Mac Rabinack is truly an inspired artist (sometimes a troubled man) but his expression of New Orleans culture is about as pure as it gets. I wish someone would post a better recording of this song.
If I remember well, this song appeared in the soundtrack of "Angel Heart", which is the perfect movie for this song. Dr. John and New Orleans are awesome.
@Ganjamunki I just picked up "The Best of the Night Tripper" album off of Barnes and Noble, this track is on there with about 35 others on a 2 CD set. It was this video that prompted me to go buy the CD, and it was money well spent.
Zu zu Mamou witch yo ....pigtail on ... you say sombody stole a lock o yo hair.....you say it's missin, but cha don't know where ... you say sombody tryn ta rip off yo mind,...
go ahead and call da doctor, if ya so inclined ....
ha he is great,,,,and hold ur hats he was my neighbor.. he lived across the street from us in North Hollywood..we were weird..too my sister Sylvia babysatt for the Dr. his daughter Tara, and lovely wife Lorraine!!! hail to the Doc!!!
it really is a shame he abadoned this personna and style so early. "Gris Gris" remains an album that defies description, as odd and fresh and 'out there' today as when it was recorded in the late 60s. He was really onto something and now he's a lounge singer
@misteromeara ---welll, he got older, you know, like we all do. Can you imagine doing the same gig for 50 years? God that would be boring. Just play his records and dance to the music and thank your lucky stars you heard it and he created it! That's the beauty of recordings and technology - we get the chance to do it again.
This one going out to B.P. !!!!!! Burn your black candle brothers and sisters of the Gulf States!!! Call the Press make it National ...."Today in the news 600 thousand people in the gulf states burned black candles against B.P"......were not talking that give peace a chance candle burnin' crap.....no we talkin' 1000 years of darkness filled with dreams of dead babies....bad luck...bad water...bad teeth.....Zu Zu......visualize your enemy at the end of their rope!!! Burn your Candles!!!!!!!!
Saw Dr. John & his crew back in the day in concert & it was like a multi-media experience - performers coming up to the stage from all parts of the venue, Dr John hisself walking up the main aisle, flinging his powders & potions into the crowd.
I just found "Remedies" the other day, and am enjoying it quite a bit so far. I got it because it looked like an interesting record to sample from, but it turned out to be pretty great altogether. Reminds me of Tom Waits, but with more of a southern drawl & a LOT more acid.
I was there too...the sunshine, the Night Tripper album. This vid is awesome. Yeh, it has that voodoo overtone. I didn't know this vid existed. I'd searched for the Night Tripper track, only to find this track instead. Night tripper would be as awesome in this style. Would anyone know if that and other tracks were part of this set ?
@CarlSchwamberger When I first came home from Nam six of us had 50 hits of sunshine. We put 15 into a batch of fudge we cooked up and split the rest. Our ladies only wanted one each so figure it out. What a few nights!!! This cassette was my first intro to Dr John. I haven't been the same since. Been a long time.
This is the perfect song to celebrate halloween! voo-de-doo!
