The magic of Mike Scott lay in his love of the open world and all that nature offerred. The seeds were sewn many years back but some people did not grasp the beauty of the material that he both wrote and played. Mike's writing was so original at a time when poppy poppy was creeping in. It is a wonderful testimony to Mike Scott that he sang songs of beauty about the world that we temporarily
occupy. A significant nod also to Steve Whickham, a wonderful guy.
@IvanKovoNovo well it all comes down to how you define god. a lot of people throw the word around like its some fixed concept but it's really rather vague.
Fabulous song. The Rod Stewart version completely ignores the spirit of the song, changing the lyrics to turn it on it's head. Mike Scott's song is an inward-seeking, self-critical plea for help/guidance. Stewart's song is an outward-looking, elitist pledge to change the world around him. I've also read Scott was unhappy with the cover, and what Stewart did with the lyrics.
@truwth Rod Stewart is a pop singer; Mike Scott is an artist of the highest order. Apples and Oranges. Doesn't mean both versions don't accomplish their purpose.
@letekro Sure, but I have no problem contrasting/comparing Apples and Oranges. I prefer Apples, and if someone takes an Apple and tries to turn it into an Orange, that would certainly be a failure, and a pointless exercise (in my eyes).
beautiful! Thank you so much for posting. love this song. my favorite is still the rod stewart version. download it if you haven't heard it. it's on the Human album.
@zippydoodaa1 Good luck Zippy, it will be well worth it. The man, and his lyrics are, as far as I am concerned, infinitely magical. I loved all his live performances, and that truthful spirit which infused his and dealings so very effectively and so very positively. I'm a lyrics man I'm afraid? Mr Gaines was an excellent and very loyal member of this outrageously talented live band, he added so much in live performance, I felt as though I needed to back -peddle through four decades!

both the versions have their own elegance....
the difference is ....
mike's version comes from his heart....
while rod's version comes from his silky smooth voice...
anyway...both r brilliant..
