio for Elton John and they were being shown the place. Later that night they set up and played for everyone in town - about 200.
I guess thats why you see people milling around oblivious to what they are wittnessing.
Thanks so much for posting this! I love seeing or hearing the shows Phil wrote about.
Kidding aside, when i discovered the Dead, in 1976, my friends were talking of this 'Legendary Performance' which went unnoticed in Europe. Only a handful of folks knew them... Hasn't changed much here since, since they were a touring band not a commercial success. Which is why, when i finally got to see them live in 81 - a feat i NEVER thought possible - I got on the bus, and moved to CA.
So pretty. It's surprising that they only played this song a couple years, and then it disappeared from their rep.
Does anyone know the story behind this show? If Deadbase is reliable, there were no other European shows right before or after. Did they fly all the way to France just play this one little show? It looks like they don't even have a stage, their amps are on the lawn.
@traceling Far as i remember, they were invited to play this Chateau, probably by someone who was in the know and knew they even existed (we were in the dark in Europe lol) Might even have been a bunch of eccentrics who funded the trip. Looks like they were smart though and had ORTF there (TV) and i would think that helped pave the way for the 1972 tour. People who knew the Dead in Europe were (and still are) quite rare...
Nice nice nice!! Bands out nowadays come nowhere near matching this level of jamming and sould from the GD. Garcia;s voice sounds amazing here. Gotta love early Greaful Dead.
Very nice thanks man ;)
