the unequal calling is not to make the score better, it is to keep the game quiet, the team thats ahead doesn't care about the calls and the other loses any chance to complain, but he really needs to be more subtle about
Been coaching for 10 years now and I can tell you exactly what is going on and its been already said. The other team was getting killed. These girls are young and you don't want blow outs. If anything the other coach should be slapped around for still pushing the ball with a 60pt advantage. The ref was helping them out a bit so they don't have a terrible score
I used to referee..you can clearly see when this guy makes calls, he is unsure of himself...Very unconfident in his movements...When he blows the whistle, there is a pause he takes to think about what he is going to report..Its so obvious.
I'd give you a little more credit if you showed questionable calls against the black team since I'm sure this wasn't one-sided. My guess: the guy is a new official. I've been an official for 20+ years and I can tell from the way he's moving that the guy's nervous and he's thinking instead of reacting.
By the way, if that's your voice on the 3rd play, regardless of his call you *can* draw a charge while jumping...as long as the defender doesn't jump into the offensive player.

@brucemercer 1) Set was a bad choice of word on my part as I meant set as in defensive position and not feet planted - a charge is a judgement rule that you use different principles to determine, one of which the defender fails as she's moving forward into the offensive player - it'd be different if she was moving laterally or backwards and the offensive player came into her, but that didn't happen. This defender came from half way up the paint and met her, she was coming forward.

Ray Charles can see she hit all ball on the shot, where is this mystery foul you're talking abut? You can see contact with her body, no you can't not even in slow motion and during the shot nothing at all. 1:21, freeze it as her hand makes contact with the ball and you see is daylight between the two, not even close to a foul.
@brucemercer It's actually called Principal of Verticality which basically says a player is entitled to their space including the space above them. The defensive player is coming forward and not set in a defensive position, offensive player is already driving the lane so with the defender moving forward into her it's a defensive foul. This principal has nothing to do with this play, only if the offensive player jumped into her space, i.e she had established the position first, she didn't.
@brucemercer It's not really there, she goes up with both hands on the ball just as you teach anyone to go up with their guard hand on the ball and release it, though keeping it up, while her right hand extends to do the layup, basic basketball. The only reason you see the elbow at all is because the defender pushes and has her hand on her back riding her to the basket. Pause it at 2:57, one hand is wrapped around her back the other on top of her shoulder, it's a foul causing the slight elbow.
Well it looks to me that he missed the third one.The first one was an obvious charge and the second one was a slap that was called correctly. On the third one the offensive player walked twice before she leaned in for the charge so she should not have been allowed to go that far and the ball should have been a simple turnover, no charge. Good catch!!
@radmag505 Watch the entire drive into the lane. The defender is bumping with the body the entire drive and during the Block. She fouls with the body. The free throws are most likely due to the Bonus.
3rd one. Look up the Rule of Verticality and tell me which player violates it. This is why that is a charge.
3rd Clearly a charge IF you really know the rules. You say "She Jumped". That has nothing to do with anything. She jumped straight up and away from the dribbler. According to the rule of Verticality the Defender did not initiate contact. The ballhandler was out of control, threw herself into the Defender. Player Control Foul

Those were all the correct call based on what the Rules actually say and NOT what most fans THINK they say. The Ref in this game was right and so am I.

I know the Basic Principles of over 40 different Defenses including Presses, Zones, Traps and various types of Man-to-Man AND I know all of their strengths and weaknesses.
I watch at least 400 games a season and Ref almost 200 games a year on various levels from PeeWee to the NCAA. I am absolutely right.

If you are as good a ref as you say you are I wish you would referee games in my state, because there are very few good refs (I can take a call I disagree with as long as it is called consistently) in AL. The last two offensive fouls were correct... First the offensive player jumps into the definsive player who has a legal guarding position.. Second you can clearly see a elbow even the camera angel which is far away from the situation...

