The Southwyck Mall

Thanks for posting this. I have fond memories of going to that mall in the late 80's and early 90's. I remember enjoying Sbarro's at the food court 0:38 and going to Software Etc. (which was on the same side of the mall) to look for Sega Genesis games. It seems that after Montgomery Ward closed down the mall started dying.

@johnnyjohnson I have the same memories. We must be the same age. I have a brick from the mall after they tore it down. It's a place in Toledo people will talk about for a long time but never know. Like how my parents still talk about Tiedtke's Department Store.

I remember that place used to be jumpin' with business with the merry go round and the candy shop and those globe lights. Damn, do I miss the 90's. now it's like the Tiffin Mall, deserted. Sorry, I meant was, considering the asbestos claims, its nothing now. just future rubble.

This was once a mall for the suburanites.Over time the suburbanites moved out and the ghetto moved in.I know,I once lived in Toledo but no longer thank God!! The whole city is ghetto and I hope Toledo dries up and blows away.

There is progress and change in our lives. Things come and go. Our favorite childhood places are leveled and replaced with bigger and better. Southwyck Mall should *not* be an example of this. It's insanity. The structure is solid and clean. Westfield needs to come in and buy it. Clearly morons are running the show. I went in this past Jan 2008 while visiting Toledo and I was completely disgusted that this has been *allowed* to happen. Why don't you care enough to fix this!?! Idiots!!!

I have been to the new Franklin Park with that ugly as hell parking structure they put up. If the mall was a bi or tri level structure I could see it but that huge parking lot is stupid. Nice that the Toys R Us next door is still open though last time I went.

This place used to be so cool and hip and happenin'. I don't live in OH anymore, but I'd only visit there for DEB. It's really sad what's become of it. The owner needs to sell it to someone who knows how to make that area something nice again.

I wonder what killed it. I lived there 1975-78 and there were really cold winters at that time! It was nice to have a place to walk around, see a movie and get out of the cold!

What killed it is that the whole area turned minority. The white people got pushed farther out into the suburbs, and no one wanted to come into the "black" mall. So everyone drove all the way to Franklin Park.

Nobody "pushed" white people out. Its called 'white flight'. The mall died due to poor management, zero updates, and anchors going out of business.

Franklin Park has undergone 2 major upgrades in the last 15 years; Southwyck hasn't changed in 30+. Montgomery Ward went out of business and nothing else filled its void.

Its really a shame, I live down the street from here. Good location, just a shoddy building now.

It's all relative. If you are a white professional living deep in the suburbs, anything that isn't a crisply new big box store universe is "bad". And that's how people saw it. Throw in apartment buildings with lower-income or working class people and the white professionals run even faster. I don't mean "bad" in the way that most see it. I mean "bad" in the way that yuppie Toledoans see it.

I met Jimmy Carter during his campaign. Bought my first skateboard in "Old Town". Purposed to my first wife by the fountain. Hung out at the "Red Baron" and fought the Gunslinger with my dad. Had a bagel for the first time. Saw a bunch of movies. Brings back so many memories.

Lived in Ohio twice and had been there quite a few times. After the gangs moved in and the movie theater closed (both of them) it was the end, but wholly cow that mall takes me back. Franklin Park was the nicer but Southwyck is a part of me too.
