Thank you Edward for posting this. I remember seeing this ages ago, and I recorded it but lost the vid. Raymond Leppard conducting - love him. There was also a duet in this programme - James and a soprano whose name I can't recall. Brilliant to see and hear this again!
Good evening AntPDC , Thank you for your kind comment. In the light of your reference to the old concert - The Handel Tercentenary Concert, Westminster Abbey, London, 23 February 1985 I shall try to look the duet out - if indeed I have retained that part of it and include that item in a future video upload. Kindest regards Edward
@EdwardBayly Many thanks Edward. I've now remembered, thanks to your comment. The piece was: "When the ear heard him" from the Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline, and the soprano was Pauline Tinsley. Best wishes.
Thank you actionsrlouder, however I do refer you to my personal feelings on the piece within my introduction to the Ode. "A wonderful singer performing the beautiful Handel song with great feeling". Agree to disagree perhaps? Regards Edward
Good evening NateMelo614 Thank you. I concur in that she indubitably did refer to the opening phrase of the song - and she may very well be correct on that point - however I am a pianist with no skills in vocals and I simply directed her to, not a single phrase, but to my personal feelings towards the overall performance which I found to be heartwarming in its sincerity. In my desire to be tactful perhaps I did not amplify my true point of view. I do hope that you did enjoy the video. Edward
I think he looks nervous here and there are a couple of places where he breathes in the middle of a phrase or is slightly below the pitch, I am not criticising James, I think he is amazing, particularly live, but this is not his best live recording.
Hello amatorynumber, I bow to your greater knowledge. As intimated in an earlier comment - I am but a humble pianist and have no vocal training or skills whatsoever, however this 1990's concert was the first time I had heard Mr Bowman and the memory of this moving performance has always remained. I had actually tuned in to the BBC to hear Zadok, Messiah and Xerxes in particular but this gentleman's voice - and trumpet obligatto - was all that I could recall from that concert. Regards Edward
@EdwardBayly One can never forget James when having seen him live. I understand. He is a quite a showman and a very good one at that. And the voice!!! what can one say about that voice? He seems to have been a bit nervous on this occassion, that's all. Best wishes.
@NateMelo614 Nothing is 'more difficult' when singing in falsetto. If it is, whoever has those difficulties is singing in the wrong register. He must have just been nervous, that is all.
@amatorynumberair moves more quickly when using falsetto...my voice teacher and i go over this all the time.because it takes more air to produce good quality sound in falsetto and especially with his build, you can run out of air quickly even when trying to preserve it technically...long notes and melismas require a lot more air, they are harder to sing in falsetto than in chest voice because air is easily conserved in chest voice, Like trills are more difficult in chest voice, not in falsetto
@NateMelo614 Falsetto needs more breath control but it is not 'harder' to sing as a countertenor than it is to sing as a baritone, at least, it shouldn't be. I know, I am a countertenor. Difficulty (really immaterial) does not mean we should allow inaccuracies of pitch/breathing in the middel of a phrase when not required. Anything else?
Hi! LaTruieLaineuse, Thank you for your lovely comment. I agree & refer you to my earlier comment " Uncertain whether it is the beauty of the Handel Ode itself, the beauty and class of the Bowman and tranquil orchestra chemistry, or the beauty and perfection of the unintrusive trumpet obligatto which makes me return over and over again to this performance. Perhaps simply that they all blend together perfectly to provide the listener with a wonderful musical experience" kindest regards Edward
I remember this concert well, we didn't have a video recorder and I only had a little tape recorder; loved the performance and played the tape to destruction. I have James singing this on a CD "The James Bowman Collection" with Robert King and The King's Consort and it gives me a tingle down the spine everytime I hear it. It is brilliant to see him sing it so beautifully. Thank you for sharing the video.
Hello Gilliebean1958, I appreciate your comment. Perhaps simply that they all blend together perfectly to provide the listener with a wonderful musical experience. Thank you for your kind comment. Regards Edward
Hi merseybeat1963 - thanks for comment. I shouldn't have thought so as I'm sure we would have seen and heard some other items from that concert here on YouTube. That's the reason why I listed this brilliant item and will upload others at a later date. However perhaps others may advise if there is indeed a DVD on the market. regards, Edward
I have also been looking for this recording, since I first heard it on the Handels tercentenery concert.I taped it and some of the finedst recordings of Handels Music was from this concert.
Hello dennis14557 - Thank you for comment. I still have the tape and shall put some of the other items from the concert up in due course. regards Edward
Hi gordonscroft, You are very welcome. I taped the concert from the BBC broadcast. I had originally tuned in only to enjoy Zadok. This new singer [to me] however absolutely stunned me with this quite outstanding performance. regards
My godness¡¡¡ This tape must be from early 80s¡¡¡ How young Mr Bowman¡¡ The BEST counter tenor alive, so far¡¡¡ Thank you, Mr Bowman, for your incredible, heavenly and precious voice.
Hello FilbertoZambrano, Thank you for your kind response. Excuse the delay - I have been off-line. I recall taping this during the 1990's from a BBC Handel Concert when I tuned in to hear Zadok. I was amazed at this effortless performance by James Bowman. Regards Edward
If it wasn't for the Dellers the voice might have been lost, but if wasn't for Bowman, the renaissance of the voice would not be so prevalent now. All modern counter-tenors, whether they realize it or not, owe much to him. He'll always be my hero in this regard. :)
Hello GeminiAmbience, Thank you for comment. You have the better of me re this wonderful singer. I am a pianist - but I remain amazed at the quality of this wonderful singer every time I hear him perform. Regards Edward
Is it just me or does he often go sharp.

@amatorynumber he breathes because those phrases are sometimes 6 or 7 measures long and in falsetto, holding 5 can be a serious feat....

@amatorynumber almost every countertenor breathes where he did anyhow...there are a lot here on youtube who breathe in that same spot.