If anyone notices the score, its a 60 point blow out. He probably was trying to hep this team out a little bit. Yes they were the wrong calls but the black team is sorry as hell.
Second foul--if you'll watch the contact actually came not on the BLOCK but the defensive girl was riding the chest of the girl with the ball like a cowgirl on a horse. So, yes, this girl should've been charged with a foul.
The last one was definitely a charge: and it was an easy call. Charges are easy to call: did the defense have her feet planted before contact was made by the offense? Case close.
@Christlovesanimals looking at the second foul more closely, I think that that "foul" was not the right call. However, officials can't be perfectly in place at all times to see as accurately as possible. I can see how the official could think that she was riding the ball-handler.
These things happen...If that's all that happened--these three calls--to disturb you then you should be happy.
the first offensive foul looked bad. the second play the girl blocked the ball but took the girls body out, so it was a good call. The 3rd call could go either way,the guy in the background yelling she jumped ref, wtf? the defender can jump move backwards and still get a charge called. the 4th was just a fould because she was riding the girls back with her forearm.
I have to say...some of those calls could be correct depending on what the OFFICIAL saw. You werent on the floor, but on maybe the fourth or fifth bleecher. Unless you are an official then be quiet. Sometimes, there are a few things to consider when deciding to make a call. I'm just saying as another official. But just because you may have played basketball, doesn't give you the right to bash an official.
The first should have been a travel. second was a clear block third was a shooting foul & the last call was questionable... I coach highschool games and being a ref is hard and its harder when people shout and boo you for calls

I understand you aren't the uploader of this video, but for future reference, uploading it to youtube holds ALL referees responsible for his actions. Sending it to your local referee organization will hold HIM and only HIM responsible for his actions. Then also they can work with him to solve the issue.
The play at 2:35...I agree its a horrible call, but its not because "she jumped." A defensive player is allowed to jump straight up and still take a charge..But yes, it should have been a defensive foul.
Once in a GRAND FINAL the ref was favouring the other team. We had three guys fouled off (only 7 in team) and two got 4 fouls. Not one out-of-bounds call went our way. The other team was apologising throughout the game for the bad calls. They even argued that they touched it last when it went out, yet the ref was still calling fouls on us and giving them the ball. Ruined what could have been a great game between our two teams. Needless to say, we lost.

On the first play....I would point out that a travel was missed when the player with the ball jumped before she released the ball for the dribble. I do wish that there was more consistency with traveling being called when it happens. BTW, you can jump within your vertical plane and if you have established legal guarding position, it would be an offensive foul if the shooter creates the contact "moves" the defender out of their vertical plane.

One VERY IMPORTANT thing to remember is that the NBA is officiated VERY differently than high school or college ball! Why? One of the biggest reasons is that the rules ARE different. Also, the NBA is entertainment!

The third one would have been a good no call, offense girl was out of control, defensive foul would have bailed her out, bad call. Offensive wasn't necessarily there, they both made contact. Unfortunately, there are some bad officials in high school. I've been officiating a long time, if you have a problem, try officiating yourself. Its easy to make fun when your ten rows up watching, get on the court, and put on some stripes.

The last two offensive fouls were correct... First the offensive player jumps into the definsive player who has a legal guarding position.. Second you can clearly see a elbow even the camera angel which is far away from the situation...

The first "foul"--should've been a no call.
Second foul--if you'll watch the contact actually came not on the BLOCK but the defensive girl was riding the chest of the girl with the ball like a cowgirl on a horse. So, yes, this girl should've been charged with a foul.
The last one was definitely a charge: and it was an easy call. Charges are easy to call: did the defense have her feet planted before contact was made by the offense? Case close.
You need to get a life.

@Christlovesanimals looking at the second foul more closely, I think that that "foul" was not the right call. However, officials can't be perfectly in place at all times to see as accurately as possible. I can see how the official could think that she was riding the ball-handler.
These things happen...If that's all that happened--these three calls--to disturb you then you should be happy.

the first offensive foul looked bad. the second play the girl blocked the ball but took the girls body out, so it was a good call. The 3rd call could go either way,the guy in the background yelling she jumped ref, wtf? the defender can jump move backwards and still get a charge called. the 4th was just a fould because she was riding the girls back with her forearm.

