  • I bet the ambulance driver was very surprised. This also proves the trains operator was keeping an eye out and did not have tunnel vision. Bravo!

  • maybe eventually they will. right now they are testing ptc and a computerized system that incorporates the standard wabco braking system in colorado. i hear that it will stop a freight train at 45 mph in 1100 feet. it has something to do with all the freight cars and the locomotive braking simultaneously instead of 1 car at a time and it only cost 20K$ per car. but the catch is all the "links in the chain" have to be equipped with the computer for it to work i still would like to see it.

  • It would have been faster to just let the train go through.

  • I live here, that station is disgusting.

  • @wowimsupercheeseboy6 me too, and yes i agree, lots of weird people also lol

  • I'd like to see a freight train pulling 120 loaded coal hoppers pull that one off.

  • everyone should stop i think the train driver know the law

  • @addan495 it's almost impossible to stop a freight train on short notice.... too much momentum

  • god i wish PA drivers respected emergency vehicles as much as this train does.

  • @XxrotorayxX If you think people don't respect EVs in PA, try running with blue lights and no siren. people practically ignore you (also in PA)!

  • @RyGuy5320 i know what you're sayin', I've done it before.

  • love how the ambulance says thank you with the air horn.

  • @Sneak693 and then the train said your welcome :)

  • Man Bites Dog

  • Dog Bites Man

  • clever

  • How interesting!

    Also seeing a crossing keeper!

Had the train continued and stopped at the station, would cars be blocking the crossing?

    Smart move.

  • I've operated an Ambulance in Norristown and during a response got the head nod from the engineer to go through the crossing just prior to the train crossing Main st. to enter the at Main and Markley sts

  • Lol engineer win?

  • @XxTournaquetxX Yes!!

  • I been there before

  • Okay, the gate didn't go down? Why ?

  • Actually, the paint is wrong for VMSC. that is a Harleysville ambulance, the old white-over-red scheme. And it appears to be large block letters in an arc over the logo (the S-o-L if I remember correctly), which also fits Harleysville's old scheme. That ambulance is either the 1998 Ford/McCoy-Miller, or the 2000Ford/Horton.

  • That is the Lansdale, PA train station in the 80's at some point, judging by the ambulance from the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale, PA crossed the tracks enroute to what was then North Penn Hospital in Hatfield Township. Trains would always stop for an ambulance in Lansdale mainly because there was a signal tower there and they would advice the incoming trains of such so the train can slow and stop in time for that particular crossing.

  • Haha i know where that is :)

  • That was nice of them.. Never know who's in the back, or what their problem is.

  • Hmm... But I think, that stopping the train before the crossing takes more time, than if they let it pass and free the crossing at full speed. Especially if it's so short train. Also long trains can make troubles, when stopped like this. What could the ambulance driver do, if the train had stopped with e.g. second engine over the crossing... Refilling the brake cirquits tooks lots of valuable time.

So my opinion is to don't stop the train.

  • @BastardVW Dude lol the train station is pretty much right next to the crossing...so then the train would let off passengers while part of it was still in the crossing way

  • that's dangerous

in the netherlands is that not allowed

maybe a train will come from the other way

  • LOL, are you thinking at all?

that's why we have watchbox operators!

  • Heh yeah, but in the Netherlands we dont got trains that long as in the USA :)

  • how come some trains in the states are fitted with wig-wag lights?

  • damn near all that i have seen have them

  • Are you talking about the flashing ditch lights? I think those are for drawing a bit more attention when one unit is moving about.

  • Guess this is proof that no matter what, railroading needs the human element; computers can't replace everything.

  • that goes with just about every industry

  • that was really kind, of septa to do that, although i dont know what would have been the right way, but still

  • didnt relieze that a train will stop for an Ambulance. thats something new! I'll have to add that procedure to my train layout!

  • Most trains can't, even if they wanted to. This one was just lucky enough to already be slowing down for the station, and had the operator tell them in enough time. The majority of the time, there's no way, especially freight trains.

  • I understand ya with freight trains....they wouldnt have the time if something like that happend, an emergency vehicle would have to take an alternate route or get over those tracks before the train approachs...

  • cool

  • the train can do that..... yeild to Med Truck?

  • that was very nice of him to stop for the ambulance

  • Woah, I thought trains too k a lot longer to stop. Unless it started to slow down at like..5 miles back.

  • that was a short train, it can stop fast.

  • The locomotive is a carriage. It's called an EMU, or Electric multiple unit. The contols are at the ends of the cars, and the motors are on each car. I remember that they hardly made any noise either. Also known as self-propelled cars too

  • Ugly locomotive! And the train is too short! If you come to China you'll see a lot of trains which are really long and they have a locomotive which is beautiful. This locomotive looks like a carrige!

  • AS techno79 pointed out, this is an EMU, similar to vehicles used on many urban railways throughout the world (including China, I'm sure). These vehicles can usually stop and start out again much quicker than a locomotive-hauled trained, which has comparatively very poor acceleration and braking.

As short as the train was, however, it probably wouldn't have delayed the ambulance all that much if it had been allowed to go through the intersection without stopping.

  • You know what, in China the trains are really long. The passenger trains are usually 18 through 22 carriges, excluding the locomotive, mail carrige, luggage carrige and power carrige. And the freight trains could be even over 50 carriges long! And I never see trains like this in the area supervised by Chengdu Railroad Bureau. Which supervises all railroads in Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province and Chongqing. By the way, the trains in China are mostly used for long-term or mid-term transportation

  • In America, the freight trains can be 100+ carraiges long.

  • Same as the longest train in China. (I heard this from the others, I didn't see that train)

  • I miss seeing that tower. When it came down, it marked the end of an era.

  • that was really generous of him on letting the ambulance cross the tracks!! :) i would do the same thing. most of them, however dont stop for an emergency vehicle to cross the tracks. how rude!

  • Well they still have to yield. Freight trains have to run 1/8 miles to come to a complete stop from traveling 50 MPH. Most of the time they can't stop in time.

  • Most of the horns on the shorliner commuters owned by Septa sound the same as the ones as Metro North M2s,M4s,M6s,and the shorliner cars.

  • HI,Im happy to find thi video,i lived in this town for almost 4 months, i went there for exchange programm work for university students .. i miss it. I lived in Main Streets apartemts with friends from Argentina, Chile and Peru...

We used to walk every day all the Main Street :)

    I miss the trein service

  • god i'm always driving on main street when that train comes and the stoplights there SUCK.

  • what a quick stop

  • I'm not sure exactly which crossing this is, or which direction the camera is facing, but there are 2 crossings within 150 yards of each other, since the tracks cross the roads diagonally near the intersecion in the middle of town. There are several stops over a short distance in this area, and the commuter lines mingle with the freight lines too. Therefore the trains never get over 25-30mph in this area, and with only 4 cars to a train, it's realatively easy to stop.

  • coolman ill rate awesome for this

  • respect

  • cool

  • Interesting. I never thought about such a thing. LOL

  • me either.

  • cool
