Just ordered a Pacifica (430 US$) and a Roland Micro Cube amplifier (150 US$). Quite excited^^, I've been playing on a classical guitar until now (for 2-3 years). Anyway thanks for getting me into playing guitar Justin;)
@sanaeEla Absolutely. I certainly do it. Steel strings can be a little harder to play for a beginner but it really shouldn't be a problem. There will be a very different sound of course, but as long a you're happy with that, go for it.
In my opinion, the best guitar to start with is a classical. if you can do barre chords on it, you'll be able to do them on electrical/acoustic with ease. it'll some time tho to get used to the smaller neck but that's not really a problem. another thing is that they are much more cheaper then acoustic/electrical guitars.
Since I'm not too confident when I'm playing guitar, I've been thinking of buying an electric guitar so I can play it unplugged (so it's quite while I'm practicing) and use the amp whenever. (I have an acoustic already and apparently it's really loud.)
But I'm stuck between the choice of a semi-hollow electric guitar to a solid body one.I normally play rock, and at other times blues and jazz.
you said to buy an electric for beginning? huh.......i wish i could have one!.....playing guitar for almost 3 years....haven't touched an electric yet!!! don't know when i'll be able save enough money to bye one.....you know what? it might take my whole life!!
forgot to mention, you're the best teacher i've ever got!!!
Brilliant advice from THE MAN. I bought a cheap, thankfully secondhand, acoustic guitar for £27 and had to spend a fair bit of time learning to make it easier to play. I'm quite practical, so I had the confidence to do it. You may not..! Plus I knew someone who gave me more advice. But on Justin's advice I bought a good secondhand electric guitar [a Vintage VS6 - Gibson SG std copy], and a practice Hiwatt 15 amp later on, from ebay for very cheap money and it was the very best thing I did.
Thank you so much for being so helpful & uploading this...I really needed this advice, i was just about to go for an acoustic guitar but I'm so glad I found your video first, Iam playing the heavier style after all...
But yeah, I can't thank you enough for doing this vid...You're awesome... :0)
BUT to be critical: if you want to develop a good technique from the start or would like to learn classical/spanish guitar in the future, you should seriously consider starting off with a classical guitar.
Btw Justin's classical technique isn't any good. This proves yet again that it's very easy to switch from classical to acoustic/electric, but very difficult to switch the other way around.
Pretty Cool lesson here, Covers the topic quite well. Ive just made a bunch of detailed courses for beginners and advanced guitarists that you might be interested in. Check it out! would love to know what you and anyone watching this video thinks. Its totally free, and i mean TOTALLY
Hi justin, you know that barre chords are easier to play on electric guitar than acoustic so after the begginners course if one would go back to the acoustic, he/she would find it a challenge to play the f barre chord right off the bat.
FINALLY: Do not trust the salesman/lady!! They are the same as used car sales people!! They push the stuff that ain't selling onto those who don't know better & the merchandise usually isn't selling cause it's poor quality. AND: The distance of the string off of the fret is IMPORTANT!! 3/16" inch for those of you in U.S.A. The Martin D16GT is about as cheap as I'd go & it has a narrow neck for short fingers. Not pushing Martins. Taylors are good also!!
If you have short fingers, get one with the neck width of 1 11/16th of an inch at the neck and 2 1/8" at the 12th fret. ALSO: the string distance from 1st - 6th string would be 2 1/8 on most but some are 2 3/8".
ALSO: DO NOT PAY THE MSRP !! For instance Martin acoustic guitars are available for 65% of the MSRP advertised by Martin at their website. Some online stores' prices are slightly higher, but then they say they'll beat any advertised price. So an acoustic that Martin advertises at $1500.00 should be able to be purchased for $975.00. ALSO: There are cheap Martins, that shouldn't be considered to be purchased.