I have to say...some of those calls could be correct depending on what the OFFICIAL saw. You werent on the floor, but on maybe the fourth or fifth bleecher. Unless you are an official then be quiet. Sometimes, there are a few things to consider when deciding to make a call. I'm just saying as another official. But just because you may have played basketball, doesn't give you the right to bash an official.

The first should have been a travel. second was a clear block third was a shooting foul & the last call was questionable... I coach highschool games and being a ref is hard and its harder when people shout and boo you for calls

This ref seems a really good and running the game with the strict rules and all the players seems a total bunch of dumb heads.The one who recorded this video doesn't have any idea about the basketball rules and misjudging the ref.

First one is JUMP as you can clearly see her legs in air n on the ground after that she pass the ball back.Second one is RUN(STEP) as you can see her steps with holding ball.Third one is defensive charge as you can clearly see the girl trying her best to jump over her opponent.Fourth one is a direct charge on opponent.

@Pizzle23 1. This is youtube. 2. Shouldn't the basketball game depend on the players to be skilled enough that no matter the quality of officiating they can overcome the handicap and win? 3. I don't know the rules of basketball so IDK how good or bad of an official he is, but as a referee of other sports... this kinda pisses me off. Next time you mis-filed some paperwork at work I'm to whip out a camera on your ass and stalk you for the rest of your shift for any other mess-ups.

@DenshiDereku Obviously the game is based on skill..or SHOULD be based on skill but you obviously have never watched sports if you do not think they do not decide outcomes of a lot of close games and with one wrong call can botch a game SKILL OR NOT. These referees were not duped into their profession. It comes with the territory. It is one of the most critiqued profession and with reason. Not alot of praise for great reffing and hell otherwise. Its the same with being a player. Spare me.

@Pizzle23 I never said they don't influence the game, my point being people shouldn't be quick to blame the referee. Yelling at us solves nothing, it distracts us and makes it harder for us to concentrate allowing a greater chance of error. You don't solve anything by ridiculing them for incompetency, you just make yourself feel better about your team losing. I can handle being criticized, what I get annoyed with is a dumbass with a megaphone shouting nonsense and uploading it to youtube.

Its just in this instance, it seems like the Ref is purposely making bad calls. I know you said you dont really know the basketball rules but just trust me a little bit on this just as I would trust your judgment if you knew a sport better than me. It really seems as if hes purposely calling wrong calls. Its just unprofessional.

@Pizzle23 I'm not going to take a stance on whether or not these are good or bad calls. It is out of my area of expertise so I can't comment. I understand you aren't the uploader of this video, but for future reference, uploading it to youtube holds ALL referees responsible for his actions. Sending it to your local referee organization will hold HIM and only HIM responsible for his actions. Then also they can work with him to solve the issue.

The play at 2:35...I agree its a horrible call, but its not because "she jumped." A defensive player is allowed to jump straight up and still take a charge..But yes, it should have been a defensive foul.

Once in a GRAND FINAL the ref was favouring the other team. We had three guys fouled off (only 7 in team) and two got 4 fouls. Not one out-of-bounds call went our way. The other team was apologising throughout the game for the bad calls. They even argued that they touched it last when it went out, yet the ref was still calling fouls on us and giving them the ball. Ruined what could have been a great game between our two teams. Needless to say, we lost.

On the first play....I would point out that a travel was missed when the player with the ball jumped before she released the ball for the dribble. I do wish that there was more consistency with traveling being called when it happens. BTW, you can jump within your vertical plane and if you have established legal guarding position, it would be an offensive foul if the shooter creates the contact "moves" the defender out of their vertical plane.

Kobe Bryant shot fakes and gets his defender to jump into the air... You know what kobe does.... He jumps into the defender and shoots it... and guess what... One VERY IMPORTANT thing to remember is that the NBA is officiated VERY differently than high school or college ball! Why? One of the biggest reasons is that the rules ARE different. Also, the NBA is entertainment!

The third one would have been a good no call, offense girl was out of control, defensive foul would have bailed her out, bad call. Offensive wasn't necessarily there, they both made contact. Unfortunately, there are some bad officials in high school. I've been officiating a long time, if you have a problem, try officiating yourself. Its easy to make fun when your ten rows up watching, get on the court, and put on some stripes.
