Probably he was just nervous and had a memory slip. I have a recording of Richter having a memory slip in the slow movement of the Prokofiev 7th sonata during a live performance, yet possibly it's my favorite recording of the piece. I don't think it matters in the large scheme of things if someone executes a piece perfectly, if they understand and convey the musical meaning in a profound and convincing way. People need to stop fixating on the unimportant and meaningless aspects of music making.
Not that noticeable to anyone who doesn't know the piece, it's not like he just started getting irate and slamming random keys. But I guess if you do know the piece it could be pretty bad.

I am just an amateur but I´ve rgonized that if I play on heavy pianos like some Steinways i have a great difficulty to press the keys in full speed, and the I f*** up. Is this what happends here?
This guy is far better than me and is qualified to the competition so he should not have the same problem?
Ouch Liszt is always tricky even the somewhat easyer pieces. But his body language seems to say from the start : I really don't WANT to play this right now.
I don't like to really bash people or anything, but this was really bad. I mean, maybe he was just nervous but I don't think he practiced enough, there are mistakes everywhere...
Almost everything is wrong, but the heavy mistakes are at 0:12 and 1:08. This is the Valse Impromptu by Liszt and the pianist was obviously having a bad day;-)
This playing sounds like, hmmm, unfortunately I don't know how to put it any more politely... but "SHIT". He wished he listened to Cziffra before he raped himself on the stage.
Who is this person? Is there a required tape/CD for the preliminary selection round? Or is it just on resume? If it is LIszt competition - Budapest in the past they just looked at your CV to see if you won enough awards / no recording required. I think Utretcht may have a recording requirement. I do not think he should have been admitted to compete.
Is this the Liszt Competition in Utretch or the one in Budapest? It is just not the mistakes that makes this bad. It is SO heavy, and musically insensitive. And this is a salon piece. I think the greater crime is that the interpretation is totally out of character.
The performing arts demand great skill and dedication - yet no-matter what talent or pianistic abilities, things like this do happen. Th ehuman mind is not perfect - combine that with nervousness - and some embarssing moments will ensue.
LOL. I thought the mistake was in the beginning in the intro. Then the second one came when the main melody started. I thought that was it. Then came the big doozy! lol. I vote for this one to be at least 2nd best fuck up.
I know how this guy feels..I just played Beethoven's pastoral sonata on my sophomore recital, and I had an even worse accident...but the audience were so dumb (collectively) that they didn't even know what happened because I kept playing as if I knew what I was doing.
well thats why you must perform when you are totally SURE about it buti think technice is everything if you prepare the piece with a good techniche even with your eyes close you will not make a mistake
Sorry, but this is a very heavy-handed unpleasant performance of a lovely salon piece. That bothers me more than the unfortunate memory slips. What do my own skills have to do with that? Watch my films if you want to see whether I can play or not.
u never gonna make it to the next round if you play too many mistakes or have any technical problems..

@nyc11104 Yes quite! Yes sir! Rather!
Please don't place your prejudices upon classical music. It's already got a bad reputation.
But do feel free to criticize datruzepp's writing based on how effing annoying it is. Shut up, datruzepp!

I hope you never play a note wrong in your whole life. Or you're fucked up. Most likely you're not even a performer yourself.