is electric really good for a new player? i got a crap $70 acoustic now, only start learning and sometimes it does sounds weird. cause of that i cant afford a private teacher, so im not sure whether it's my problem, or the guitar's problem.
so ppl, pleazzzzz!!! give some advice, should i buy an electric now to start off with?
and btw, i like electric too, love carlos santana!!
Quit surprised he advised to buy an electric guitar for beginners? I want to learn to play the guitar myself, and I always thought you should learn it on an acoustic. I wanna learn to play songs like Oasis, Foo Fighters, Beatles, and stuff.. What should I buy??
I highly respect u Justin thanks to your advice i am buying a Fender Squire Stratocaster as a beginner guitar :) and ill definitely be using your videos for lessons :)
I respect you Mr. Justin.....I learned a lot from you...I'm still studying so still I don't do a job...I don't have a credit card.I'll definitely participate for your donate section when I got a job...THANKS A LOT..
of course, not all beginners are poor, except perhaps kids. There is something to be said for a high end guitar that feels and looks beautiful, even for beginners.
ive had an electric guitar now for about a year. im looking to learn how to play spanish music now and i think i should get an acoustic. im looking for a good guitar for around 200-300. i'll be going to the guitarcenter next week. any suggestions??
i got an acoustic for £30 on ebay, the action is so high, like i can fit my little finger behind the strings hahaah! bar chords are not easy at all on the high frets. didnt realise how bad my guitar was until i played a friends, i sound like a pro on their one
but i just play for fun so dont really need a good one
Hey great vid. Just stumbled across your website. Am wanting to learn guitar from beginning later this summer when I have time. Keep up the great work. Will def subscribe to your site. Your very clear and helpful. Cheers.
@brenoakiy Bourree in e minor by bach- arranged for calssical guitar. If you don't play classical guitar yet you will have to start with something easier, but if you practise you could progress to this stuff pretty quickly :)
Ah i knew i wasnt crazy! Good point saying if the acoustic guitar is cheap its probably not good. I bought the damn squier sa-100 pack for $90 and im a begginer. But that guitar was terrible imo. it was really hard to play compared to the other guitars i have played. Thxs for the tips! great vid
Hi anyone got any advice for someone who would like to play acoustic light rock, I love songs like pearl jam black , slower foo fighters etc any specific brands or models that are good, I would like something around £100 - £150 max Many thanks
This hasn't really helped me. The problem is I've gotten a classical guitar yesterday for Xmas and I hate it. My parents want me to learn to play it and then I'd get an electric guitar. I wanted an electric guitar but now I've got the classical one so I'm not happy. Why can't parents just get the right stuff for their kids? :(
Dude, I started out with an acoustic guitar with super crappy action. The distance between the 12th fret and the 6th string is ONE CENTIMETER. I learned on that. When I got a Fender Stratocaster, It was like butter.
Play the classical guitar. It's like a cage. When you're out of the cage, you'll be amazing.
Dude, I've got an acoustic guitar and I know how it feels, I wanted an electric guitar also, but you know what, every good guitarist learned on acoustic or classic first. You should start saving money so you'll be able to buy yourself your favorite guitar ;)
You can learn rock and pop an punk and any thing on classic too, just keep practicing. OK? :)
@Synnergy08 Your parents did the right thing. Classical guitar is thicker, more difficult but overall clearer! When you first start it is important that you first learn chords, scales etc. Classical guitar is the clearest and best way to do that. When I started (about 9 years ago) I got a classical guitar which my father build. When I was able to play enough chords and got used to it, I got a 'real' classical. After that I bought a cheap electric. Now I own about 7 great electric guitars
my first was an Abeline acoustic which is a subordinate for Samick music corps. and then a Silvertone REvolver(the indonesian made) not the vintage... i wish..
