i really have to disagree with viscig60, all of dennis de youngs songs are great, and putting tommy shaw in the band was one of the smartest things they ever did, but they are both great
I won tickets to see STYX from a radio station, and I was skeptical because it was a small venue, at a casino, and Dennis DeYoung wasn't with them...BUT I was more than pleasantly surprised at just how AWESOME they were! Gowan does an excellent job, and he sounds a lot like Dennis. They were very engaging to their audience, and since it was such a small venue, I was on the 10th row, and they were just RIGHT THERE!! Ricky Phillips, the bass player, is from The Babys, and was the cutest!
i dont care what any of yall say!! i did see them live in 07 and they were awesome! maybe this isnt the originals but i can promise you wont regret seeing them.. they are still amazing
Actually it was formed when John and Chuck Panozzo got together with DeYoung, and Chuck Panozzo is still a member. Tommy Shaw and James Young were there from quite early on as well.
All you DeYoung lovers are crazy! This band would be NOTHING without Tommy Shaw. Except for Come Sail Away you can throw all of DeYoung songs in the trash.
DeYoung had all the "lovey-dovey top 40 pop hits" you are right. I just happen to prefer the more manly rock songs, sorry. If I wanted to hear those types of songs I would be looking up REO Speedwagon and The BeeGees. :)
Actually, he had ALL of the hits, the only Shaw song that got any notice was Too Much Time On My Hands. That's not saying I don't love the Shaw songs like Angry Young Man and Crystal Ball, but even those songs wouldn't have sounded like anything without DeYoung and the band's style of vocal harmonies and synth that he orchestrated. It would have just been a generic rock band no one heard of.
It's hard to gauge what their biggest hit was. #1 doesn't mean everything. The total length of time that a song spent on the charts, as well as its longevity as the years pass, should also be considered. There is a reason why their two disc set was called "Come Sail Away - The Styx Anthology," (before they changed the name to simply Styx-Gold). Come Sail Away is probably the Styx hit that has held up well over the longest time.
Dude your the biggest fucking faggot on the face of this earth that was tha faggetest thing i have ever read as a comment and the devil is going to fuck you in your ass with his fires red fag dick in hell for that gay ass coment!
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that whatever problem you had with my post, it didn't have anything to do with my use of the word gay, since in your reply you used some sort of negative word or phrase about homosexuals (like Chuck Panozzo) no fewer than 5 times. On top of that, your reply doesn't even make sense. You should study the English language some more before you try to use it. (By the way, how do you know if I'm a "dude?"). And the video/audio was, in fact, Come Sail A Gay.
Gowan you are free move along and stop ruining this band any further, I'm not sure you know this but your not singing your own songs which makes you a copycat. Are you really happy making a fool out of yourself copying Dennis DeYoung? The man has been ready to take his band back Do the right thing
But Gowan does perform some of his own songs with styx such as Criminal Mind so should styx go away and leave Gowan alone? I think not!
When Styx perform the fans want to hear the classic Styx music. Dennis is not there DeYoung left the band or was kicked out I don't really know but the remaining members of the band Styx like Gowan so it is really up to them and not People such as yourself as to whether he should stay or go! Maybe JY and Gowan brings his own style to the band as did DeYoung.
styx are the best i wanna see them live its unbaleavable how i would do anything to see them and the reason is i want to see gowan live and meet him i would go just to hear a criminla mind once!!once and well of course come sail away, lorleil, renegade, too much time on my hands,etc...
Seeing Styx without Dennis DeYoung is like sitting in front out your computer without a moniter. They are still good but Dennis DeYoung was Styx, and also Mr. Roboto was a great song.
RE: DeYoung...if you've ever seen the band with DeYoung on stage (my first concert ever was 1982), you'd see a cold bunch of guys that followed DeYoung like prisoners without a choice. Now, they're fun, they're relaxed, and the most entertaining band EVER
I'm sick of hearing this stuff about "where Dennis was taking the band." The band had three other grown men in it, and Chuck Panozzo. They didn't "have" to do anything Dennis wanted. I have an interview LP from '83, and the each member spoke positively about the "Kilroy" project. If they were so opposed to it, why did they do it? Were they compelled by the law? They'd kicked Dennis out once before - they could have again. But they knew they needed him, just like they (REALLY) need him now.
