What are the laws in california pertaining to 'in training' dogs? I have a dog that is in training, and I want to know if I have laws that support me training in public... Of course, she is well behaved and already knows tasks, but there's things I'm working on...
@TheBahaiGirl In California, a disabled person training their service dog has public access rights with the service dog in training as long as the dog has a service dog tag from your local county animal control (the same people you get the regular license from), and the dog is leashed.
@francoroni The only thing that confuses me is that... I thought there is no registration or certification? No matter how much I read around and ask around, I get the same answer... that they don't need anything stating they are indeed a service dog.
@TheBahaiGirl Fully trained SDs are covered under the ADA (federal law)-- full SDs do not have to be certified or registered. They must be trained to mitigate their partner's disability and behave in public. The ADA does not cover service dogs in training. Some states give SDITs access, and when they do this they can add restrictions for SDITs. California requires SDITs to have the tag to get public access. CA also has penalties for SD harassment, and $1000 fine and 6 months jail for faking.
@francoroni Oh I see... Well, she already knows three disability tasks completely. And she is well behaved in public... So legally, she is a full service dog.
@CarneyFamilyVideos The one in this video was the reflective one from activedogs(dot)com, but in my more recent videos you'll see me using my leather one from onlead(dot)biz which I find more comfortable and a better length.
How do you approach going in the stores with your service dog? I'm in Canada and Service Dogs are only known to severely physically disabled and even then not always accepted. I'm not sure how to approach bringing my service dogs to stores. I'm very nervous to just walk in. However, I have the right to, don't I? How do you go about it? Do store staff stop you?
@Dannnnnie You need to check with your province about the laws, as I believe the SD and SDIT laws vary from province to province. Not all allow owner-trainers access with their SDITs, so you may need to find a program to work with. In the US, my state gives access rights to me training a service dog, so I can just walk in and know I have the legal right to be there. I just walk in and since I have a common breed I am rarely questioned. Check the Psychiatric Service Dog Society's Canada page.
I absolutely love this dog. I myself am training a service dog for my anxiety attacks. He is so beautiful and behaves really well. I can't stop watching him in action. At the time in this video he is doing as well as my dog who is 9 months so I guess I'm doing pretty good with the training. I'm only 16 and I'm doing most of it on my own. Sometimes I get advice from trainers. Thank you so much for posting these videos!
@calypa86 No, he's actually a silver. He was born totally black, and most silvers turn totally silver by about 2-3 yrs old. This video was taken when he was 9 months old. If you look at his more recent videos you can see he is more silver all over now.
@SullivanOlssen Thanks! This video was actually taken over a year ago. I hope to be posting his real public access test in another couple of months. Just fine tuning a few things, since CA has SDIT access I don't need to rush.
Yes, there are lots of dog booties you can buy for hot asphalt. Many handlers in Southern states keep boots on at all times. Try boots from Ruffwear or Neopaws.
i nodiced that you let those little kids pet ollivander. if the dog has a 'dont pet' sign on the vest, arent you not supposed to pet them even when there in training?
You can always ask to pet a service dog, and sometimes the handler will let you do so. My rule is that if people ask me nicely, I want to reward them so I let them pet. If people just come up and start petting, or they demand to pet him, then I do not let them pet. So ask nicely and you may be allowed to say hi! Also, Ollie's patch says "Assistance dog, don't distract". I don't mind people petting him when I give permission, but I don't want them distracting him when he is actively working!