Well. The Les Paul was pretty cool. Sounded ok, felt like shit though. really heavy, fret board was not that good, the neck was pretty fat and just didn't feel that good.
the strat was much better. it's light, it stays in tune, the fret board is beautiful, the frets are bigger.
for a beginner i would get a squier or a fender strat. just like the one justin has in this video ^
u can he just means you embelish alot of playing on a classical . willie uses his for country which is what made his sound famouse.. but most classical guitar plaers dont just strum they strum yes but finger pick alot of the notes. more then just strum.. he just got talkin to fast and skipped over without goin into detaill.
"if u wanna play classical guitar you should diffidently buy a classical guitar " haha your very fun man ,, thank you verrrrrrry much Justin your simply the best :)
I have a 1957 reissue Strat made in Japan and its tone and feel are outstanding. All the standard reissues are made now in Mexico though. Try not to get ripped off. If you go to your dealer make sure he is not charging big money for a Standard or Mexican Stratocaster. You can find the Mexican made ones in the same model as the American Made and you just pay $500-$800 less . 300 Quid is @ $490. If you find a standard Strat for that much in Britain GET IT. DO NOT PAY 300 Quid for a Squire Strat
There is the American Stratocaster it is made in the USA and is top quality and are very well built. They cost $1,000 and up. The Standard Stratocaster is now made in Mexico and are good guitars, yet they are not put together as well. They start around @ $500. They used to made in Japan and were almost as good as the regular American Strat. Finally, the Squire Stratocaster is the cheapest made with inferior materials made in Mexico. This is the one Justin was speaking of.
I've been playing guitar for 2 years, im into music such as the Red hot chilis and Stereophonics, and right now ive only got a fender squire strat. what do you suggest i buy??
ppl don't get a fender guitar that a crazy price if your gonna go for fender I don't know about pounds but dollars shit + fenders aren't that great go with a replica or somethin
if your willing to spend say around $1000 on a beginner guitar that your gonna make look like shit later on unless you take really good care(cause work and stuff may take that extra time away).
but if you do waste $1000 go ahead I'm not your money manager.(Fender's are probably made by mexicans)
trust me get the cheap electric guitar you see at the guitar store I recommend ESP,Ibanez,Gibson,Yamaha or just try out the guitars look at the space between the 12fret it should be close to the neck.
try everything put it through the amp, see if you like the sound fender's are gonna take the piss out of you as well, I've noticed that the frets are more spaced apart and with the replica from say ESP will have 22fret instead of 21frets all of Justin's Fenders have 22 but there hard to find, but if you do see one justin is your guitar idol, feel free to buy it don't take my opinion I would save $500+ and spend on somthin else
I just recommend a Ibanez ,ESP\LTD(kirk hammets uses these),Gibsons
Aria makes an excellent Strat knockoff that sells for $200. I got mine with a little Roland Cube amp, and some basic accessories for $375. [Canadian], including tax. I've had it 5 weeks. I'm an absolute beginner. I've learned a lot from Justin. I've toughen up my fingertips and can already play a couple of songs.
First of all, thanks for the advise! Any way at the moment I have a fender squire and I quit like it to play all the hard rock and metal stuff but I want to write songs and I have heared that its much more easy to write songs on acoustics so Im going to buy one. You said that cheap steel string acoustics are bad and I will take your word for it. So what would be the kind of lowest price you would pay for a steel string acoustic? Thanks again and please reply!
i just have to say i disagree with his advice on starting out on an electric because its easier to play...in my opinion it seems better to learn on an acoustic because it IS harder, and it will make the switch to electric that much easier and make you that much better of a player. its just my opinion, and its the way i did it...