The Paradise tour stretched into 1982, which is not surprising because "Paradise Theater" was their only #1 album, and they were at the height of their success.
I have to disagree. I'm a long time fan and have seen them live many times. From opening for Foghat to headlining arenas in the late seventies to the current version. DeYoung was great in his day but was trying to take the band in an operatic and bombastic direction that nobody liked. Does anyone else remember the "Styx Stynx" headlines after they came out with that horribly stupid song "Mr. Roboto?" The current line-up concentrates more on their earlier rock sound and is great live.
Well they definitely don't suck, but I do sort of see yellbatman's point. I haven't seen the current lineup of Styx, but I love the early albums, and hearing them do this song with only 2/5 of the members that were there when they recorded it almost seems like a really good tribute band. You're right about Mr. Roboto and the direction DeYoung was taking them though. It was pretty crappy, but so was Too Much Time On My Hands, a Tommy Shaw tune. I'm glad they went back to their earlier sound.
you have no clue of what your talking about. Numbers and stats dont lie for one. so lets state some facts. Mr Roboto is probly the single most popular song styx ever produced. second is this song 3rd is Lady. apparently your hippy ass smoked yo much pot...your generation is what is killing the world.
If numbers and stats don't lie you should get ours straight before spouting off. "Lady" was Styx's biggest hit and the only one they ever had go to #1. It must be a sad life you lead if something as trivial as which version of a band is better makes you resort to name calling.
it doesnt matter what their best, 2nd best, or even worst song is, all you can say is that styx are a truly great band who have been going for years. im only 15 so im not the biggest fan in the world, but my dada has 37 styx albums, studio recorded and live ones too, and all their songs are great. ive seen them live twice! i met them backstage at the SECC!! they're great guys!! my personal favourite songs are Show me the way, paradise, together, while theres still time, and fooling yourself.
I think Roboto is an o.k. song within the context of the "Kilroy" story. But I like "Heavy Metal Poisoning"- and "Cold War,"(esp. live when it rocked harder) is a great tune.I think one of the many ironies about Tommy's griping about "Kilroy" is that his songs were the best ones on it. "Just Get Through This Night" might be his best song ever, and he was doing demos for that song in Japan before the Kilroy project was launched, FYI to the person who said it was his reaction to the Kilroy project.
When you say, "earlier rock sound," do you mean Tommy's hard rock songs like "Sing for the Day," "Never Say Never," "Boat on the River," "and She Cares?" I like all of those songs, but Tommy's claim that he wanted to rock more is bogus, especially in light of his eighties solo albums, which were not remotely close to hard rock. Tommy finally got what he wanted, which wasn't a heavier band. He got his chance to usurp Dennis, the real Styx leader, and portray himself as Styx' centerpiece.
I'm going to see them with Boston in Vegas June 28, I'm taking my dad as a father's day gift. The only other band I seen was The Steve Miller Band and they were awesome. I am only 21 but I love that era of music.
I was THERE!!!! Besides it being HOT as hell and the bad aroma coming from in front of us we DEFINITELY had a GREAT time!!! I was with howdy347...Thanks for taking me!!!
This was the best show of my life and i doubt anything will beat it, well maybe one, but thats cuz i'm probably seeing styx again with boston in chicago lol, you can't really pick a best part to this show, but one definate highlight was the lighter salute during the encore, haha i held my zippo high
thats amazing man, i was gonna buy tickets for that section but when i got to it, it was sold out so i was in row P still awesome seats, god it was such a great show, and like i told sil3ntoblivion, i have another vid to post so check back.
yeah i have one more to put up , i was seat 15 row P , not the best seat but it still rocked, omg it was such a good show. Im hoping to see them with boston in chicago
this is ok, but that is all.
