The driver is obviously at fault, (s)he's a dangerous, careless scumbag. That said... this would not necessarily have happened to someone driving a regular bike with brakes. The rider notices the fiend way before slamming into their car; he can't avoid the accident (which he's in no way responsible for) only because he can't decelerate/stop fast enough. RIGHT, HIPSTER, ALIVE: choose two.
huh? that's sadly not how bikes work. there was not time for the guy to stop. if he was using hand brakes, he would surely have indo'ed right into that car. the safest option in this case would be to lace alongside the car until you can hop out- not stopping. i go through this intersection in every direction, every day.
I'm with meltpotato. Also, from the Bike Rider's perspective, it would not be immediately clear that the car is turning right but might appear as just swirving. You can't just completely brake everytime someone appears to be swirving into you because that's every couple minutes. To me, it looks like the Bike Rider is moving to the right to avoid getting hit by the swirve and not expecting a full-on obviously illegal right turn.

Ouch ! The poor cyclist. Amazing how the person did a turn down a one way street the wrong way. I've seen that here too. (too many times). Probably tourists or on their mobile phone not paying attention.
Just shut up scosol! I was hit buy a car that did just that. She made a Illegal Left-hand turn and I smashed straight into the passinger door and damaged the car. Cops came & gave her a ticket. I hope that bicyclist in this video ripped the passinger side mirror right off to show the car driver how to follow the LAW!!
today, Sunday,I was HIT on that intersection at about 12:40 p.m. by an motorist who was making an illegal right turn. He paid me and just drove off. There were witnesses, and im ok. Just a few scrapes on my fingers. The medics came and checked me out and the police filed a hit and run report.now,im not sure what to do.Could anyone help me? should i just ignore it and continue life? thanks
The driver clearly hooked the cyclist -- it doesn't even matter that the right turn is illegal here, the motorist passed the cyclist and hooked right into him.
The bicyclist was obviously not paying attention and going too fast for his own abilities and his bike's abiltities. Mr Fashionable there seems to on a fixed-gear bike with no brakes- which while being the latest trendy thing to do, is also utterly stupid. Save your slaps for that silly stupid scenester fuck.
If he wasn't paying attention, how did he try to avoid the collision by turning right with the car? If a car runs directly into you, it doesn't matter how much you're paying attention, you're going down. You could be standing completely still, high on caffeine, wearing night vision goggles and still get hit. If it's the driver's fault, it's the driver's fault.
He failed to notice both the car's brake lights and turn signals. There's a simple rule- if you hit something in your direction of travel you are at fault. The bike hit the car- because the bike was going to fast and travelling too close for the capibility of its "brakes".
The bike was following the rules, the car obviously made an illegal turn. Your arguments are only backed up by an ASSUMPTION that Mr fashionable was on a fixie, that dosent give the motorist the right to ignore the law or the bike. You wouldn't believe how often cars just ignore bicyclists or pedestrians, and people (and the law) accept the excuse "ohh I couldn't see him", well I don't accept that excuse. If you can't see him you shouldn't be driving.
scosol you are simply wrong. The car cut straight across him. Biker - helpless innocent victim. Car driver - driving without due care and attention for other road users. Hope you don't have a driver's licence. If so, please do some serious reading and thinking before you're next behind the wheel - you won't find your ridiculous 'simple rule' - it doesn't exist. Better still get a bike.
Let's see, who to slap. Cyclist in a BIKE lane. Motorist who overtakes a bike and then hits the bike in the BIKE lane by making an ILLEGAL turn. scosol.
I think I'll go for two out of three. By your logic scosol, if an oncoming car enters another cars lane and gets hit headon it's the other drivers fault. You may want to sign up for a driving lesson at some point. The bike hit the car because the car overtook him and turned into him doing a right hook into him making an illegal turn.
scosol - hilarious? You ought to be ashamed of your self. Regardless of whether or not it's legal to turn right, a responsible driver should be aware of bikes, especially if he just passed one. This driver deserves to lose his/her licesnse. And you deserve to get slapped.
a) Expect that people are going to make a right turn here, as there is no reason for it to be illegal other than some dumbass's "plan". When one intersection works differently then the thousands of the rest of them there are going to be accidents, regardless of any signs posted. Why not make the meaning of "red light" and "green light" reversed here too- then post a sign to that effect- get the point?
The car driver was obviously blind. If you can't spot a simple no right turn sign you shouldn't be at the wheel, but rather get back to the mental institution you've fled from.
this intersection always makes me nervous when biking through.. it's a bike lane adjacent to a FREEWAY for christ sake

its kinda strange cos it seems to be a no-right-turn intersection. so the driver broke the law?

How did sfbikeorg happen to catch this on video? And why just the few seconds of the actual collision??

You need to be more observative. There is a no right turn sign on the turn where the car crashed the guy.