I think it's important not to start with something which is going to be so hard to learn on that it might put a beginner off. Starting on an acoustic is fine if you can afford a decent model, if you are on a tight budget then i'd go electric.
Yamaha if you want acoustic, go with squier for electric, about 6 months ago I bought a squier telecaster and it plays just as well as my friends "real" telecaster from fender. The build quality is excellent compared to other lower end companies such as epiphone (bad electronics) and Vintage.
btw you can get a fender cd 140 (acoustic) for just over 100 pounds, of all the cheap acoustics it is my favourite, and its an actual Fender with a spruce top.
sorry but thats bullshit if u say e-guitar is good for beginners. i mean not everyone who wanna learn to play a guitar likes e-guitars and its sound. because it looks like u say that every beginner should begin with an e guitar because its so easy, and thats just wrong.. i started with classical guitar an i liked it from the beginning.
wow lol.. i cant imagine to play on an e-guitar without an amp.. i mean u can take a fork and a glass and make sound that way, i mean its cheap yes! ..of cource the age is very important here.. maybe for a child its easier to start with an e-guitar because hes a child and maybe its parents want him to learn the guitar.. but an adult should take what he wants to play on and what he likes.
they are easier to play but it cost alot more for a guitar with scalloped frets. and dont try to scallop them yourself because it is very difficult and you could ruin the neck
Probably not.. if you're friends with someone there that's your best bet. Otherwise, if you're very persistent, they may give you some discounted/free accessories with your guitar. This is my experience, anyway.
CurtainGuy, sorry but you dont know what you are talking about. It is possible to bargain at places like guitar center, especially if it is a display, which most are still brand new with not a scratch. Me and my friend recently bought a $1000 Schecter electric and we asked to lower the price since it was the display, we got it for $700, thats $300 for an amp. Best part is, the guitar came out of the box that morning, hardley a fingerprint on it!
Ammochakpram, electric guitars often do have more frets than acoustics (21 for electrics and 18 for acoustics) [someone correct me if I got that number wrong]. The actual number isn't the problem, though. What makes the difference is that it's more difficult to press down the higher frets on an acoustic because they are more difficult to access (look at Justin's acoustic). However, those frets are most often used during solos, which you probably won't have to worry about as a beginner.
Steel-strung acoustics usually have 18 to 21 frets, while electrics quite rarely have 21 frets (usually vintage fenders), usually most guitars have 22 or 24 frets. Classical guitars generally have 16 to 19 frets but only 12 are used most of the time, the other being inaccessible anyway.
Also acoustic guitars can have cutaway bodies to facilitate the access to the higher frets, but as you said... not important for a beginner. ;)
Hi, Justin this was very ineresting again, thank you.
When you cover guitar amplifiers sometime in the future, can you please tell us whether there is a differene between combos made for electric and steel-string acoustic guitars?
I am planning to buy a combo for my Cort Earth 70E NS.
hi there .......... i am thinking to begin learning guitar and i want to buy a cheap and good quality guitar , so which guitar do you think it will work with me the best ?? thanks..
it depends on what you want to learn with it for country, blues or light rock I'd say squire they are pretty affordable and good to learn on (I learned on one) If you are looking for heavyer blues to hard rock EPIPHONE's SG or Les Paul would be good but If you want to be a metal player a lot of the pickeup on the cheaper guitars are not really good enough however the starter pack from IBANEZ is and the ESP ec-50 is as well (I got one when I started Playing metal)
Just ordered a Pacifica (430 US$) and a Roland Micro Cube amplifier (150 US$). Quite excited^^, I've been playing on a classical guitar until now (for 2-3 years). Anyway thanks for getting me into playing guitar Justin;)

