@mhsmith33 I found it in the attic. I'd recommend checking out toy stores or maybe even dollar stores, it seems like pretty cheap quality. A nerf ball can be used if you can't find anything else, but they are denser and heavier.
Go to ventriloquist central dot com and look me up I am president of the Florida ventriloquist association as well. feel free to look me up on face book and get my email as well.
Very interesting because that is NOT how it's done by the professional soft figure builders, I should know, but that's okay it's your own style and in the end you have a usable figure. If you want to try the "professional" way try using half inch foam and contact cement to construct your puppet's head. Try to find “Making Sculpted Puppets with Verna Finley” from Star Media Ministries
@MeanJohnDean No, it definitely is not how they do it. But for someone who has never done it before, this is probably an easier way.
The professional way makes puppets that weigh less, have more malleable heads/faces (and therefore a much greater range of facial expression) and look better if seen from all sides.
However, this was never intended to be a screen/stage used muppet; this is a ventriloquism dummy made out of foam. A rigid face isn't as big of a deal.
@MMBastheking I got them in my parents' attic, but they are just cheap toys. I imagine any Target, Wal-Mart or Toys R Us would have something that works. And it doesn't have to be that soft of a ball, I've used much denser foam. It works fine, it's just heavier in the end.
@JMB4MUSIC "Microsoft" is not a program. Microsoft Word? Windows Movie Maker?
This IS a guide to how to make these puppets. Just watch the video, it shows pretty much all I know about puppet making, and I just made it up as I went.
@eddfredandkyle I needed a puppet for ventriloquism, so I figured out how to make one. After I made this one, I actually took a puppetry class, but that taught me more about marionettes than big-mouth puppets.
@eddfredandkyle It wasn't a ventriloquism class, just a puppetry class. It was a theater class at my school (BYU) that taught about marionettes, big mouth puppets, and parade puppets. It didn't teach me anything about ventriloquism, I picked that all up on my own.
