sorry guys but this is shit.
if an unknown band released stuff like this they would be instant laughing stock. just that portishead did it doesnt mean they are geniuses. shit is shit. I can understand they want to do something different, but lethargic beats all through the songs, impossible harmonic chords cringing on the brink of denotality is not the way to go ...
@ardakaraduman ... I gotta disagree... old Portishead had its place in the mid 90s, but they were always looking to re-invent... I consider "3" more of a Joy Division move towards simplicity in allowing haunting drum beats to set a mood, and then utilize the guitars to sway the song... Definitely some of their best..
Ummm...to all those complaining of Pink Floyd rip off...the overall influence of the sound for this Portishead song comes more from an early electro duo from the 1960's called Siver Apples than anything else. Portishead have always claimed this group were a major influence of theirs. In fact Silver Apples sole survivor has done a cover version of this song. Its on youtube so go look for yourself. :o) Hope that gives a better perspective on the influences for this sound and song.
@kevtyrrell good call. i listened to "You and I" and felt it right away. not even sure if that's the track you're talking about, but i felt it. this is just slower.
@chanrider Well the overall sound is very Silver Apples-esque but the song that I think most contributes to "We Carry On" is the Silver Apples song "Oscillations". But the song is definitely an homage to Silver Apples than any other Prog Rock or Synth group from the 60's or 70's. In fact there is a live cover of "We Carry On" which Silver Apples performed on here if you look for it, :o)
yes, one of the members died so its just simeon now (the singer/synth player) they put on a very good light show with everything being manipulated live.
uttersman, Portishead is a town near Bristol...In any case, they've such a long history in the british alternative music that I can't tell you that in a few lines...Please do a wikipedia search for further information...
P.S. I'm a Radiohead and Portishead fan since 1995.

i love all these wannabe radiohead bands that cant play past a 6th grade level ex.-coldplay and these idiots...i mean even their name carries subconscious envy....
Wow. Someone needs to look back to the '90s and recognize how much Portishead influenced Radiohead as they made the jump from their "rock" to their current personae.
@automator3000 I don't think so, Portishead's Third came after HTTT, Amnesiac, Ok Computer... I don't see the point in saying who influences who, they're both great... I saw Portishead last sunday, great interpretation of this song by the way
@automator3000 They influence each other an given that there all friends I don't doubt that ...and also the drummer of Portishead head is touring with radiohead lol
we waited 11 years for this, and it is so amazingly, brilliantly worth it. if "third" isn't the best album this year, i can't wait to see what tops it.

I like how Portishead reinvented themselves on "Third". Nice move to stay artistically relevant. Trip hop and nu metal are for the birds man.

Actually Portishead formed in 1991.. from? Portishead, England. Radiohead's Pablo Honey was 1992. Noob.

no... no they didn't...
rbenesh 3 years ago
'Stole' is such a negative word, 're-used' or 'inspired by' is better. Imitation is a compliment.

Is Imitation a compliment for you ? I find it's negative, too...
kalyptus 3 years ago
it has a similar approach, but hasn't been stole or copied.

@slitheringinterstate I don't think pink floyd owns the beat anyway

@slitheringinterstate
It is, hadn't noticed before. The feel from the song also has a lot from an early electronic psychedelic US synthesiser band called Silver Applies.
Still, I like this more than the Pink Floyd song :)