but not to forget, you'll have to buy a fairly decent amp (You don't want a cheap one. trust me)

that can be up to 550$

This hasn't really helped me. The problem is I've gotten a classical guitar yesterday for Xmas and I hate it. My parents want me to learn to play it and then I'd get an electric guitar. I wanted an electric guitar but now I've got the classical one so I'm not happy. Why can't parents just get the right stuff for their kids? :(
Synnergy08 2 years ago
Dude, I started out with an acoustic guitar with super crappy action. The distance between the 12th fret and the 6th string is ONE CENTIMETER. I learned on that. When I got a Fender Stratocaster, It was like butter.
Play the classical guitar. It's like a cage. When you're out of the cage, you'll be amazing.
ARVNpistola313 2 years ago 2
@Synnergy08
Can't you trade it in for an electric? Or perhaps be happy for the gift either way?

I can't now. :(
Thanks anyway

@Synnergy08
OK? :)
Alchemist9576L 2 years ago
Ok, thanks.
Synnergy08 2 years ago
You are welcome :)
Alchemist9576L 2 years ago
@Synnergy08 Your parents did the right thing. Classical guitar is thicker, more difficult but overall clearer! When you first start it is important that you first learn chords, scales etc. Classical guitar is the clearest and best way to do that. When I started (about 9 years ago) I got a classical guitar which my father build. When I was able to play enough chords and got used to it, I got a 'real' classical. After that I bought a cheap electric. Now I own about 7 great electric guitars

My first guitar was an Epiphone Les Paul. They sold it to me for $500. 7 months later i am now playing a Fender Stratocaster.
ZeppelinFloydRoses 2 years ago
my first was an Abeline acoustic which is a subordinate for Samick music corps. and then a Silvertone REvolver(the indonesian made) not the vintage... i wish..
baddmaddogg 2 years ago
What are the pros and cons of each one in your opinion?
CleverDjembe 2 years ago
Well. The Les Paul was pretty cool. Sounded ok, felt like shit though. really heavy, fret board was not that good, the neck was pretty fat and just didn't feel that good.
the strat was much better. it's light, it stays in tune, the fret board is beautiful, the frets are bigger.
for a beginner i would get a squier or a fender strat. just like the one justin has in this video ^

can u recommend any name of the nice decent classical guitar(flamenco) under US$300-$500...?
not the the beginner one,,, for intermediate and student

So you don't strum a nylon string guitar...
Someone will have to inform Willie Nelson of that fact.
Hoopermazing 2 years ago
u can he just means you embelish alot of playing on a classical . willie uses his for country which is what made his sound famouse.. but most classical guitar plaers dont just strum they strum yes but finger pick alot of the notes. more then just strum.. he just got talkin to fast and skipped over without goin into detaill.

DO NOT PAY 300 Quid for a Squire Strat
solusmysterion 2 years ago
There is the American Stratocaster it is made in the USA and is top quality and are very well built. They cost $1,000 and up. The Standard Stratocaster is now made in Mexico and are good guitars, yet they are not put together as well. They start around @ $500. They used to made in Japan and were almost as good as the regular American Strat. Finally, the Squire Stratocaster is the cheapest made with inferior materials made in Mexico. This is the one Justin was speaking of.

I've been playing guitar for 2 years, im into music such as the Red hot chilis and Stereophonics, and right now ive only got a fender squire strat. what do you suggest i buy??
crazycrl94 2 years ago
Depends on your price range. I'd shoot for an American Strat.
tmac674 2 years ago
im willing to spend £300. A strat? maybe
crazycrl94 2 years ago
well Im in America so I don't know how much that is. Strats here that are good are about 600$+
tmac674 2 years ago
A "good" Strat is about $1100.00.
(that's the average cost of an American made standard Strat)

ppl don't get a fender guitar that a crazy price if your gonna go for fender I don't know about pounds but dollars shit + fenders aren't that great go with a replica or somethin
nonexistence21 2 years ago
Fender isn't that great? If you have the money to actually buy one, which I doubt many have, why would not buy it?
Paddis92 2 years ago
if your willing to spend say around $1000 on a beginner guitar that your gonna make look like shit later on unless you take really good care(cause work and stuff may take that extra time away).
but if you do waste $1000 go ahead I'm not your money manager.(Fender's are probably made by mexicans)
trust me get the cheap electric guitar you see at the guitar store I recommend ESP,Ibanez,Gibson,Yamaha or just try out the guitars look at the space between the 12fret it should be close to the neck.
nonexistence21 2 years ago
try everything put it through the amp, see if you like the sound fender's are gonna take the piss out of you as well, I've noticed that the frets are more spaced apart and with the replica from say ESP will have 22fret instead of 21frets all of Justin's Fenders have 22 but there hard to find, but if you do see one justin is your guitar idol, feel free to buy it don't take my opinion I would save $500+ and spend on somthin else

Thanks Justin
writeDVD 2 years ago
First of all, thanks for the advise! Any way at the moment I have a fender squire and I quit like it to play all the hard rock and metal stuff but I want to write songs and I have heared that its much more easy to write songs on acoustics so Im going to buy one. You said that cheap steel string acoustics are bad and I will take your word for it. So what would be the kind of lowest price you would pay for a steel string acoustic? Thanks again and please reply!
ConVallely 2 years ago
i just have to say i disagree with his advice on starting out on an electric because its easier to play...in my opinion it seems better to learn on an acoustic because it IS harder, and it will make the switch to electric that much easier and make you that much better of a player. its just my opinion, and its the way i did it...
adammaes7777 2 years ago
I think it's important not to start with something which is going to be so hard to learn on that it might put a beginner off. Starting on an acoustic is fine if you can afford a decent model, if you are on a tight budget then i'd go electric.
raithrover1976 2 years ago
hi man ...
iwnat to ask you which guitar is better , yamaha or squiere ?
FaRaMetallica 2 years ago
he thinks Yamaha is better...
baksteen123 2 years ago

Depalla 2 years ago
the point was that it's physically easier and cheaper to start with an electric. the "sound" isn't even a factor since you're not using the amp.
rm0659 2 years ago
wow lol.. i cant imagine to play on an e-guitar without an amp.. i mean u can take a fork and a glass and make sound that way, i mean its cheap yes! ..of cource the age is very important here.. maybe for a child its easier to start with an e-guitar because hes a child and maybe its parents want him to learn the guitar.. but an adult should take what he wants to play on and what he likes.
Depalla 2 years ago
well, as an adult whose practice time is the middle of the night you don't always want to be using your amp. it's a survival thing. :)

yes of course but i wasnt talking abour that ..

Justin you are an amazing guitarist, I just was wondering about the scalloped frets, what do you think of them and are they really easier to play.
standindarkness 2 years ago
they are easier to play but it cost alot more for a guitar with scalloped frets. and dont try to scallop them yourself because it is very difficult and you could ruin the neck

i live in the los angeles. is it possible to bargain for guitars at places like SamAsk or Guitar Center. if u what are your tips for bargaining?
VuTang01 2 years ago
Probably not.. if you're friends with someone there that's your best bet. Otherwise, if you're very persistent, they may give you some discounted/free accessories with your guitar. This is my experience, anyway.
CurtainGuy 2 years ago
CurtainGuy, sorry but you dont know what you are talking about. It is possible to bargain at places like guitar center, especially if it is a display, which most are still brand new with not a scratch. Me and my friend recently bought a $1000 Schecter electric and we asked to lower the price since it was the display, we got it for $700, thats $300 for an amp. Best part is, the guitar came out of the box that morning, hardley a fingerprint on it!
chort1234 2 years ago
Well, yes that's true display products you usually can get discounted.

does electric guitar has more fret than acqoustic guitar,,,???
if so then... will it make a big difference if i go for acqoustic,,,
cause of their less fret...???
ammochakpram 2 years ago
Ammochakpram, electric guitars often do have more frets than acoustics (21 for electrics and 18 for acoustics) [someone correct me if I got that number wrong]. The actual number isn't the problem, though. What makes the difference is that it's more difficult to press down the higher frets on an acoustic because they are more difficult to access (look at Justin's acoustic). However, those frets are most often used during solos, which you probably won't have to worry about as a beginner.
StarGazer2188 2 years ago
most electric guitars are 22 frets i have two that are 24 frets
MRWHITE3535 2 years ago
Steel-strung acoustics usually have 18 to 21 frets, while electrics quite rarely have 21 frets (usually vintage fenders), usually most guitars have 22 or 24 frets. Classical guitars generally have 16 to 19 frets but only 12 are used most of the time, the other being inaccessible anyway.
Also acoustic guitars can have cutaway bodies to facilitate the access to the higher frets, but as you said... not important for a beginner. ;)
SteelSkin667 2 years ago
fender standard strats (mexican) usually have 21 frets too.

Just rob a bank and then buy a$30,000 PRS for starters - then you know if you can't play its your fault not the guitar's!
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
it depends on what you want to learn with it for country, blues or light rock I'd say squire they are pretty affordable and good to learn on (I learned on one) If you are looking for heavyer blues to hard rock EPIPHONE's SG or Les Paul would be good but If you want to be a metal player a lot of the pickeup on the cheaper guitars are not really good enough however the starter pack from IBANEZ is and the ESP ec-50 is as well (I got one when I started Playing metal)
